@davidaugust I mean also what in the recent past makes people think the gop ever intends to apply the same rules to the dems as they do themselves???

@davidaugust
And many companies and wealthy people also welcome this prospect.
With the promise of no more elections for the next few years (or even 100 years), the Nazis could collect a lot of money from German industrialists in the 1930s.

@davidaugust 2025 is not a random date

davidaugust,
@davidaugust@mastodon.online avatar

@Kierkegaanks did Mussolini have a comparable document?

mckra1g,
@mckra1g@mastodon.social avatar

@davidaugust precisely. These are the same voters who would exclaim, “I say, old boy: installing a fascist dictator and steamrolling over my rights wouldn’t be very sporting!”

These are they who still think the GOP is playing by a rulebook that (quite frankly) never existed.

davidaugust,
@davidaugust@mastodon.online avatar

@mckra1g well observed. And that quote is funny, except that it seems to be happening too much in real life.

@davidaugust @RVLara23 One-party rule never lasts. It just sucks donkeys for everyone else ‘til it finally crashes back to earth.

davidaugust,
@davidaugust@mastodon.online avatar

@mjf_pro @RVLara23 and in the meantime can be deeply destructive. Russia is entering its 3rd decade of it.

@davidaugust @RVLara23 I had hopes in the 90s for growing freedom in the former Soviet bloc but Yeltsin wasn’t the guy.

@mjf_pro @RVLara23 it did seem there was a moment where they could have gone differently. Sadly, it did not go that way.

@mjf_pro @davidaugust @RVLara23 China, Cuba, and the DPRK would like to point out they are still here.

Asariel999,

@davidaugust For better or worse, both parties would become extinct if the people feel they are not represented. This is NOT a monarchy.

@davidaugust@mastodon.online avatar

@Asariel999 That's not how this will work. When democracies collapse into autocracy, the consent of the people no longer makes much of a difference.

Put another way: just because the United States is not a monarchy does not mean that it will not become a de-facto single-party autocratic dictatorship.

Asariel - just keep believing that if you want to live under a Christian National Republic (like the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) for the rest of your life. The Handmaid's Tale will become the way of life for women in this country. My wife had to get me to sign for her first credit card, which didn't really surprise us because he dad would have had to sign for her if she hadn't been married. Is that how you want your world to be? Americans need to face reality
