As Public Health crumbles and too few people are getting vaccinated for measles our herd immunity levels have dropped too much and now many people are at risk for a disease we almost eradicated in Canada. #measles#measlesisairborne#Canada 🧵 1/
"Essentially, when you're infected with #measles, your immune system abruptly forgets every pathogen it's ever encountered before"
"'Measles parties' are a really, really bad idea.
Do not expose your child to measles.
Get your child vaccinated. The MMR vaccine is safe and effective."
FYI, you can still get infected with #measles if you have had the #MMR vaccine. It does not prevent infection itself. What it prevents is the disease form of measles, which -- with vaccination -- the immune system keeps in check
What we don't know is how #covid and our friend #SARSCoV2 -- a virus that impacts the immune system's ability to keep infections in check -- will end up impacting this
It would be wise, then, to prevent measles infection entirely by filtering it out of the air
Hey 🇨🇦
Make sure your #measles vaccines are up to date if you're travelling to 🇺🇸 for March Break.
Florida is 'lettin' it rip'
Measles is so contagious that if one person has it, up to 90% of the people close to that person who are not immune will also become infected. The virus can live for up to two hours in an airspace where the infected person coughed or sneezed.
"People had the privilege of never seeing these diseases thanks to vaccines and then told themselves they didn’t need vaccines because they had never seen these diseases. Great job guys!"
The CDC released 70K+ more doses of the #RSV vaccines for babies. Get those shots! 💉
The anti-vaccine movement is starting to show in measles cases. Increase of 18% in cases and 43% increase in deaths worldwide from 2021 to 2022. Most of the #measles deaths are in young kids. 😔
Media should ask public health how measles virus transmits
With all the attention on #measles#outbreaks recently, the media should ask public health how the measles #virus can catch a ride in #aerosols to help it stay #airborne for hours and infect people but somehow no other virus like #COVID or #respiratory viruses (#Flu, #RSV) can use the exact same transportation method and fall to the ground. 🤔🧵 1/
You don't need to be a scientist or public health expert to know that this is absolutely bonkers.
Children with measles, an incredibly infectious disease, should not be going to school or wandering around making those who cannot vaccinate sick. They can permanently disable someone.
"Measles outbreaks in Florida and Philadelphia have come as parents defied advice to quarantine their children and at least one high-profile state official sowed confusion about how long to keep unvaccinated children out of school.
Both the outbreaks in Broward county, Florida, and Philadelphia made news after children brought the disease into the wider community."
Imagine what these kids that are contracting measles in Florida are going to think when they figure out their parents could have stopped them from getting it in the first place and that the state not only didn't step up, but stepped back and said- whatever.
"The health unit isn't revealing details about the infected person except to say they was [sic] immunized and had not travelled recently or been in contact with a known case of measles."
