The dwarven city cross section map is finally finished. A geological survey focused on rock types feels a likely product of an underground society. As a result I’ve made the strata and faults of the rocks the most vibrant and detailed part of the map, leaving the tunnels and buildings as mostly negative space. I’m super pleased with how it turned out. Map will be on sale as an art print soon. #ttrpg#gamemap#gamemaps#mapmaker#mapmakers#cartography#cartographer#cavecity
The epic linguistic map came up in conversation at work today, so today is one of those days to regularly to pause and spend some time admiring this map of North American English dialects by Rick Aschmann:
In my spare time I like to browse the vast #NASA image archives to create #3D models and #animations like this one.
Back on #birdapp I really enjoyed connecting with engineers and scientists from around the world. I hope we can build an even better community over here!
#map (1/2) The Marshall Island stick chart are not "maps" in the European sense of the word. Here, there's no question of "realism" of representation; the visualization of space is purely subjective, and the data represented focuses solely on the refraction, reflection and diffraction of a swell, which are presented by curved sticks, while horizontal and vertical sticks serve as support. Islands are symbolized by shells. Wave crests may also be present.
Fun labelling of the rock strata, which as a happy accident forms an attractive border at the bottom. I’m now done with linework; I want to experiment with some colour, I’m thinking of a watercolour esq wash, emulating the style of printed maps hand coloured. #cartography#ttrpg#worldbuilder
Another colour variation for the dwarf mountain map. I think I’ve finally cracked doing distressed old print text look on the iPad, I’ll do a tutorial soon, but for now I’m super pleased with the look of the text. I’ve got different versions of this map for purchase on my Etsy store, link on my website. #mapping#dndart#dndcartography#cartography#cartographer#rpg#dnd#roleplaying#fantasy#townmap#ttrpg
From the late 1670's comes a great "strip" map by John Ogilby. Here, to get from Presteigne to Carmathen, in Wales it's a practical method to keep one on the correct route to a destination, reference landmarks & stay on the route.
It's interesting that when automobiles became popular, early roads atlases used this same route method to get drivers to their next destination, by identifying landmarks and keeping them on a solitary path.
Today I learned about Null Island and it's cool and weird: an island that only exists on paper, but which has a real-world purpose. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Null_Island.) Did you know about this?
