Ghost, the superb, open source, newsletter platform (and rival alternative to Substack) is offering free subscriptions to help get started with self publishing.
If you use #Substack, did you know that you can switch to @buttondown with more features? And the migration looks pretty easy. I might offer this as a service.
Because #Substack doesn't allow sex workers to post anything "pornographic" means they've decided that there absolutely is a line that cannot be crossed on their platform and they have now said OUT LOUD that literal Nazis do not cross that line.
#substack, by first refusing to ban nazis under the guise of being a "free speech" platform, and then turning around and saying "actually we'll ban some of the nazis", has taken the route that will piss off the most people possible
I've just migrated all my blog posts from #Substack to #Ghost.
If you are tempted to do the same, I can assure you the process is super simple - especially when using Ghost (Pro).
All you have to do is export your Substack data and then go to Ghost Settings → Advanced → Lab -> Substack Migration... the process takes just a few minutes, it's all drag and drop.
Lots of people throwing #Substack alternatives out there, but I haven’t seen much love for @buttondown. No idea why, because it’s awesome.
With Buttondown you get:
✅ Fully hosted
✅ Newsletter, RSS and public archive (a blog)
✅ Custom CSS for both newsletter and web
✅ Run by a really cool person who’s always adding new features
✅ That warm fuzzy feeling of supporting indie devs
If you're still using Substack for your newsletter and want to migrate to Ghost, which has announced that it will join the fediverse this year, here's a step-by-step guide by @wes. It covers costs, what you'll need, setting up Mailgun and Cloudflare, how to move over your posts and subscribers and numerous other helpful details.
Hello #WritingCommunity
Apparently #Google has changed their privacy policy and now says that they'll scrape everything you post online to train their AI tools.
I even post my #Fiction online on #Substack & my #Wordpress blog and now wonder if this is a bad idea.
They say paywalls could deter the scraping.
What do you think writers can do to protect their content? Or should we just roll over and accept that this is the way things will be from now on?
Marc Andreesen pouring $85M in funding to Substack was the original Musk buying Twitter. It was an extension of his idea to build his own publication because he hated tech media.
It’s always been a grievance play, funded by white guy VC grievers, and run by a white guy griever.
#Substack's terms say that "offending behavior includes credible threats of physical harm to people based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability or medical condition."
At the same time, their founder talks about protecting and monetizing "nazi views".
What does he think nazis want to do? Host Aryan cooking classes? Crochet swastikas?
With #substack ‘s latest admission that they’d like to keep accepting Nazi money, this is a good time to re-share a prescient article from #trans#writer Jude Doyle in 2021:
“Substack takes a small percentage of my subscription money… and they use that money to pay men who have, in several instances, stalked or harassed either me or people I care about.“
Read about their quarter mil advances to white supremecists. This is not new
