I know a horrifyingly vast number of people in education circles who are all-in, gung-ho about AI.

How do you teach environmental studies while you are supporting catastrophic waste of water & active global warming?

How do you teach kids that plagiarism is wrong when you are promoting plagiarism?

How do you teach kids that consent is important when you are promoting the wholesale non-consensual unpaid theft of original creators works?

Question for security-minded people:

How are you handling video calls in light of Win 11 Recall / Copilot?

I do not consent to other people randomly recording me. How on earth do I vet everyone's operating systems for work calls?

Right now I am angry & thus not framing the question elegantly. For the love of all that's holy, do not lecture me about asking the wrong question or in the wrong way.

If you have mandatory work video calls, how are you handling this yourself?

Related thought: I guess now Signal app and any other encrypted message systems are no longer functionally secure if the person I am communicating with happens to be running Signal on desktop with Windows 11 / Recall / Copilot.

DAMMIT.

The best workaround I can think of is to switch from text to voice notes as much as possible.

I cannot articulate how much I hate this.

@thepoliticalcat These are mandatory work video meetings, often with external parties, which I do not organize and cannot opt out of.

I've been spending a lot of time lately talking to a 20-something friend whose lungs and heart were badly messed up by covid, on top of an existing complicated medical situation. If he gets covid again, he's dead. He doesn't currently expect to live to 30 (which is a fair assessment).

Today he informed me that my isolation life terrifies him & stresses him out. So he's cutting off contact for his mental health.

I was worried that I wouldn't be able to handle the bleakness of his situation, and I was scared I would inadvertently hurt him. I didn't see this twist coming.

I care about him and his welfare. I support his boundaries. I appreciate that he explained all of this and didn't just ghost. I will also miss him a lot.

Those of us who are trying to avoid covid are often abandoned and avoided by others.

The most isolating part of the pandemic for me has never been being locked alone in the house without human touch. It's that my survival choices make other people uncomfortable, and almost everyone I know in some way places their need for emotional comfort over any thought of supporting me or helping me survive in this era.

Not mad at my friend, who is in hell, but deeply disappointed in many others.

I'm also not saying "poor me" -- this isn't just about me. And it isn't even just about the pandemic.

Many people (not everyone) avoid tragedy and hardship like it's contagious. (Yes, there are studies on this.) Ask your friends who have chronic illnesses, or have received a terminal diagnosis, or have divorced, gone bankrupt, or been bereaved.

Please step up for the other people in your life, even if it's not "comfortable" or "fun". I don't know how we all survive otherwise.

One of the great ironies of this social dynamic is that among people I know, it is the ones with the least, the ones who are the most vulnerable and precarious, the ones who are absolutely living in hell who do the most for other people.

Please don't wait to go through hell yourself before you are good to others.

A friend of mine with small children is trying to get out of an abusive relationship.

I would like to point her at good resources about digital security in her situation.

If anyone has expertise in this field who can give me solid recommendations, I would appreciate it very much.

*Yes, I'm aware of Widows 11 / Recall.

*I do not need uninformed opinions or speculation from anyone and especially not from men. Thank you for your reading comprehension.

If you are an informed, intelligent, compassionate, in-any-way-science-literate person, how are you coping with living through these times? What's helping?

No snark, please. I'm interested in sincere, practical answers.

@Pagan_Animist I read this and exhaled a breath it feels like I've been holding since the dawn of time.

Thank you. xo

@thepoliticalcat Okay, now for the useful reply:

The Internet feels like a miracle in this time. I think, often, about how if this was 1918 I'd be having these conversations by airmail letter.

My media diet is really intentionally filtered: I can't take upsetting movies, either.

When you ask a stranger to explain something to you or to educate you, you are asking for their time, attention and expertise. On social media, you're probably not offering to pay for these resources.

  • Respect other people
  • Look it up before you ask.
  • Look for an answer in the comments before you ask.
  • Are you asking for an explanation of a joke? Don't.
  • If you must ask, phrase your question as a request, not a demand.
  • Recognize that not all posts are for you. You can move on, it's okay.

Every once in a while it occurs to me that people post such wonderfully random things on the Fediverse that any one of you could be functionally running a numbers station or beaming out activation codes and we'd never guess.

I was just in a work meeting for a distributed team & everyone is (rightly) concerned about how many collaborative tools that the team relies on to work together across distance are now scraping the team's proprietary data & stuffing it into AI training sets.

I would love recommendations for collaborative tools (doc editing, email, video calls, anything/everything) that A) you use and like, & that B) has strong (reliable) position on user data privacy. (Edit: Self-hosting is not an option.)

ShaulaEvans,
@ShaulaEvans@zirk.us avatar

Related: I would love to nudge this team into not running the organizational email through Gmail.

Again, if anyone can make a recommendation of a business email option for a low tech team with a strong technical administrator, let me know. (Self-hosting is not an option at this time.)

ShaulaEvans,
@ShaulaEvans@zirk.us avatar

I'm seeing lots of recs for ProtonMail. I'm a fan of ProtonMail personally. Has anyone ever used it for an organization, and is it set up for branded business email? I've never dealt with that.

Given how much info this team keeps in their email, my big concern would be people getting locked out of accounts and losing institutional knowledge.

(Low tech, underpaid, overworked team: no, they are not going to change their work styles for the sake of a new email system.)

ShaulaEvans,
@ShaulaEvans@zirk.us avatar

Also related: Can anyone recommend a good, reliable password manager a remote team could use for shared logins?

(I have had bad experiences with password managers that other people chose in the past. I'm not a fan. But it's a solution that might solve a problem in this particular situation.)

Life Skills We Don't Teach People That We Need Right Now:

The ability to sit with someone else in suffering or hardship in solidarity, without erasing, minimizing, or smearing Toxic Positivity all over their pain; also, without centering ourselves.

Are there societies, culture or subcultures that are good at this?
