$660M crypto money to “save humanity from the existential risk of AI.” Same people wrote a few years ago how “without AI we are doomed.” Selling utopia and apocalypse for billions. No one knows how to circle money amongst themselves like these people.

@timnitGebru and if they really crave being the saviors of humanity—they could actually do that! There is an actual thing we need to do here that rich people could really help out on.

Jesus like if we promise to throw them a parade or something for limiting climate change can we get them to drop this dumb AI thing? Statues? What to they need here?

#Boeing had come under the spell of a seductive new theory of “knowledge” possessed by a skilled & experienced workforce as essentially not worth the ⬆️HC costs. CEO McNerney purged the veterans into early retirement. He called longtime engineers & skilled machinists -those who cared too much about the integrity of the planes & not enough about the stock price were “phenomenally talented assholes"-ostracized them into leaving the co-.

#ClimateChange should never be hidden behind a content warning.

I will never be sorry for the worries about our planet or care to offend those who could not care less about it.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@compost I get where you’re coming from, but I actually think cw’s are one of the most incredible things about this site. It’s not about protecting those who don’t care—they’re not bothered by it anyway. It’s about giving people who do care a choice about when to engage and when to have a more lighthearted experience.

think being surprised with something really stressful when you’re just trying to look at cat pictures is actually really hard on our psyches and doesn’t get us to solutions

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@compost I am in no way disagreeing with you about the urgency. And I fully understand the feeling that if I could just grab people by the (virtual) shoulders and shake them and show them the horrors that await us I could finally bring about change.

But I just don’t think that’s how it works. And since you never know on social media whose shoulders you’re grabbing, it has the potential to harm people who are nominally on your side.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@compost we don’t disagree here. The question is just how best to do that.

And my contention is that putting climate horrors in front of people who don’t want to see it isn’t effective. And can harm other people who do care about climate. And that cw’s are a really wonderful tool here generally that I don’t want to see lost.

But I really, really get your fury and fear and frustration. I feel it too.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@compost if you think this kind of posting makes a positive difference, obviously I’m not going to stop you. But for me, my thinking is:

  1. the number of people I will alert to climate change on mastodon is basically 0
  2. I want to build a consensual and not confrontational social media space, and cw’s are a good tool for that
  3. there are more effective actions I can take outside of social media that don’t leave me feeling like I’m screaming into a void.
Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@compost i am so glad to hear you have inspired such powerful behavioral change! I will keep putting cw’s where I believe I could cause harm, because of my experience on other sites that shredded my mental health. But we do not all have to act the same! Thanks for engaging with me and with the good fight!!

So I’ve been here a little while and I still poke my head into ig now and then but im not invested anymore.

I’ve noticed a huge difference in my mental health. Huge.

Ive also noticed when I talk to friends on ig or twitter or TikTok it feels a little bit like talking to smokers.

I feel like a scold but I also feel like…you know this is bad for you. Why are you still on there? And worse, why are you getting news there?

Anyone else have this experience?

@grrrr_shark @HeavenlyPossum @SallyStrange @blogdiva it really seems like there are some personalities that need a simple dogmatic belief system to latch onto that tells them they’re always right, and better and smarter than everyone else, and don’t need to follow the rules that apply to the lowly masses.

I mean, it’s wild to say you’re an empiricist and then have so little willingness to be wrong. That’s like…the whole thing.

I don’t love Zuni. But I also don’t love paying $75/80 for roast chicken.

It’s so weird that people love it so much and have so much baggage about it.

While we are here, I also don’t love In-N-Out or Swan Oyster Depot

What is the specific law that Meta is beholden to, that TikTok is not beholden to, because TikTok has foreign investors?

If SoftBank secretly buys up 60% of Meta stock over time, then publicly announces it, does Meta suddenly get to ignore this magical law?

Has this magical law ever been exercised against a social media platform?

Is anyone even pretending to answer these questions?

Or are we just accepting that "The biggest problem with TikTok, is that I don't own it!😀"

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke apparently the same basic thing happened to Grindr and they did just sell it to an American company also after national security concerns. So at least for the “has this ever happened before” question the answer appears to be yes.

This is probably my worst poll, but I'm curious, for science:

I have/had:

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@RickiTarr I hit “great parents” and my mom definitely parented to break awful cycles of serious serious abuse. Her grandfather threw her father out a window and broke his arm. Her father was…terrible. She never hit me. She always gave me space to be myself. She told me her main goal was to make sure I felt safe. And I did. I am so grateful. And now that I’m a parent I just can’t fathom how hard it is to parent in a totally different way than you were parented.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@Urban_Hermit @RickiTarr I hope you know this in your bones, but let me just reiterate: you deserved so much better as a child. Every child is an absolute treasure and should be loved, protected and cherished. You deserved to feel safe and stable. You deserved to be free from the burden of your parents’ baggage, which was their own to bear. And you, as an adult, deserve repair. Even if you won’t get it, you deserve it.

Jackiemauro,

I wish I could truly make people understand how much of a cult Conservative Fundamentalism is, and how much it truly brainwashes you. It is easy to say, "How can those people be so stupid, how can they not see?", but unless you've been inside it, you cannot understand how much effort is put into making sure that people cannot understand or see.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@RickiTarr Totally agree. I think I’m deciding that part of being a good ally is playing this difficult role where you have lots of patience and kindness and empathy for people who are acting cruelly. I can be the person who shares what I’ve learned and opens the door to learning together without judgement or recrimination or shame, because I’m not defending my own humanity in those moments. And I think as you say that approach is more effective. Even if it feels so hard sometimes.

KatM, to random
@KatM@mastodon.social avatar

When we talk about raising the price of something in order to decrease demand, just remember… the only demand we’re decreasing is among those folks who can no longer afford said thing. Increase the taxes on fuel and you’re making it harder for lower income folks, not the wealthy who can pay any price you demand. Demand may decline, but it may also be punishing to the people just trying to get to work, not the jet-class.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@KatM @thesquirrelfish @azonenberg @jenk3 yea 100% agree. And honestly at this point with the incredible technical advances we’ve seen, I think it’s basically time to throw out the idea that fighting climate change requires taking away anything really.

EVs are great cars. E-bikes are an incredible alternative in lots of places. They should be subsidized and their infrastructure should be built out.

And fundamentally we need broad buy in. The gnd is still good policy I think.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@thesquirrelfish @KatM @azonenberg @jenk3 agreed! But a gas tax REALLY won’t reduce the number of EVs. Policies to make biking / walking / transit better will. This is all just a question of how we get where we want to go (literally and figuratively, ha!) and I think the point is that regressive punitive policies should not be our first resort.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@KatM @thesquirrelfish @azonenberg @jenk3 yea I live in a dense city and all my life relied on transit and biking (and walking just miles and miles). But with two kids it’s really hard, you really come to understand how threadbare and deprioritized even “good” systems are for anyone but the most able and unburdened.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@thesquirrelfish @KatM @azonenberg @jenk3 I mean, there are lots of things that are a necessity that we don’t provide for free or universally…are you saying if we acknowledge that cars are currently a necessity, we would need to advocate for universal free cars? I’m not sure that tracks, or would be good policy.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@thesquirrelfish @KatM @azonenberg @jenk3

Hmm I see the logic but it seems unhelpfully absolutist to me. I think we need to acknowledge that getting to a situation where everyone can easily do without a car is going to take a really long time. And also acknowledge that we can and must transition away from ICE’s quickly with as much political buy in and practicality as possible.

A gas tax is regressive. Giving everyone an EV is impracticable. We’re going to have to find a middle road (ha!)

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@thesquirrelfish @KatM @azonenberg @jenk3 I feel like we’re arguing past each other a bit. I fully agree everything should be accessible without a car. I’m just saying that the distance between here and a car free us is really long, and we need to get rid of ICE’s in a shorter time frame.

What’s the best way to do it? I’m not sure! Not a gas tax, and probably EVs will be involved. Definitely requires way way more transit and bike infrastructure.

I'm gonna be honest y'all, it's felt dark lately, and for good reason, LGBTQ+ rights in the balance, an election coming up, women struggling to get basic Healthcare, mass shootings, SCOTUS, the environment. The list goes on and on, and the media twists everything to sound even worse, or just straight up ignores actual news. But here's the thing, I know a lot of you, and the fact that you exist in the world gives me hope. You care about the future and you want good things, and so do I, and as long as that spark is there, we have hope. So, let's focus on some good today! Share a good headline, some positive news either on a larger scale or just something personal, a nice picture you took, a funny meme or video, whatever made you feel good or at least, gave you a smile. Let's share some joy!
