Today I made mental plans for the day when Clarence Thomas takes his inevitable dirt nap:

I'm taking a personal day and spending it drinking rosaaaaay and buying rounds for errrrrbody.

You should do a threat model for how much you are gonna piss off your former employees when you do a layoff.

"Google has accidentally collected childrens’ voice data, leaked the trips and home addresses of car pool users, and made YouTube recommendations based on users’ deleted watch history, among thousands of other employee-reported privacy incidents, according to a copy of an internal Google database which tracks six years worth of potential privacy and security issues obtained by 404 Media."

Has a book from your childhood ever had a chokehold on your imagination, and it won't let go?

It was a collection of the most exquisitely illustrated fairy tales. And these fairy tales went beyond Cinderella or Red Riding Hood. They were bizarre, dark tales like Donkey-Skin. (You need to read this, watch the Frendh 1970 movie, and absorb the wildness.) Or Ricky of the Tuft.

I loved this book. I would wake up early on Saturday mornings to huddle with it in bed, read my favorite stories, and look at all the intricate illustrations.

And then, one day, I came home after school and discovered my parents had cleaned out my books and given them to some kids in the church.

I still can't talk about the betrayal I felt.

I found this book today. Because I saw an illustrated page on Pinterest.

Being a grown-ass adult means you get to heal your inner child with a credit card and get back the book your parents gave away to some Other kid who didn't even want the thing.

The book:
My World of Fairy Tales: Stories from Grimm, Perrault, and Andersen Retold by Jane Carruth. Rand McNally, 1976.

It was a Christmas gift.
And my parents took it and gave it away - for charity.

Yeah, I'm still bitter.
That shit hurt my feelings.

The hidden circle of hell even Dante was too horrified to share:

Spending eternity writing scripts for lawyers who ignore your time limits and add thousands of words to a speech that should be three minutes long.

I want to hurl every lawyer (especially those with Dickensian vocabulary) into the nearest gas planet.

It may sound/look like I spend a lot of time thinking about the Wrongs of Men, but I really spend more time thinking about the ways that the cishet women around me swallow patriarchy's brainwashing so easily.

That weird woman/tree meme touches on something. Some of us are uncomfortable when the men in our lives share some vulnerability. There was one time an ex quietly mentioned he'd had a time when his consent wasn't respected.

And I was immediately uncomfortable. My gut reaction was to reject what was going to come out of his mouth. And I could tell he was bracing for it.

Instead, I said, I'm sorry that happened. Everyone should have their boundaries respected and she didn't respect yours. Do you want to talk about it?

He didn't. We never talked about it again. From then on, I've been a lot more accepting and empathetic when the men in my life come to me with stories of trauma. The same way I'd be if one of my girlfriends shared their assault story with me.

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

The narratives the women in my family carry are just as damaging as those carried by the men -- and these aren't gender-specific but they come from patriarchy:

Suffering is to be done in silence.
Emotional vulnerability is weakness.
Self sacrifice for the family.
Respect the hierarchy.

I see these narratives sneak out in conversations with my sister, my dad, about our family history.

Deconstructing or unpacking these veils of untruth can only benefit everyone.

The new "response" to "bear or man?" is so stupid, I can't even figure out what these guys are thinking, or what "point" they think they're making. (And why a tree?! 🤣)

Like, are they really trying to equate sharing their feelings with getting mauled by a bear? Or with what women are justifiably afraid men might do to them in the woods?

"Would you rather open up to a woman or a tree?" says way more about the men themselves than women, trees, or anything else. #ManVsBear #ManOrBear #BearOrMan

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

@kagan

What strikes me about their weird meme is how circular and hopeless it is.

Ok, Man in the Woods won't choose the woman to be vulnerable to because he thinks she's going to reject him for not being manly. Result: he bottles his feelings which remain unresolved.

OR, Man in the Woods chooses the tree, an inanimate object that can't respond to his sharing. Result: he vented a little, but ultimately his feelings remain invalidated and unacknowledged. And unresolved.

OR, the Man in the Woods chooses the woman. She listens and suggests he seek help from a professional, but he rejects it and never shares again. Result: He stews in his feelings and gets angrier. And his feelings remain unresolved.

How are any of these results helpful to the Man in the Woods?

That's as sophisticated as I can muster right now.

They've basically been treating Gaza like a mousetrap, baiting and bombing Palestinians while saying, They just need to find the way out! It's right there! And there! Or there!

It's horrible and indefensible.

I'm not gonna jump in on that thread about 'all men' but I am gonna say this:

While it's true that not all men do X, it is absolutely more true that patriarchy socializes ALL MEN to accept or be blind to certain truths about their position, importance, and relevance in the world.

Almost everything all men think of as 'natural' about their status in the world is not, in fact, true.
It was crafted through oppression, suppression, and violence.

It is also true that it takes an enormous amount of deliberate de-conditioning to throw off patriarchal thinking and praxis.

Those for whom 'not all men' truly apply (which is a small enough number to be sad and pitiful) know this to be true.

And so do the rest of us.

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

And, just to be clear, when I say ALL MEN, I mean all men.

Even the men from my community.

Just because you're Black doesn't mean you're not implicated in patriarchyyyyyy's bullshiiiiiiiit!

Louisiana’s new bill, once signed, would reclassify two #abortion pills (mifepristone and misoprostol) as Schedule IV controlled substances, like valium, and making it a crime to possess them without a valid in-state prescription.

Surgical and medication abortions are already banned in Louisiana, with few exceptions.

An obstetrician and a law professor explain more about the law and the lack of evidence supporting it:
https://theconversation.com/louisiana-set-to-reclassify-abortion-pills-as-controlled-dangerous-substances-heres-what-that-means-230848
#news #breakingnews #health

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

@TheConversationUS

What's interesting about this is that the bill was triggered by a horrific event experienced by a relative of the bill's sponsor: the relative's ex (or soon to be) was giving her abortion pills without her consent or knowledge.

Rather than deal with the ex's violation of the relative's consent, the bill's sponsor decided to go after the pills used.

Reclassifying these pills as controlled substances is a lazy way to address the problematic act of a man to induce an abortion against a woman's will.

It's seriously illogical -- but opportunistic.

Last night, before bed, I texted Bestie.

Me: I really wish every terrible man on this planet would explode.

Her: Seriously.

Me: I want them to burst like a blood blister. Just splatter everyone around them where they stand.

Her: That's your emotional state right now?

Me: Pretty much. It sucks that God won't listen to me.

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

I'm terrible, right?

I watched a podcast last night where a researcher dude said that incels are a real problem, and in his field, they have a term for it: The Lonely Young Man problem.

He said that in the past, Lonely Young Men would just go into areas where their angry loneliness wasn't so much a threat to society, like monasteries, quests, the military, or exploration.

Let's send them to space. For really long periods of time. Colonize Jupiter, my dudes. Figure it out. Have podcasts on Saturn's rings.

I mean, at least be useful, if not desirable.

Chart some stars; test the atmosphere; plant space corn or something. Listen to the sound of the spheres and write some reports on it.

Stop complaining that no one wants your eggplant, and channel that energy into discovering a space dust molecule or something.
