I'm feeling pretty good right now. We had an ultra-successful test run of failing all of our instances from the LAX LZ to the OR AZ in AWS. TBH, I just want to be done with all of this because next week we're having a cool onsite, and after that, there's lots of cool work to be done.

I guess my scripts for our migration might be something of a hit. We'll see how they fare with 50-ish failover clusters here in a bit, but the tests with 10 or so were smooth as silk twice earlier today. I know this doesn't sound complicated — it's just failovers amirite? — but there are stumbling blocks that have to be accounted for including network latency, SIOS mirroring, Windows pending reboots, AD, DNS...y'know all of the usual wrenches getting thrown in the gears.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

Oh and the target is for all of it to be done within 20 minutes. With the real deal including all 70+ failover clusters at once.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

I forgot to mention these are four-node failover clusters using SQL Server Standard Edition which isn't supposed to be possible but we did it. So we're in the wind for support from Microsoft. With two nodes in one AZ and two in another, and three SIOS mirrors replicating between pairs of nodes.

@valthonis Test run was a resounding success. Next week we have an offsite in L.A., then coasting to the real deal in June. Then with that feather in our caps moving on to more cool projects.

Tomorrow at work is a test run for the migration from a local zone to its parent AZ, where we'll land back where we started until the real deal in June. I'm not worried about it, our SQL failover clusters are solid. I just want to be done with it. I'm looking forward to our offsite next week.

"Whether we wanted it or not, we've stepped into the middle of a war with the groundhog in the backyard... So lets get to taking out their command, one by one.” - Me, this afternoon, in my best Zavala voice after the spouse showed me video of a groundhog ransacking the garden.

@valthonis Once, a cat I had pissed off a gopher in the backyard and the gopher chased the cat into the apartment. I used a broom to try to get it out and it latched onto the bristles of the broom, so I carried the whole thing outside and just dropped the broom.

I gotta admit that I'm disappointed to hear that Dire Wolf Digital will be supporting their board games at and not the or . It seems like a wasted opportunity.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon I don't know. There's supposedly stuff in the pipeline. I'd say Cortex does not seem like a priority, and they're not allocating resources to developing the line — far less than Fandom did, at least when Fandom was putting money, energy, and people into it. Being at GenCon and not hosting any Cortex or ToX events is a signal of some kind.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@targrus On one hand, it's keeping Cam Banks employed which is definitely something I can get behind.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@MikeFerdinando The license didn't kill enthusiasm, or at least for those it did that's misplaced. People made a lot more hay out of that than was warranted.

Fandom dropping all support for Cortex months before the sale to DWD is what did the most damage, and DWD continuing radio silence for more than a year is just continuing to do so.

Fuuuck. The airline changed my connecting flight coming home from Indy in August from being at a good time to departing 8 hours before my first flight arrives. I booked everything though Hopper and luckily got the missed connection insurance, because getting hold of anyone at the airline is impossible. I may just have to fly on the day, invoke the missed connection guarantee, and get a new flight booked then. But it's stressful as hell. Luckily it's coming home and not going, maybe?

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@Da_Gut It is. It makes zero sense. I guess maybe there's a chance they'll reschedule it back? I'm not holding my breath.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

Frontier fixed it and rebooked me on a flight that arrives a little later and has a stop, but it was free.

Some more #CruelWorld2024 thoughts:

Gary Numan was really good. He played the entirety of The Pleasure Principle, which was great because a lot of his newer stuff I frankly find tedious. He brought his 3 teen or young adult daughters on stage for one song, which felt a little forced.

Soft Cell was likewise great. Marc Almond had a performer onstage named Christeen who was...interesting. Kind of like Genesis P'orridge. My step daughter was kind of weirded out by it.

last night at was fantastic. But I've come to the conclusion that Simon Le Bon is beginning to look more and more like Malcolm McDowell.

This is an example of how Ministry reworked the early stuff. Also: backup singers, and an electric violin and cello:

@Tim_Eagon Al Jourgensen was basically forced to make the first album, With Sympathy, the way that the record company wanted. He's hated the album for years and both it and Twitch haven't been played live since 1984 and 1987 respectively. This is literally the first time anyone has heard these songs played live in 40 years.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon It was completely not what I was expecting. I think I was expecting him to just play the songs the way the crowd would be expecting and basically phone it in.

Duran Duran changed up their show too and it was great. Granted the last time I saw them was over 30 years ago...

I'll have some more thoughts on #CruelWorld2024 later, but for now I have to say that Ministry's performance of songs from With Sympathy and Twitch was inspired as fuck. It wasn't just a regurgitation of the songs. Jourgensen owned the performances and brought them up to his current standards.

My step daughter got her hair pretty big getting ready for #CruelWorld24. Reminds of the time that a friend of mine who had really tightly curled hair let another friend spend hours picking it out. The result was an afro like two feet around. He couldn't get it back down for a week.

Though I've been drifting away from for a while now, it's still feels really weird to be completely uninterested in the latest releases. I mean, not even a twinge of FOMO.

@Da_Gut @bedirthan @Tim_Eagon @dragoncrown It's also that even aside from "advancement", the start of the game shouldn't set the character in stone. You should be able to change things on your character sheet that don't boil down to advancement, as your character evolves and changes. I'm very much for, "I'm not going to decide [trait] now, I want to give this character some time to settle".

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@Da_Gut @bedirthan @Tim_Eagon @dragoncrown A great example of this are relationship and value statements in Cortex games. They're brief phrases that define the trait. You can question those statements, getting additional dice for a roll, but have to reduce the trait after. When you get to downtime/growth/whatever, you have a choice to make. Rewrite the statement and restore the trait rating, or leave the statement and the reduced trait (typically in exchange for increasing another one).
