In 1943, U.S. forces in Britain expected to export racial segregation. When white American Military Police (MPs) insisted a local pub segregate, the owner said he would. When MPs returned next day, they were met with “Blacks Only” signs & British barmaids telling white soldiers to wait their turn when they thiught they would be served before black soldiers. This set the stage for the epic Battle of Bamber Bridge.

Apparently, the has just launched "Woke Watch", where red faced pillocks send in angry e-mails, complaining about transgender asylum seekers giving their house prices pronoun cancer, or something.

Anyway, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should one e-mail wokewatch@dailymail.co.uk to , or just plain take the piss. No, that would be WRONG. Oh, for shame!

On 9th May 1386 the Treaty of Windsor was signed between Portugal and England, uniting the two countries in a perpetual alliance.

It remains the oldest remaining alliance in the world.

In WW2 it would TWICE play a quiet but critical part in the allies' victory over the Axis, to the watching disbelief of Roosevelt and the Americans.

Here's how the treaty came about, was lost, almost got cancelled, then helped Britain in its darkest hour. /1 🧵

The UK was a wealthy country. Then conservatives imposed austerity to "save money."

Now the UK is largely a poor country. Outside London it is poorer than Mississippi. NHS being killed off. Schools, infrastructure, etc.

But the rich are doing very, very well indeed.

So it appears the entire UK electoral roll has been hacked. That’s over 40million records of people’s name and addresses, and possibly email as well. They didn’t tell us for nine months either! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-66441010

Folks in the #UK, my old colleague Dr. Adrian Bowyer is running a petition:

"New rules for manufacturers of medical device implants

We believe it should be made illegal for manufacturers of medical devices implanted into patients to regularly charge the patient for upgrades or maintenance."

It also calls for "IP" to be released if a manufacturer fails. I feel this subject is important enough to ask you to disseminate the link. Thank you.

“According to a recent poll, more than 70 percent of Britons under the age of 50 are indifferent to the coronation. Even so, a staggering 250 million pounds ($315m) of magicked-up taxpayer money will be spent on this single day even as thousands of nurses, doctors, teachers and other key public workers have been told for months there is no money in the coffers to offer them a meaningful pay rise.”

Here is the first of a few pictures of the Great Spotted Woodpecker that landed about 10 meters from where I was sat. What a bird, has made my week. This year I set a goal of photographing all 3 of the UK's woodpecker species. I now have 2 with just the rare lesser spotted to find.

I hope you like this pic, I'm not likely to ever get this sort of shot again.

THE ANGER I FEEL....

Khrystyna and Svitlana were singing in the street in Zaporizhzhia an hour before a Russian missile strike on the city, and this video of them was filmed.

One of them died yesterday at the site of the strike. She was 19 years old. The other girl died in the ICU today. She was 21.

Deepest condolences to their families.

Russia must pay.

British people, I cannot explain adequately what absolute hell the American healthcare system is. You know how people say: "at least in the US, you can get fast treatment. At least in the US, you can choose your doctor. At least in the US, you can get the most innovative treatment"?

Lies. All of it.

The US healthcare system excels at one thing only, and that's bankrupting people.

Knowing US MAGA Republicans, Donald Trump, and House Speaker Mike Johnson have procedurally blocked all US military aid to Ukraine, Putin is depleting Ukrainian Air defenses by overwhelming it with missiles; 110+ Russian rockets last night alone across Ukraine!

Putin and the Republicans will leave the Ukrainians defenseless against the Russian barbaric onslaught!

so, to the and communities on Fedi.

I ordered a device called a BT Speak about a week ago. It is a PDA-like device, with an 8-dot Perkins style Braille keyboard and speech output for the visually impaired.

When I got the device, it did not boot, and I contacted the company about it.

I was able to get the device working again by myself rather quickly, however here in lies the reason for my post.

The company were so quick to respond that a replacement unit is already on the way.

After some discussion, what has been decided is that I will be donating the replacement device, brand new, to a visually impaired child who may not be able to procure assistive technology via other means.

The reason for the group is finding ways to work together and advocate for !

The U.K. Government Is Very Close To Eroding Encryption Worldwide

"The U.K. Parliament is pushing ahead with a sprawling internet regulation bill that will, among other things, undermine the privacy of people around the world. The Online Safety Bill, now at the final stage before passage in the House of Lords, gives the British government the ability to force backdoors into messaging services, which will destroy end-to-end encryption. No amendments have been accepted that would mitigate the bill’s most dangerous elements. "

georgepenney, to Cat

So we woke late last night to the sound of Madame Harriet, one of our overlords here at our current housesit, making kind of noise that any cat person will immediately recognise as "I am walking through the house with a present for you. Get ready for entrails. Yay entrails!"

We promptly turned on the light to see her sitting on the end of our bed with one of my socks in her mouth. She was proudly declaring she'd killed it for us.
The sock looked decidedly dead. If it could have entrails, they would have been on show. She obviously understood how to murder a sock with both skill and panache.

We thanked her for her services to the Society for Making Sure There Is Only Ever One Sock In Any Pair Left After A Week and went back to sleep.

Some time later, I woke to the feeling of something running up my leg. It was small, scratchy and definitely not my imagination.

On reflex, I whipped off the duvet and froze when I saw a very alive mouse hunched down against my knee.

Swearing, meowing, bellowing and roaring ensued but I can safely report that mouse, humans and cat are all still living, with mouse relocated to garden. No sign of entrails at all.

Meanwhile Madame Harriet kept my sock in her mouth the entire time, obviously not wanting anything to do with a ghastly mouse when she had her trophy sock to hand.

I now need a nap. A long, mouse free nap. Meanwhile Madame Harriet hasn't stopped napping all day.

The saga continues...

UK defense minister warns of 'severe consequences' if Putin wins war in Ukraine (kyivindependent.com)

"If we allow Putin to win this war by dragging it out, and he somehow wins it by exhausting everybody else, then we will suffer the consequences. And the consequences would be incredibly severe for Europe, for Britain, for the world," Shapps said.
