The epic linguistic map came up in conversation at work today, so today is one of those days to regularly to pause and spend some time admiring this map of North American English dialects by Rick Aschmann:
I've been playing with #OpenStreetMaps via #osmnx, which is awesome , but I struggle with simple stuff like adding a bunch of places as markers. Everything looks a bit like the owl drawing meme, either showing something too easy and useless, or something too advanced and also useless or beyond my comprehension. Maybe some other Python tools?
(I know about Marcelo's fabulous PrettyMaps but it is not exactly a viz tool)
Cool map showing the date of the most recent total eclipse for every point in Indiana. Made by the Holcomb Observatory & Planetarium at Butler University.
Great concept, and I'm wondering if anyone has seen a similar map for a larger area, ideally an interactive map for the entire world where you can see the year of the last eclipse wherever you are. The data is available, so surely someone has made such a map?
Attention friends of Stamen’s Watercolor, Toner and Terrain map styles! We've provided these custom-designed #OpenStreetMap basemaps since 2011, and now we're partnering with @stadiamaps to host new and improved versions of these maps on their modern infrastructure. This new service will require a Stadia account for access, and comes with a generous free tier for non-commercial use. The old links will keep working until October 31. It turns out that it is not so easy to make a reasonably reliable list of exoplanets orbiting nearby stars. This thread looks at why and possible solutions.
The dwarven city cross section map is finally finished. A geological survey focused on rock types feels a likely product of an underground society. As a result I’ve made the strata and faults of the rocks the most vibrant and detailed part of the map, leaving the tunnels and buildings as mostly negative space. I’m super pleased with how it turned out. Map will be on sale as an art print soon. #ttrpg#gamemap#gamemaps#mapmaker#mapmakers#cartography#cartographer#cavecity
For the next 2.5 hours I'm doing mindless work; so I'm holding "Office Hours" (here & on Twitter). Feel free to reply here with questions about Illustrator, static map design, typography, projections, etc. and I'll see if I can offer some tips (not guaranteed to be useful). #MapOfficeHours#cartography

This profile from @librarycongress notes that he was seen as a failure in his lifetime, and that, although he is today venerated and best known as the philosopher of nature and the simple life, as well as a civil libertarian, he was also much more.
Did you know of his interest and expertise in #maps and #cartography?
