Pro Tip: If you're going to make a book, game, or any kind of product, the bare minimum you should do is a Google search for the name to make sure there isn't already a product called that. It doesn't necessarily mean you can't also have that name (if it's not TMed) but you should at least be aware of possible issues. (And really, this is so basic it doesn't seem like it's even a tip for pros)

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@montecook cf the Tribe 8 rpg. We tried to tell them when they revealed the name that it was the name of a dyke punk band—and that name was an alliteration to scissoring—but at that point, it was too late to change it.

So freaking annoying. Somewhere along the way, a reminder box showing what playbooks to type in stopped working. I couldn't get it to work again without breaking things I had added (it's important to know I don't know what I'm doing exactly). So I got the bright idea of making it a clickable icon that reveals it, like the sheet settings. The hiding and showing part works but I can't get the text actually appear (again, I don't know what I'm doing).

.sheet-header .sheet-text { color: black; text-align: justify; padding: 3px 0 2px; line-height: 13px; }
.sheet-playbook .sheet-reminder { position: absolute; border: 1px solid ; background: white; top: 48px; z-index: 3; border-radius: 5px; width: 267px; font-size: 12px; text-align: center; padding: 3px; }

It might be relevant that the data-i18n thing is a Roll20 thing. Since it's running within their character sheet container or whatever there are limitations on what can be done with .css/HTML/Javascript. But this seems like something very straightforward.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@carpedavid Those are there. This something whacky. I might whack at it in the console until I find something that appears.

image/png

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@carpedavid I did it. It's not perfect but I can tweak from there:

<div class="setting-char label">
<label>
<span class="top-holder" data-i18n="autofill_reminder_playbook"> </span><br /><span class="top-holder" data-i18n="list_playbooks"></span>
</label
</div>
</div>```

My son got an electronic drum set for his birthday. It doesn't have a speaker so for now he needs to plug in headphones to hear it. My wife said we should get a speaker or a monitor for it.

Looking back at how mostly-read-only reflective optical media kinda interposed themselves between the rewritable cassette tape past and the rewritable flash storage future, it really feels like a technological anomaly rather than the huge innovation it was touted as in the 90s and 00s.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@valthonis They were so prevalent. Unlike cassettes, we had hundreds of the damn things. We'd buy spindles and spindles of them. Now I don't own a single one. If I need portable storage I have a few assorted thumb drives in my desk drawer.

Electronics Guys: Be sure to take into account the internal resistance of your batteries!

Me: Is there an empirical chart? Because you can't measure that with a multimeter.

Electronics Guys: It's important!

... just got off a call with the head of IT Security for a client. Not a small client, either. Main Security guy, head of Security, in charge of all IT Security initiatives, that guy.

I just explained the concept of a timestamp server irt code-signing certificates (the code-signing certificates that this guy is, indeed, spearheading the deployment of in the enterprise).

First time he'd ever heard of the concept. Just a mind-blowing concept to him.

@UncivilizedDan I once had a call with the head of IT for a school district (in FL, natch). They had no idea what an FTP server was. At the same time, I guess they were really good at filling out funding proposals and whatnot and had bunch of server hardware sitting in the district warehouse that they had no idea or plan for what to do with it.

wow, this is not a problem I run into that often: the game I want to reverse engineer is, in fact, easy to dig into, with lots of easily decompiled classes!

except I can't read any of them, because they're named in Finnish.

@foone I once administered SQL Server databases for an app that was originally written in Swedish. So it had gems like Slutdatum, Slutid, and Programkanal.

Power outage. Can’t check the BGE site because the outage tracker requires your account number or the associated phone number, neither of which I am going to find in an abruptly dark house.

Good thing it’s not anything important.

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

@rdonoghue The last two times we've lost power, one was a car running into the substation around the corner and the other one was somebody shooting at another substation. And to think one of the reasons we were happy to move to WA is because of PG&E in CA shutting off the power during wildfire season.

My dream VTT would allow uploading PDFs (or images) of sheets and allow defining the fields to be filled in, assigning them to die rolls, etc. Why has nobody done this yet?

#VTT #TTRPG

rivetgeek,
@rivetgeek@dice.camp avatar

For reference, I used to work for an educational testing company. We allowed for teachers to design their own assessments. They could upload existing paper tests and define the fields for when the tests were scanned and OCR'd. So I know it can be done (obviously a VTT doesn't need the OCR part, I'm talking about the field definitions).

Lord, I don't know what I would have done when Amanda got sick (and endured several surgeries + chemo etc.) if I wasn't working from home.

"Oh, see? You weren't working! You should have claimed family sick time for all those days!"

No, you don't get it. I burned all my family sick leave almost immediately and went to using vacation time for days I need to take her to doctors and hospitals.
