Are there any good "feminist" out there? It doesn't necessarily have to have overt philosophically themes (but it def can), just anime that have well-written, well-rounded leading women characters.

A lot of the anime I consume has mostly hypersexualized women characters (I don't go out of my way for that, it seems like it's just kind of a staple of the medium). For instance, I really like shonens, but they can be super fan-servicey. I'd like to shake that up.

I know there are some great Miyazaki characters, but other than that, I'm not aware of many others. are very welcome.

EDIT: I wasn't expecting so many replies! 0.o Looks like there are some awesome recommendations here, thank you all so much! ❤️

All the negative and bigoted views on trans people that J K Rowling has are deeply #feminist.

When people rightly reject her views and what she does, they are taking an #antifeminist position. They will deny that ofc.

Why don't they reject the movement outright?

Why do so many people need to believe in the fiction of a benign feminism?

She also, consistent with feminism, has bigoted views of boys and men as evidenced in her "Reasons for Speaking out on Sex and Gender Issues" post on her blog

I think I will start a thread.

A movie I watched this week (by happy accident!) was Swallow.

Incredible, beautiful artistry, direction, acting, sound, color, everything, in this film. Haley Bennett was truly extraordinary as the lead. I prefer her performance to any of this year's Oscar nominees. She held me completely in suspense the whole time, bizarrely relatable.

Highly recommend watching this one, even if only for its spectacular ending!

Frustrating limitation of / : I hate how ultra-precise hashtags have to be, down to the letter, for them to show up in searches...aka not , not , etc etc etc, requiring either a whole bunch of tag-spam, or tons of research ahead of time to see what the most popular tags are (which itself is fraught, since you're dependent on tags either being posted TO your same instance, or boosted by someone else who is in your same instance...)

I assume there's supposed to be some pro-privacy reason behind this, but I'm not sure at the logic behind a lot of tags, like I feel like and should show the same posts?

Simone de Beauvoir, Feminist, Intellectual, Philosopher, and Woman

According to Beauvoir, the independence of awareness is both liberating and difficult to deal with. That person would argue that everyone is born with the ability to provide meaning to their lives. And, no matter how hard we try, our innate drive to discover meaning and make it happen in the world will never be completely satisfied.

tamsinsays, to queer

Hello, cutie.city and other instances and all ships at sea!

Welcome to Tamsin's Pinned Toot. Please enjoy your stay... unless you're a fascist, a racist, a transphobe, a homophobe, or any other flavor of garbage person, in which case please step on a LEGO forever.

What follows are a few things you might want to know about me if you plan to hang around.

So, who the heck am I?

Hi! I'm Tamsin: a white, middle-aged, queer, sapphic, nonbinary trans woman who likes doorstopper novels, director's cuts, extended remixes, table-top roleplaying games, 5-string basses, double-cutaway Les Paul Jr. guitars, beaches, forests, mountains, witchy things, living places that haven't outlawed her yet, late nights, lazy afternoons, and writing down half of everything she thinks.

I'm happily monogamously married to a polymath superhero, and we share our lives with my marvelous teenaged offspring, two adorable cats, and a host of delightful friends and co-conspirators.

Things I post about, in no particular order: #queer stuff, being a #trans girl, #magic, #music, #books, #movies, #TTRPGs, politics, #philosophy, #spirituality, making stuff, and whatever else is going though my brain at any given moment.

When I talk about #gender and #sexuality, it's probably helpful to know that I have a degree in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies (with a focus on #feminist history, queer theory, and trans studies) from the University of Washington. Sometimes I joke that I had to get a degree to realize I'm a gay trans girl, which isn't quite true, but still makes me laugh.

I'm exactly the kind of person who likes prog rock, punk rock, post-punk, trip-hop, house, dark folk, black metal, '70s funk, old-school R&B, early rock'n'roll, acid rock, acid folk, blues, early music, minimalist composers, anime soundtracks, and everything Prince ever recorded.

I have a profound fear of spiders, heights, and isolation.

Sometimes I make things. I craft, I cook, I play (and occasionally run) role-playing games, I play (and occasionally write) music and songs. Most of all, though, I write: essays, poetry, stories, and—when I was feeling particularly sassy—a whole-ass book about gender, sexuality, and queerness for witches, Pagans, and occultists. (If you want to check that last one out, here's the publisher's page: https://llewellyn.com/product.php?ean=9780738761329)

My politics are a simple story: I started out as a liberal in the 1980s and, flying in the face of conventional wisdom, became increasingly leftist as time went by. I support universal healthcare, universal basic income, BLM, antifa, indigenous rights, trans rights, queer resistance, sex workers, undocumented and migrant rights, disability rights, autistic people, plural folks, defunding the police, and radical inclusivity. I'm not an uncritical leftist, however, and I'm probably not ideologically pure enough for most movements. (Then again, I'm a gay trans girl, so most leftist movements don't want me around anyway.)

I have no quarter for fascism, racism, colonialism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, transmisogyny, ableism, exclusionary gatekeepers. I think all modern conservative movements are intrinsically evil, and if that describes you, exit the ride now. You're gonna have a real bad time otherwise. (I also recommend fixing your heart or, alternately, dying in a fire. Your choice.)

I've never been one of the Cool Kids™, and I never will be. I'm just an middle-aged geek.girl: sad in some ways, happy in many others, with a messy bookstore for a brain and a whirlwind of a heart which loves fiercely, if sometimes clumsily.

It's nice to meet you. 🥰

TL;DR post because I'm too prone to verbosity:

  • / who tries to raise awareness about many other / issues using the "clickbait" of my heinous female nipples on my video series Topless Topics (you can search by subject or interviewee at https://www.toplesstopics.org to see the -unfriendly version on Peertube or the super- version on Youtube)
  • also a enthusiast, mostly but down for anything but sports and realistic shooters, mostly. Also dabble in s and other board games but it's hard to find the right balance between "boringly easy" and "so complicated I get too frustrated and give up before the first role of the dice"
  • / crafter, mostly but dabbling in a lot in other crafts like and a lot else
  • especially and "high functioning" autism (I love to carry on conversations and try my best not to do all the talking, but I have a hard time reading peoples' true emotions so I default to thinking everyone's mad at me all the time 😂 )
  • fan, especially and s. All pets are good pets tho!
  • , pro- though not a sex worker myself (despite all my videos getting categorized as "sexually explicit nudity" 🙄 )
  • love watching movies and shows about and -- and/or so-called rather than guts and jump scares. I used to read a lot of fantasy and romance also, but social media broke my brain so I have a hard time staying focused on books now 😩
  • also love especially and . Not really into superhero type comics, unless they're the newer ones like the "New 52". I prefer self-contained series with a little bit of weirdness to them like Saga, Rat Queens, and a bunch others I can't remember the names of right now. Often I'll go to the library and check out a fat stack of whatever comics they have, mostly standalones though since they rarely have multiple comic books in a series available in sequential order.

Oops I got too wordy again, better cut it off here 😅

Basically, holler at me if you're a progressive, a gamer, or a parent who is also one or both of the other two things!

I'm seriously considering starting a whole new Youtube channel that will have reposts of all my 10+ years of videos that talk about all sorts of and issues (but not limited to that), but with a less -triggering name than my current name . Maybe "Top Equality Topics" ? sounds a bit dry, like an actual roundtable political commentary channel like TYT, while my videos are very usually-single-host "personality based", but could also be a double entendre for both "top" as in "upper body" and "top" as in "most popular/important/etc"

I just love how "Topless Topics" flows, but yeah in retrospect that name was doomed for failure...silly me, I thought censorship of "female looking chests" but not "male looking chests" might actually have IMPROVED over the last decade, how naive :p

Koren Publishers has just released "The Madwoman in the Rabbi's Attic" by Gila Fine. The book focuses on how the women mentioned in the #Talmud are more complex than we think at first reading ~ the book finds early #feminist views of #marriage sex, childbirth, and what it means to be a woman buried within the Talmud.

Koren Publishers has made available for free on their website the excellent introduction to this book. You can read it here: https://korenpub.com/cdn/shop/files/justfront_madwoman-1.pdf?v=1713264934&21199

I taught my first class sessions of the semester this week, and in person! We discussed institutional and systemic #racism, black #feminist thought on classroom community, etc. And it's a science teaching course. The students (very diverse ethnically, linguistically, etc) were engaged and excited by our discussions. Which makes me feel like we're gonna be OK in the future.

I'm, glad I don't work at an insitution of #HigherEd in FL or TX. Equity and justice are the foundations of teaching and learning.

#Colorado is a great place to live and work.

Emma Goldman, U.S. anarchist, #feminist - compelling advocate of free speech, the eight-hour work day, and birth control, was arrested in New York City on Feb. 11, 1916, just prior to giving another public lecture on family planning.

She was charged with violating the Comstock Act, an 1873 statute banning transportation of "obscene" matter through the mails or across state lines.

At the time, federal courts interpreted the statute as prohibiting distribution of #contraception information.
