Home in Vermont as of midafternoon, after 6 days on the road including very fun family sojourns through Gros Morne and PEI.

I had imagined that driving back would feel less confusing for my brain and body than flying does.

It did not.

@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@tantramar @jordinn @hannu_ikonen That's kind of brilliant, but should mention more than the Hopewell Rocks. :)

I lived in Chatham for a couple of years as a kid, make day trips in the summer from NS, but travelling from Toronto to Amherst in the summer, NB, like Que, is something to drive through. I used to laugh when passing that huge billboard for "Potato World." A decade later, I finally became interested. Best fries? Would like to try that. But fellow still won't stop. One year... 🙂

@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@tantramar @jordinn @hannu_ikonen I will say that the trans Canada in NB is my favourite highway. Since it's been finished, stops at Fredericton were no longer convenient, and I kind of miss that highway through nowhere, though I think the province is at least an hour faster. Also, crossing from Que, Edmunston is where to fill up and I loved stopping at La Presse Cafe, which I am devastated to learn, after checking its spelling, is permanently closed.

@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@tantramar The highway between Grand Falls and Chatham. You filled up with gas before entering, there used to be a gas station in the middle, and nothing else, except logging that you weren't supposed to notice. It was getting really bumpy, but the highway to Fredericton used to be painfully slow.

Once they finished the trans Canada, that became faster, so that's what we used, but a few years back we tried the old way for old times. The road was fixed, but no gas station, still slower.

@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@tantramar We've been driving between here and there long enough to see the building of the faster and better Trans Canada. An 18-hr drive is now 16 or less. There is still a slow part of Quebec up about Riviere-du-Loup, tuning towards NB that is 2-lane, 80 km/hr zone, in which traffic bunches up because there is always a slow vehicle and the twisty road doesn't allow enough passing opportunities. :)

Bird flu virus found in grocery milk as officials say supply still safe (Gift Link, thanks @firefly !) https://wapo.st/3JxBHpf #birdflu #h5n1 #hpai #cows #milk

@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@tiamat271 @ai6yr @firefly "fragments of the bird flu virus had been detected in some samples of pasteurized milk "

Frangments, not the whole virus. So pasteurization seems to be doing its job.

Folk drinking raw milk should rethink things.

Today is an important anniversary.

73 years ago, on April 23, 1951, in Farmville, VA, Barbara Johns led a walkout of her segregated high school to protest the unfair and deplorable conditions of her school.

What?! You don’t know who Barbara Johns was?

She led her walkout more than 4 years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus, and before MLK, Jr. embraced nonviolence as the way to equality.

Tomorrow Trump's $175M bond may be ruled null and void.

Just a quick reminder that Trump is facing two tough court reckonings tomorrow. Everyone will be following the opening statements in his NY election fraud trial, but nearby his lawyers will be meeting with NY prosecutors and Judge Engoron to rule on the validity of his 'fishy' $175M bond for his business fraud conviction. If the bond is deemed invalid, asset seizure to cover the $450M+ judgement may commence.

Pecker could be key witness - in ways more devastating than Michael Cohen.

@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@kristen_d @GottaLaff Regardless of leaks, I wish media would shut up about jurors and witnesses. With jurors, every time they talk about "who they are," they are risking that people who know them will figure out who they are & leak that, intentionally or not, and witnesses before their testimony is just asking for threats against their lives, affecting their testimony.

I like MacIntosh, Cortland, maybe Granny Smith apples. Hard to find at this time of year. I was craving apples, so fellow picked up some Cosmic Crisps. Not a fan. Crispy, but too sweet. A bit better than Red Delicious, which I really don't like, but, good to try, not again.

@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm I've never had a Gala. How are they on the sweet/tart scale? (At least I don't think I've had one.)

@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@BruceMirken @Pineywoozle @gedeonm Oh, I love those, too, but it has been so long since I've seen one that I had forgotten about them.

@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@BruceMirken @Pineywoozle @gedeonm Guessing, but big chains want produce that holds up in wider transportation, has longevity. If they bruise easily or have a shorter shelf life, they seem harder to find. Also, there may be a bigger market for sweet apples over tart.

Cortlands don't last as long as Macs. From my Cosmic Crisp experience, they are probably more resident to bruising, may last longer than Macs, and I recall Gravenstein being similar. But texture and flavour, just not for me.
