Why do so many Democrats think that, as important as abortion rights are, it is ok to support Democratic warmongers who literally are responsible for killing women and children in other countries because of abortion?

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@rchusid ill try to answer this honestly as a democrat who will vote for Biden. I’m horrified by his choices in the Middle East. But I’m trying to think of how to bring about the better outcomes. Not voting for Biden makes it more likely Trump wins, and as far as I can tell, no more likely democrats “learn a lesson” (ie didn’t after Nader or Stein).

Trump winning is a horrible outcome for so many reasons. Climate is top of my mind. With no upside. So I make the best chess move I have.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@rchusid no, I don’t think we’re getting the same horrible results as we could. Things are bad, but they could be much much much worse.

And Nader may have caused a blip in left leaning politicking, but bush did horrific things. Would I trade that blip for the Iraq war? Torture? The complete missed opportunity on climate? No way.

We have got to find a better way to move left than crossing our arms during presidential elections. The upside is too small and the downside far too dire.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@rchusid oh man. I think it’s really good to be critical of dem politicians. But to believe Biden is worse for Americans and the world than Bush and Cheney were… and to believe the dems will provide a sufficiently strong push back to an emboldened Trump with a more experienced, more loyal set of toadies…

It’s just not reasonable.

Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke you can’t have a birth rate crisis and a border crisis at the same time. Unless you’re racist. So…

It’s !

When cops ask you questions, ask for a lawyer and then STFU:

  • I am not discussing how I’m doing or where I’m going.

  • Am I free to leave?🧵

  • I am not answering any questions.

  • If they ask to search anything: "I do not consent to a search."

  • I want to speak to a lawyer.

Cops are only REQUIRED to give you Miranda warnings if you are “in custody.” “Not free to go” is an oversimplification.

Remember you can always invoke your rights even when you aren’t in custody.🧵

@D_J_Nathanson what about if a cop comes and say knocks on your door asking if you’ve seen anything? Ok to talk to them or still wait for a lawyer?

    @RickiTarr menopause is FASCINATING. almost no species exhibit it (no matter how long they live.) it’s like us, orcas, some weird moles or something? People think it’s basically so that older matriarchs could care for their grandchildren without competing with them.

    Doesn’t mean it’s fun. But it is an evolved strategy that points to communal, intergenerational child rearing as a key to our success!

    I used to post of a lot of snarky tech Hot Takes.

    I have found it increasingly difficult to maintain a perpetual state of cynicism and snark.

    For the most part, tech is full of people trying to do the right thing most of the time in order to care for their loved ones.

    The bad apples — and boy are there some bad ones — are better snarked about people other than me.

    TLDR: I’m tired and snark is temporarily fun but ultimately draining to the work at hand.

    I seriously hate weddings.

    I don’t want to waste my day/night sitting through a boring ceremony and watching an attention-seeking bride prance around like a princess while I’m stuck at a table eating cold food and making smalltalk with a stranger about their boring job.

    Jackiemauro,

    @Alice I had no idea about any of these traditions till like last year 😂. Thank god for growing up with queer parents.

    When I got married we had just parents at the ceremony in city hall, then I got a bunch of food ordered from a great restaurant and truly an absurd amount of booze and had a big house party with all my friends till like 4am.

    No gifts. No other parties involved. It was one of the most fun nights of my life.

    Tell me a silly/funny childhood story!

    I'll start:

    One time in Sunday School, the teacher was talking about the difference between humans and animals, and mentioned that Animals had Tails and humans didn't. I let her know this was not true, because my Dad had a tail, just in the front, instead of the back. The teacher was silent for several seconds, and tried to correct me in a church appropriate way, but I doubled down, and insisted that my little brothers also had front tails too. This got so heated that the teacher had to go get my parents to take me out of Sunday School.

    @Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

    @TheJen @RickiTarr these stories always melt my little shit stirrer reform jew brain. My husband was kicked out of Sunday school for arguing too. I thought the whole point was to argue! But I’m sorry that happened to you, it seems really awful to experience as a kid.

    @TheJen @RickiTarr yea I mean as an adult it sort of seems like a badge of honor to be kicked out of such a narrow minded group. Can you imagine being so insecure in your understanding of your own sacred text that you couldn’t even manage the questions of a 5 year old?? Yeesh.

    So I booked a flight for next week, the first time in quite a while

    At first I was looking at United, but a lot of their planes were Max 8s or Max 9s, or just Boeing in general, and I was like ... do I realllllly want to roll those bones

    Then realized Delta flew the same routes but with Airbuses

    So: Delta

    I wonder how many other people are making these sorts of calculations?

But the ticket is still expensive even for the students, I applied for Opportunity Scholarships but haven’t got any replies from @Posit till now. I doubt is it worthwhile to spend $1198 on a 3-day conference mainly for the career fair? Can anyone have some experiences of posit give some advice? Really appreciate it @rstats
