Is Trump ahead in the polls, because Biden is losing support amongst one of his key demographics: Black men? Or are the polls all a lie?

Trump ahead in polls?
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/13/us/politics/biden-trump-battleground-poll.html

Biden camp doesn't believe the polls?
https://www.axios.com/2024/05/14/biden-polls-denial-trump-2024-election

Either way, the most important thing to do, is to ignore, insult, argue with, and generally disrespect, Black men online! 🤡 Find a Black man, and yell "Trump is worse!" in his face as hard as you can! Swear at him, and threaten him with violence!

@mekkaokereke man online conversations are so strange. It’s like jumping in to talk when youre only hearing one side of a phone call.

Cause of course my brain says “I AM trying to work on the structural things, but that’s invisible and slow. In the meantime, I really hope hypothetical lady in the bar doesn’t bring home the guy who’s gonna condemn me to death by sepsis.”

But I didn’t hear the scolding that likely prompted this post. So my response is likely out of context and driven by fear.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke I will say, there is an aspect to this discussion that irks me. And again it may just be lack of context. But I feel like there is a temptation to say “if Trump wins it’s not MY fault. It’s [blank]’s fault!” And I think those with the most privilege bear the most responsibility, BUT I think if Trump is elected it is all of our faults, especially if we are not actively taking steps to avoid it.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke

We owe each other, all of us: immigrants, women, trans kids, on and on. No one should feel absolved from effort. That’s not to say anyone is responsible for saving the rest of us, particularly not Black or other excluded groups. But we all have agency and responsibility. No one can sit on their hands and then feel blameless when the consequences hit us.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke I don’t think we are under any obligation to yell at each other. But I do feel a strong sense of obligation to the people who will be brutalized under Trump to do my best to keep him from being elected. Maybe that obligation extends only to my own vote. Or certainly in my case to trying to convince other white people not to give him their vote. But I know that if I don’t do everything I can, the first time I read about a baby at the border torn from its mothers arms, that’s on me.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke no I haven’t done everything I can on either of those. Or everything I can on climate. Or Gaza. Or mass incarceration. Or trans rights. Or abortion. No one can do everything they can on everything they care about. We do what we are able to, yes all the time, not just voting. And we hold ourselves accountable when we fall short. It’s my task as much as anyone’s to address these things. I don’t think anyone can just say they don’t have to work on them.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke but I do get the feeling of like “I’m sick of carrying this shit, to my great detriment and your great benefit. You pick it up for once!”

Certainly that’s true. It’s my task to pick it up and carry much more than people like me have done historically. And convince my compatriots to do the same.

I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@RickiTarr my kids aren’t white and I really don’t think I’m gonna put books like this anywhere near them until they’re much older and hopefully have had time to internalize just how frickin awesome they are.

I don’t know how I feel about their white compatriots reading these books with proper context

If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...

Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.

https://insideevs.com/news/719283/chinese-ev-tariffs-biden-quadruple/

We can't allow the US to get off of fossil fuels... unless US billionaires win! 🤡

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke @cshlan I mean just to be fair 1) Trump promises even more tariffs (https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2024/03/18/politics/donald-trump-tariffs-trade-war) and 2) the IRA does funnel a ton of money towards battery manufacturing and subsidizes the purchase of ev’s.

This is not me trying to say Biden is great, just adding context

I wish I had a Korean tea house in SF where I can have non-caffeinated jujube tea exactly like my dad makes it, at 7:45pm too. (Ye Cafe, K-town)

It has no business being so good and cool, this place.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@skinnylatte @gglockner oh no! Are you leaving? Definitely go where you’ll be happiest but it makes me so sad to see SF lose interesting people. I’m so hopeful its next iteration is something way better than the tech bro shit.

"Randomized trials cannot address all causal questions of importance in medicine and health policy and may have limited generalizability; thus, investigators may need to use observational studies as a source of evidence to address causal questions. The challenge, then, is to balance the importance of addressing the causal questions for which observational studies are needed with caution regarding the reliance on strong assumptions to support causal conclusions."

A challenge of our time truly

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@grimalkina oh man this was just too real a thread for Friday morning! It always bummed me out that I would want to study some question that actually mattered but it wasn’t “worth” it cause it could never be published .

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@grimalkina also just to vent: I hate that if you say you want to do observational causal inference people just go: “oh, economics?”

NO.

Gotta respect the doubling down! Replying to me posting some dude saying "Trump is worse!" then blocking me, with saying "Trump is worse!" then blocking me too! The commitment to the bit is impressive!

Listen, you can get as mad as you want. You can call Black folk criticizing Biden "Bitching" if you want. We're still going to do it.

The CDC under Biden dropped the Covid isolation period from "5 days" to "vibes days." Not Trump.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke i don’t think Biden is beyond criticism by any means. But I do think his Covid response was better.

We can’t forget that Trump just fully failed on all fronts. He put kushner in charge for gods sake. Just comparing the length of recommended isolation is not a good metric.

Biden managed to get multiple rounds of vaccine to any American who wanted it. Free. In a local pharmacy. And mailed everyone free tests.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke boy we heard a lot less about “vaccine hesitancy” when it turned out white people were the ones refusing.

@skinnylatte man there was this Muslim Burmese place by my old apartment in mar vista that was SO GOOD. ugh I miss LA food.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@skinnylatte seriously. And there used to be a tamale lady in my neighborhood. She always came by at like 830am on Saturday and I would jump my ass out of bed for her 😂😂 they were so good

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@skinnylatte it may be rose colored glasses but I feel like we used to have so many more interesting and adventurous food options. And now so much has gotten really conservative and one note. Seems like that’s the only way to survive.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@skinnylatte yea I think that’s 100% it. I left sf for New York in 2006 right before tech really got its claws in. Came back in 2012 and it was a real WTF moment on the food front. I mean it’s also probably why all the interesting food left is in the TL.

If you think that Biden isn't harm reduction from Trump, I don't even know what to say.

I don't like the man, and I have more reasons to dislike him than most, he wasn't even in my top 5 in the last election.

But the difference between him and Trump is night and day

"It's just cryptofascism" no, no it isn't, but even to the degree it were, the amount of damage that Trump can do is orders of magnitude higher and claiming these are identical is accelerationist at best and genocidal at worst

Barack Obama.

tess, to random
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

I think consistently referring to counter-protestors as "zionists" is probably misleading; I suspect that while there may be many genuine zionists doing violence to pro-Palestine protestors, there are also probably a bunch of fascists mixed in there who are very much not "zionists" in the traditional sense (other than perhaps that Israel's continued existence provides a potential avenue to ethnically cleanse the US of Jews).

Using that broad brush actually plays into the fascists' agenda.

Why do so many Democrats think that, as important as abortion rights are, it is ok to support Democratic warmongers who literally are responsible for killing women and children in other countries because of abortion?

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@rchusid i believe you. He also:

  • made the largest investments in climate ever
  • managed a hugely successful vaccination campaign
  • supports trans and women’s rights (eg PUMP act)
  • forgave student debt
  • appointed a strongly anti-monopoly head to the ftc who just got rid of non competes and restored net neutrality
  • made it legal for Medicaid to negotiate prices
  • instituted a minimum corporate tax

These may not impress you, but they are meaningful. Meanwhile…

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@rchusid Trump has the Supreme Court basically declaring himself a king. He refused to leave once, why wouldn’t he be better at it a second time?

He wants to dismantle all environmental regulations. The climate doom we enter without aggressive action in the next 5 years is horrifying, much less what will happen if we move backwards.

He wants a national abortion ban. More pregnant people dying and being disabled. Think they’ll honor the filibuster to avoid that? I wouldn’t bet my life on it.
