So one of my first conference trips after focusing my research on software teams, I'd worked really hard & shared innovative science in a talk that was widely acclaimed. But what I remember most is I was crossing the street with a bunch of men in tech and a car pulled up on us really close to me and I jumped and they all laughed and mocked me for the next block and said it revealed my "real personality"

Anyway that DID perfectly describe every day as a queer woman in tech 10/10 no notes

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a relationship?

Mine might sound kind of dark in relation to the question, but here goes:

People change, and they should, it's part of being a person. Some people are lucky, and they change in the same direction, but some don't, and that's okay too. There's no shame in leaving a relationship or changing the nature of a relationship that no longer serves you. We are all taught that every relationship, whether romantic or friendship, is supposed to last forever, but nothing is forever, and forcing something that no longer works, just ends in anger and bitterness. Knowing when to let go is as important as knowing when to hold on through a rough patch, and how to know either of those things is the most clichรฉ advice of all, COMMUNICATE.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@RickiTarr what Iโ€™ve learned from watching my queer parents:

Conventional relationship rules can be a useful shorthand, but they can also be oppressive and constricting. If your relationship thrives when you live apart or whatever thing conventional wisdom says spells doom: do that thing. Thereโ€™s no relationship police.

Random but: just before I got really ill I did a cool research project with my consultancy Catharsis about mid career women in tech using sudden pandemic WFH (along and despite its adversities) to advocate for being seen differently or to get chances that were denied when they were in person. Qualitative interviews with really cool stories about strategy in these moments. Then obviously I got crushed by illness so the data is just sitting on my shelf.

I should find the time to write it up ๐Ÿฅฐ

Is Trump ahead in the polls, because Biden is losing support amongst one of his key demographics: Black men? Or are the polls all a lie?

Trump ahead in polls?
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/13/us/politics/biden-trump-battleground-poll.html

Biden camp doesn't believe the polls?
https://www.axios.com/2024/05/14/biden-polls-denial-trump-2024-election

Either way, the most important thing to do, is to ignore, insult, argue with, and generally disrespect, Black men online! ๐Ÿคก Find a Black man, and yell "Trump is worse!" in his face as hard as you can! Swear at him, and threaten him with violence!

1/N

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke man online conversations are so strange. Itโ€™s like jumping in to talk when youre only hearing one side of a phone call.

Cause of course my brain says โ€œI AM trying to work on the structural things, but thatโ€™s invisible and slow. In the meantime, I really hope hypothetical lady in the bar doesnโ€™t bring home the guy whoโ€™s gonna condemn me to death by sepsis.โ€

But I didnโ€™t hear the scolding that likely prompted this post. So my response is likely out of context and driven by fear.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke I will say, there is an aspect to this discussion that irks me. And again it may just be lack of context. But I feel like there is a temptation to say โ€œif Trump wins itโ€™s not MY fault. Itโ€™s [blank]โ€™s fault!โ€ And I think those with the most privilege bear the most responsibility, BUT I think if Trump is elected it is all of our faults, especially if we are not actively taking steps to avoid it.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke

We owe each other, all of us: immigrants, women, trans kids, on and on. No one should feel absolved from effort. Thatโ€™s not to say anyone is responsible for saving the rest of us, particularly not Black or other excluded groups. But we all have agency and responsibility. No one can sit on their hands and then feel blameless when the consequences hit us.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke I donโ€™t think we are under any obligation to yell at each other. But I do feel a strong sense of obligation to the people who will be brutalized under Trump to do my best to keep him from being elected. Maybe that obligation extends only to my own vote. Or certainly in my case to trying to convince other white people not to give him their vote. But I know that if I donโ€™t do everything I can, the first time I read about a baby at the border torn from its mothers arms, thatโ€™s on me.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke no I havenโ€™t done everything I can on either of those. Or everything I can on climate. Or Gaza. Or mass incarceration. Or trans rights. Or abortion. No one can do everything they can on everything they care about. We do what we are able to, yes all the time, not just voting. And we hold ourselves accountable when we fall short. Itโ€™s my task as much as anyoneโ€™s to address these things. I donโ€™t think anyone can just say they donโ€™t have to work on them.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke but I do get the feeling of like โ€œIโ€™m sick of carrying this shit, to my great detriment and your great benefit. You pick it up for once!โ€

Certainly thatโ€™s true. Itโ€™s my task to pick it up and carry much more than people like me have done historically. And convince my compatriots to do the same.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke sorry for mulling in your thread. I think what gets me in these discussions is the number of people (esp white people) who take this to mean that they get to put what little they were carrying down too and feel self satisfied about it.

Which obviously is not what you were saying.

RickiTarr, to random

I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@RickiTarr my kids arenโ€™t white and I really donโ€™t think Iโ€™m gonna put books like this anywhere near them until theyโ€™re much older and hopefully have had time to internalize just how frickin awesome they are.

I donโ€™t know how I feel about their white compatriots reading these books with proper context

If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...

Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.

Jackiemauro,

@mekkaokereke @cshlan I mean just to be fair 1) Trump promises even more tariffs (https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2024/03/18/politics/donald-trump-tariffs-trade-war) and 2) the IRA does funnel a ton of money towards battery manufacturing and subsidizes the purchase of evโ€™s.

This is not me trying to say Biden is great, just adding context

"Randomized trials cannot address all causal questions of importance in medicine and health policy and may have limited generalizability; thus, investigators may need to use observational studies as a source of evidence to address causal questions. The challenge, then, is to balance the importance of addressing the causal questions for which observational studies are needed with caution regarding the reliance on strong assumptions to support causal conclusions."

A challenge of our time truly

Listen, you can get as mad as you want. You can call Black folk criticizing Biden "Bitching" if you want. We're still going to do it.

The CDC under Biden dropped the Covid isolation period from "5 days" to "vibes days." Not Trump.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke i donโ€™t think Biden is beyond criticism by any means. But I do think his Covid response was better.

We canโ€™t forget that Trump just fully failed on all fronts. He put kushner in charge for gods sake. Just comparing the length of recommended isolation is not a good metric.

Biden managed to get multiple rounds of vaccine to any American who wanted it. Free. In a local pharmacy. And mailed everyone free tests.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@mekkaokereke boy we heard a lot less about โ€œvaccine hesitancyโ€ when it turned out white people were the ones refusing.
