“regular people” whoever that is… will never use the crunchy homemade internet if they have the option of slick apps instead. You can’t hire designers, you don’t have an advertising budget, your project with its dreamy cooperative ethos is an anathema to tech media who don’t see the point in mentioning it exists.

“regular people” like pop-ups, and bots, and having their data sold to the highest bidder, they like porn spam, and scammers and discourse so broken it causes mental harm. Right?

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

How much more can regular people take? They are calling Twitter the new “something awful” now. But for some reason serious academics, journalists, artists, and other sorts remain.

It’s interesting that these people are again being offered free (and mandatory) blue checks again … to get them to stay I guess.

Maybe that’s a good sign— maybe it’s a sign threads or blue sky is becoming the new walled garden.

Tear down the walls. Connect all LANs

@mattmcirvin Totally. The notion that suffering is required needs to go. We should make it as easy and as welcoming as we can with our limited resources.

Trump campaign is asking for down-ballot candidates who use his name, image and likeness in fundraising appeals to give at least 5 percent of the proceeds to the campaign. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/04/17/trump-campaign-fundraising-five-percent-00152830

This is too rich. That’s the opposite of what party learship is meant to do. But they should go on with it. The weakening of local GOP power is good imo. Wow. The sheer nerve.

A random artwork from my gallery:

"The Madonna with the Long Neck" — 2018

Due to the religious dogma of the time, Parmigianino was unable to express his full intentions in his version of The Madonna with the Long Neck. I've fixed it for him.

This ant cartoon by falseknees over on tumblr really captures what I think it's like to be an ant.

Everyone is busy. No one really knows what they are doing.

@msbellows

From watching them I think they do. They even have persistent personality traits such as being more likely to take risks, or more cautious.

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

@msbellows It’s a little overwhelming to contemplate isn’t it? I don’t imagine they have what we’d recognize as a steam of consciousness, or deep reflective thoughts. But, they aren’t exactly just little robots that get some signal, or pheromone and all have the same response— or even have the same response from one stimulus to the next. Each ant is integrating a rather large set of stimuli— and then making decisions also informed by past experiences. 1/

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

@msbellows Individuality is critical to their famously effective group problem solving methods. If all ants were the same, predictable like machines— they wouldn’t make “discoveries” The range of ant behaviors means most of things an ant might do, given enough ants, get done. No, they are so numerous & diverse one ant is bound to try anything that can be tried. The other part of their method is rapidly communicating success— now a steam of ants is flowing out through the tiny crack. 2/2

There are AI or otherwise programmatically generated "How To" pages. This one on shortening your dishwasher hose has an interesting choice of image...

If your hose looks like that the "shortening" isn't going to go very well.

Can ants survive by drinking antifreeze? If they live in the car that hasn't left the garage in two months, are they going out for water?

I doubt it!

Husband: There's a spider on my shirt can you get it?
I catch the tiny grain sized spider
Me: I'm feeding this to the girls!
Husband: Nooooo! That's horrible.
Me: But they love spiders the most...
Husband: You have to give it a chance put it outside.
Me: It's too cold it will die. Let me just feed-
Husband: 🥺
Me: OK fine. I'll put it on the bookshelf.

I leave the spider in an open tiny glass vial on its side on the shelf.

The spider is lazy. When I get home it's built a web in the jar.

futurebird, (edited )
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

I point out the spider will probably eat escaped ants.

But it's too small to do that yet. So I give it a fruit fly since I don't see how it expects to catch anything to eat living in a glass vial on a bookshelf.

So now we have a free range pet tiny spider and somehow I'm the one who must feed it.

When it's bigger I'll feed it to the ants...

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

I've been told I may not feed it to the ants when it's bigger.

To be fair it's a good location for escaped ants. They really don't look where they are going.

Given the style of web, and the running in circles to catch food I think this is Oecobiidae

I'm hoping it wanders off so my husband forgets about it. But it seems to really like the little jar for some reason.

As people who follow what I’ve had to say on AI “Art” know, I'm more ambiguous on it than most Mastodonians, but having spent a bit of time on with the filter off, oh my!

It's pretty foolish to let your platform be spammed like that, some people are auto-uploading dozens a day. I think even the prompting is automated. And it's just so… boring . And it barely gets any engagement anyhow.

This is the great rock in the park where the DeKay’s brown snake lives. It’s a little chunk of wild in the middle of the city. A buried brook runs under it. I suspect it’s a location of maximum species diversity and density in this area. The rock was split in two to build the courthouse. What remains is precious and rebuffs development by being inconvenient and in a park.

I have no idea how you'd select a jury from New Yorkers. People here are a bunch of stubborn, idiosyncratic, weirdos.

I wouldn't worry about a "Secret Trump fan" on the jury I'd be worried about:

  1. Hustlers: genius who is going to sell their story for movie or something
  2. The Normal Except for ONE THING guy: Perfectly normal except ... they don't trust nurses.
  3. The TOO fair. A NYC liberal who is trying so hard to be fair they are biased the other way.
futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

@3dogcouch @PeterLG @godofbiscuits

Oh that's right! They mentioned some of the text from one of the social media posts of one of the jurors. That was a bad move!

It's not too late to do this over and put them in a hotel. I understand that the charge isn't "hefty" enough to merit sequestering generally but the public interest and the inevitability that someone will meddle means that no one should have a CLUE who is on the jury.

I have a formula for large sums like that that estimates the rate of value decay under a sustained withdraw.

One would want to randomize it a little first before doing the withdraw.

Lot of withdrawing going on right now. Places like Coinbase have 10k and 50k limits on conversion to cash. Which kind of gives the game away.

If you are an artist don't feel like you need to only post new work. Much of your work will be new to the people following you. And if you share a little about why you created it, or how you made it, or even how you see it differently, those who have seen it before will still find it fresh.

"I drew this six years ago, if I did it today I would ..."

"I remember drawing this during ..."

"This was the first time I tried to draw..."

etc.

I love these kinds of posts from artists.

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

@takios

There are some accounts that mirror their accounts here from other social media and this can lead to a sudden flood of spammy posts coming in batches. This is a bad. Ideally you want people to talk to you and talk to each other in response to your posts, but if you post too much (and don't reply to your replies) the few responses you get will be spread out and no conversation will develop.

Automating posts is hard to do effectively. (Looking at you @streetsblognyc )

tumblr's link system for posts does not support links with @ in them in some cases.

"Chain migration" is the BEST kind of immigration. You want people who move to you country to have a local network and support. You want new immigrants to bring their family, and the economic activity they generate and the value they add to communities to be in YOUR country.

I can't believe we let them use it like a slur. It's good and do it more.

What? They brought their elderly parents? That's good for US and for them (the new American we want to be successful and happy.) RIGHT?

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

@Magooish @cohomologyisFUN The negatives amount to this: in any population of people some will be annoying, lawless or quarrelsome— if you take objections to immigration at face value. But these observations don’t hold up to scrutiny. No, there is something else that stirs the hatred: a fear of change.

Richard Dawkins a famous atheist bemoans the imaginary notion the churches will be replaced with mosques— And this is peculiar to me not just for being nonsense… 1/
