@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com

Got two Turing tables and some microcode.

I work on back-end server-y type stuff at a place that keeps rockin' the free web. I like rust, python, and horrible puns (not necessarily in that order).

I tend to be nice for selfish reasons (I don't like hanging out with jerks).

This morning I read an account of quite possibly the best sasquatch story I've ever heard, including a little girl and a sasquatch mirroring each other's actions, clapping and stomping while the parents looked on in horror too afraid to do anything.

Complex systems are complex.

Had a few inadvertent learning opportunities these past few weeks. Some of them have been easy to sort out, others required the tech equivalent of a Ouija board.

Many could have been solved by project just writing things down.

Honestly, this is a good read for both proponents and skeptics.

It’s a Readout about how to deal with AI Openness, but also describes the various bits that go into creating and running an LLM model.

It’s only 15 pages, so it’s a quick read.

OK this might be the right idea. You fill it with books, they don't get dusty... they go in the closet or deep in some storage nook.

Then in 15 years you can look at them and maybe part with a few... I can do this!

Elon Musk is secretly pro-union.

Why do I say that?

Well, he's so focused on giving labor power he effectively forced them to strike against Tesla.

Truly, 8 dimensional Rochambeau going on there.

Let me decipher that for you:

They want to use the GPS and other telemetry from YOUR CAR to supposedly improve traffic flow.

Fuck no.

Is it possible to devise a kind of encryption that will grow easier to break based on the passage of time? A key that can be reliably produced with enough calculations could be a start, but you can’t account for faster computers. Maybe a system that has a host of parameters based on other computers and sensors? but inputs can be faked. I don’t know if this question really even makes sense: it seems to bush against something fundamental and impossible.

jrconlin,
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@futurebird

@MrBerard is pretty much right. The problem with any backdoor is that it's immediately accessible, making the encryption worthless. Key escrows, time based keys, distributed keys, can all be routinely defeated.

Even quantum attacks are basically fancy brute forces, and one solution is to just build bigger keys.

I kinda like that one of the Post Quantum encryption methods is fancy one time pad:

jrconlin,
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@MrBerard @futurebird

You mean other than asking them what they think "SLP" stands for on a playback screen?

Not sure I follow your question, though. Zero-knowledge just means that you both can do a proof without knowledge of each others keys. Zero-trust means that you don't assume anything about the other.

Age has nothing to do with either of those. Are you thinking more identity management? (That's it's own pile of fun and vulnerabilities.)

jrconlin,
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@MrBerard @futurebird

FWIW, the problem with identity management is that having one "key" means it's absolutely the primary target for hackers. (Think how your Social Security number is not to be used for identification, and yet...)

There are ways to prove identity, but they require multiple parts and are hard. PassKeys tried, but it's more a vendor lock in thing than a security mechanism as of late.

They're more secure than passwords, but they're not as universal as the spec wants.

Having built something similar in the past, a bit of advice:

  1. Make sure you measure the location of the power plug and factor in how flexible the USB cable may not be. (I solved the problem by using a right angle connector, but it was not pleasant)

  2. Pi's get surprisingly hot in small containers without good air flow. Don't forget that the CPU idles around 50-60°C. (The one that's monitoring my solar goes over 65° daily.)

It doesn't provide backup codes... huh.

It then still SENDS A GODDAM TEXT MESSAGE TO MAKE SURE "YOU'RE YOU". Argh.

Look, t-mobile. The reason I am turning on TOTP is because your security is absolutely shit and seems like anyone with $20 in loose change can SIM-Swap your number, so yeah, IMPLEMENT GODDAM BACKUP CODES YOU COWARDS!
