Thinking of making a
"Loud Bikes Get Piano Wire"
sign for our street (effectively a crescent, with a school on it) 'cos we've recently gained a couple of twats who like to razz up and down it way above the speed limit on racing motorbikes.

I'd like them to stop, please.

@scruss This is why we're not allowed RPG's.

Blimey - according to https://thedriven.io/2024/01/25/worlds-largest-ev-battery-maker-set-to-cut-costs-in-half-by-mid-2024/ the world's largest battery manufacturer, China's CATL will be halving the price of its Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries this year. "This means the price of an average 60 kWh battery pack will have dropped from $US6,776.00 to just $3,388.00 in just 12 months, saving EV manufacturers over $3,000 per vehicle."

Our (MG4 Excite) has a 51kWh pack... So we could replace a future (post 7yr warranty) failed pack for well under US$3k...

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@lightweight Another thing to consider is that your replacement battery pack is likely to have a greater capacity than your old one as technology progresses.

Thought, aimed partly in the direction of @Br3nda, I've just been using my laptop's air vent to dry my CPAP, and it occurred to me that it might be possible to make a food dehydrator basically powered by the waste air/heat from a laptop in the same way.

Managed to get working with a pico W. The only trick was with the initial firmware load. The ESPhome menu offers direct connect an webserial, neither of which seem to be actually supported. But the download option is fine - it automagically builds a UF2 file that you just download and put in the pi yourself. After that it's all over wifi as usual.

I wonder whatever happened to the child of a friend of my sister, whose parents gifted him—some time around the year two double-aught zero—the name “Anakin”. He’d be in his early 20s now, if he wasn’t beaten to death in the schoolyard.

@Unixbigot I do recall a young brat in a supermarket in New Lynn around that time being chided by Mum going "Oh do stop that, Anakin!" Possibly one and the same?

No glass cutter? No problem. Genuine Swiss Army Knives have a saw/file blade made from very hard steel. The squared-off edge of the tip makes for a most excellent glass cutter.

@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

A with a 4mm a side working volume means a cramped workspace. I've been holding the glass beds in place with blue tape, which has its own issues. So here's my fix for that, a teeny weeny clamp.

- having difficulties using any Bluetooth device as a media player. I must be missing something. Would rather like to get it talking out of a cheap, little Bluetooth speaker. Anybody done this?
I have Bluetooth up and running - I know 'cos it has detected the wife's toothbrush! But won't detect Bluetooth audio devices in or out of pairing mode. Weird.

Great, just what we need to eliminate range anxiety and encourage EV ownership: Limiting when you're allowed to charge your car on all chargers.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/516449/govt-must-regulate-to-smooth-evs-and-data-centres-demand-on-power-grids-vector

I generate my own power. How will that work?

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@haakon Not if there is a requirement on people to use the power at that point to, say, keep their job. Then it just becomes a most excellent revenue stream and does not actually reduce demand.
