Most outrageous library patron requests in 12 years:

  1. I know you all have better candy in the back. Go get me some.
  2. Trace my family history back 950 years to William the Conqueror and I don’t want that internet stuff. I want a family tree printed on paper.
  3. Make me out a will. My kid gets everything, that isn’t too hard.
    Let’s see your top three!

To protest a display at their local public , right-wing activists thought it would be smart to check out all the featured books and threaten to keep them until the library promised to remove them from its collection.
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/22/us/pride-books-library-protest.html

It backfired. Citizens gave $15k and the city gave $30k to replace the books and expand the collection.

Do you think libraries will NOT survive and eventually become obsolete? Please respond why below and share. If there's enough respondents, it will be used for an article.

Activists rally to save Internet Archive as a lawsuit from publishers threaten to shut it down https://decrypt.co/31906/activists-rally-save-internet-archive-lawsuit-threatens

If people are smart, it's time to archive the Archive right now. In other words, fork it and turn it unto a decentralized platform. I hope someone out there is working on that.

Plus you have to think libraries need some decentralization as well as this lawsuit could kill libraries as we know them.

Recently I posted that some libraries in southern Oregon were under attack. Racist, bigoted fascists were trying to infiltrate their Board so they could ban books.

Well, the voters have spoken. Our candidates—kind people with integrity—won the election. They won!

Small elections are huge. They mean so very much. Just wanted to share, because these victories have been few and far between.

Eugen Rochko recently posted a thought:
"I think it comes down to, AI has no place in the arts. Machine-generated art has the appearance of what it is emulating, but no substance. Like cake made entirely of fondant. Or cardboard."

'Aiono' replied: "Also even if it could, like why would you automate one of the most entertaining part of being a human?"

Replace 'art' with 'writing'.

Right!

Happy writing,
Roger

My favorite browser : " Extension"

Allows you to create a list of where you have a card (borrowing privileges), and then displays ebook / audiobook availability when you visit certain book pages.

It's very cool and has saved me alot of money (borrowing vs buying).

A pack horse librarian delivering books in rural Kentucky in 1938. During the Great Depression, the Pack Horse Library Project was a Works Progress Administration (WPA) program in which the librarians, who were often called "book women" or "book ladies," delivered books to remote parts of Appalachia.

The library allows to create, read process and write PNG images.

It is #CompostingDay and we will all day celebrate this event.

The #ClimateChange gives us two options: deny it or accept the reality. We have chosen the latest.

If #climate anxiety is a thing for you, composting is a simple tool anyone can practice. A worm bin will do that job if you do not have a garden.

If you do not know how to compost there is one thing you can do, go to your local #library and grab all the books on #compost that you can find.

Please boost this message and help us inspire the #fediverse and #mastodon to be the change.

It is both pathetic and frightening that MAGA types are vilifying the American Library Association for being a conduit for pornography and that red states are therefore severing ties with this esteemed organization. You may have heard that Houston schools plan to convert libraries to disciplinary centers and fire the librarians.

What you may not have heard is that the State of Texas took over the Houston school district and installed its own superintendent.

That's the guy who is closing libraries. This is not something local residents want, and the superintended is not locally accountable,

You've no doubt heard that the Great Library of Alexandria was destroyed in a fire & with it, centuries of knowledge, learning & prose.

But that's not the actual story. The TRUE story of the destruction of the Great #Library of Alexandria has more to teach us than the #myth.

Day 1 of road trip over. Crossed the north of Tasmania and am shattered in my hotel in Stanley. An early night will be good as I'm hoping to see a sunrise from the top of Stanley's Nut tomorrow morning.

My favourite image today was of this Exchange Library in the town of Penguin in the shape of a Tardis 😀

Bicycling task of the day complete. 80 lbs or more of books (cookbooks we collected but never used) donated to the local library. Thankfully, downhill... uphill would have been quite a task. The trailer alone was about 30% more effort than usual to get back uphill. Glad I only took one box!!!
