gemelliz,

"Essentially, when you're infected with , your immune system abruptly forgets every pathogen it's ever encountered before"

"'Measles parties' are a really, really bad idea.
Do not expose your child to measles.
Get your child vaccinated. The MMR vaccine is safe and effective."

@gemelliz @BuDS @Wraithe I can’t believe children will die like 18th century peasants becaude their idiot parents reject modern medicine.

@LALegault @gemelliz @BuDS The things that’s wild to me is that the awareness of the “amnesia” thing is relatively recent.

It’s wild how the anti-vax stuff progressed from marginally reasonable “it’s a new vaccine and I don’t trust it” - sure, it’s also a new DISEASE and we have NO idea what it’ll do to you, so…juggle that one, I guess1️⃣

Now it’s moved to vaccines that are actually preventative (the Covid one isn’t f’rex) and prevent deeply terrible shit

@LALegault @gemelliz @BuDS 1️⃣ oh, but you also won’t wear a mask cos “masky hurt facey” well fuck you then.

@gemelliz @BuDS
My son was born in 2002, the height of the MMR vaccine controversy. I discussed it with my mum who was adamant I should have my baby vaccinated as I very nearly died from measles as a baby.
I did and he's a very healthy young man today.
That so-called doctor has a lot to answer for. I'm sure many parents didn't because of his scaremongering.

@gemelliz @BuDS Mom's hearing was damaged by red measles in her teens.

gemelliz,

"The UK has declared a national health incident following a surge in measles. The virus is spreading London where up to 20% of children are entering school unvaccinated."

"Think #measles is just a simple rash? Wrong. It can lead to pneumonia, meningitis, seizures, death."

LauraMae,

@gemelliz @BuDS Thank you for sharing this. I am one of those unfortunate few who doesn’t have immunity to measles. I would have to quarantine, if I caught measles. I had my childhood vaccinations, but my employers at different hospitals found I had no antibodies in my blood. I have had three boosters and still no immunity. I hope if I was exposed that I just would not catch measles, but I don’t think that is how the disease cycle works, so I try to avoid exposure.

@LauraMae @gemelliz @BuDS Measles was one disease I managed to miss as a child. But I wasn't sure if I'd been vaccinated for it as a teen, and those records are long gone. So, I went to my doctor, got a test and found that I have antibodies. So... for anyone else who is uncertain of their status, you can get a blood test to find out -- then you know if you can hang out with Ms Laura or not. :)

LyleDAL,

@AskPippa @LauraMae @gemelliz @BuDS Here in the US, if you are insured (yeah, yeah. I know.) you can get the vaccination without any out of pocket. If you aren't sure if you ever got vaccinated, it is OK to go and get the shot.

Wraithe,
@Wraithe@mastodon.social avatar

@LauraMae @gemelliz @BuDS There was a really great thread over on BlueSky which discussed that the average persons immunity to measles from the shot can/will decline over time and that, if your health plan covers, it’s probably worthwhile to have the test to check your immunity done if it’s been (like me) more than few decades since the shots.

I would post the thread, if I could find it, but BlueSkys search suuuuuuuuuuuucks. 😂

@gemelliz @BuDS Good grief. This was a won battle. Then came the McCarthy plague queen and her sham doctor, inspiring fear into parents.

gemelliz,

@CStamp @BuDS its truly mind boggling.

Today from Canadian physician Dr. Raghu Venugopal :
"Measles hopefully won't occur in #Canada but we're at risk. Most have not seen children die from sequelae, but I have.
In [#Alberta] the #Calgary measles vaccine rates are 78-86%. That's led the UK into outbreaks.
👉 We need 95% coverage."
