Is this one of those "good guys with a gun?" An armed off-duty security guard thought three teens were going to rob a store. They weren't; they were returning a BB gun. Now one of the teens is dead because the wannabe hero shot one of the kids and "stood over the teen on the ground and continued to fire." Big man hero is in jail on charges of for second-degree murder. If he hadn't been armed, he would've dialed 911, he'd be free, and the kid would be alive.

A rare tornado just went thru heavily populated Montgomery County, MD, northwest of Washington D.C. Now headed towards Baltimore.

Not sure if it touched down or caused heavy damage.

INCREDIBLE images from China's Chang’e 6 lander, which landed on the far side of the moon late on June 1 and lifted off in an ascent vehicle with the first lunar samples from the far side of the moon yesterday.

Finally it looks like the new Kharkiv offensive is beginning to fall apart for Putin. According to multiple reports, a large number of Russian soldiers have surrendered to the Ukrainian marines of the 36th brigade in Vovchansk.

Recently, I saw a video of a Russian soldier criticizing his orders in strong terms, because dozens of his comrades had been killed.

This is the problem with Putin’s meat assaults — humans have a way of not wanting to die.

I’m excited to say that I turned in my manuscript for the ActivityPub book for O’Reilly Media today. I started working on it in September of 2023, with a lot of interim checkpoints and deadlines since. In April 2024, I finished the first draft of the manuscript. Over the month of May, I’ve been working on improvements suggested by the technical reviewers who agreed to look over the book, and from my own re-read.

In total, my TODO file for this month has about 250 changes to be made. Some are small — just changing a word or two — but one required adding a whole new chapter, and many required multi-paragraph sections.

I took the last week of May off from my work at Open Earth Foundation to concentrate on making changes. My team was really supportive, which I deeply appreciated. I went to our country house in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, and I spent the week writing, editing, drawing and thinking.

Now, the next stage of book making starts: production. The production team at O’Reilly will be copyediting, indexing, and laying out the book. Their designers will be taking my UML diagrams and turning them into professional-looking illustrations. We have two rounds of quality control on code samples and fact checking on content.

In September 2024, the final e-book will be available for sale. I’ll have a link here for the pre-sale version when it comes out. If you’re eager to read the book, I highly recommend reviewing the early release version.

Thanks so much to my friends, family and colleagues who’ve made space and time for me to do this work. It has meant a lot to me. I hope the final product helps more developers create cool projects using ActivityPub.

from sunset at Dog Mountain a few days ago. The hills are alive with the sound of balsam root jumping around! Mainly because it was pretty windy! Also around were paintbrush here and there, lots of cow-parsnip(?) and occasional chocolate lily! Seems like the lupines are finished for the season.

Bright yellow sunflower-like balsam root in the lower foreground, a bunch of long stalked white cow-parsnip(?), and trees in the background with blue sky visible through the branches.
A single tree that seems to be dancing in a field of blossoming balsomroot under a blue sky.
Chocolate Lily, aka checker lily, aka Fritillaria affinis. Small flowers that have a kind of mottled texture of dark red with yellow sprinkles.

I think my favorite program in the entire linux/unix toolchain is "file". Did you even know about this program? It's on every system including MacOS and it's magic. You run it on any file and it just tells you what it is. Any file. I don't know who keeps this updated but it supports surprising things. Like it knows Windows file formats. If it's a executable it tells you if it's 32- or 64- bit. If it's an image it tells you the size and channels. If the file extension lies it just figures it out.

When you meet someone in real life who is on X, who does not understand the value of switching to Mastodon, I recommend telling them that unlike X…

  1. Mastodon is both free and ad free for all users

  2. Everyone gets the same set of features, so editing typos or writing longer posts is not reserved for the rich kids.

  3. There is no algorithm, so everyone's content spreads if we the users decide it is great content.

BREAKING: Live Nation has confirmed Ticketmaster was hacked. The company says personal information was stolen, though has yet to say who (likely customers).

A cybercriminal claims to be selling 560 million customer records on a known cybercrime forum.

I hope folks in the US remember this , Since 9/11 - more service members and veterans die by suicide than combat every year.

I'm a veteran and I struggle with depression and PTSD. I lost one of my brothers-in-arms and groomsmen to drug abuse and suicide. There isn't a week that goes by where I don't think of him; today I write this through ... https://kjaymiller.com/microblog/202405272047.html
