NASA chose the SpaceX Starship as its lander for the upcoming Artemis III mission, meaning its astronauts will be perched over 100 meters above the lunar surface when they land. To solve this problem, SpaceX is developing an elevator that will carry the astronauts to and from the lunar surface. A team of NASA astronauts recently tested out the system, riding a prototype elevator developed by SpaceX that simulates an excursion to the surface of the Moon.

Mr. David's concept is a more efficient version of the old "reaction control system on a long lever arm" found in the Babylon 5 Starfuries.

The Compton–Belkovich Thorium Anomaly is a volcano on the far side of the Moon. It was found by a gamma-ray spectrometer and is an area of concentrated thorium. Thorium-232 is not reactor fuel, but neutrons converts it into uranium-233 which is.

The thorium concentration reaches 5.3 µg/g while the surrounding basalts only contain between 0 and 2 µg/g. Compared to the Earth's thorium concentration of 0.06 µg/g, this is very high.

That spacecraft is one of the few designs that is both a tail-sitter and a belly-lander. Usually they are one or the other.

we are house-sitting for the in-laws, and they have amazon prime logged in on their TV. finally trying out ! watched ep1 last night and excited to get through more of it this weekend.

i might be able to get the account password from mother-in-law, but i really don’t want to get my own subscription or support amazon in general… is there another way to watch without uh, sailing the seven seas?

Irritatingly, all foreseeable rocket engines are low thrust/high Isp ("high gear"), or high thrust/low Isp ("low gear").

Scifi fans could really use a medium thrust/medium Isp engine, but there doesn't seem to be any.

I bought a copy of the new Star Trek Adventures: Captain's Log solo RPG and now I'm making my own personal use "realistic" Federation before I play it. I mean, what else am I going to do on a Friday night, go out and meet people?

(Based on @nyrath 's Near-Space-to-30-LY map, thanks very much)

I am still fiddling with a simplistic 13 empire approximated by the vertices of a cuboctahedron. Simplistic 100 ly radius bounding sphere, each empire sphere 33.3 radius.

Each systen is connected to 2 closest neighbors. Systems that are ±20% of being equidistance from the nearest two empire centers are the neutral zone (white). Rest of systems belong to closest empire center.

Yes, FTL that cannot be used in a strong gravity gradient is fairly standard.

My empires are starting out as spheres so the stars can be roughly sorted automatically by the Python script. Because the dataset had 2,600 freaking stars. The idea was after the script did the grunt work, I could manually tweak the map to make it more interesting. Then trying to automate the tweaks.

Later I would try again with a bigger map.

Something that I am sure lots of writers and gamemasters have thought about:

How bad is it when you get bullet holes in your space ship?

If you can get to safety before pressure drops to 30 kPa, you will be fine. At that point, you might have a minute or two before you pass out.

I found this equation to calculate how long it takes for pressure to drop that far:

Time(s) = [30 * volume(m³)] / hole (cm²)

For a 9mm bullet hole in a 2x2x10 meter corridor, that gives you about 5 hours.
