First real hot day of the summer, here. I’ve been trying out the portable AC unit we got when we bought the house. (It’s a DeLonghi Pinguino) it cools about 700 sq ft. So far it’s kept the living room cool and the kitchen and bedrooms reasonably pleasant, though I’ve closed off the den. Right now, it’s something like 90 outside, and about 74 in the living room. I could get it cool by closing off the bedrooms, but then they’d be hot. Overall, for an affordable, portable unit, it works well.

Checked off "bought cheapest beer possible before 130pm and bicycled it home" on the bike tooter achivement list. #BikeTooter (Edit: just for clarity, these are for my slugs, I do have a driver's license and no DUI arrest, I do own a car, and I don't drink beer.)

@Neblib @ai6yr For getting drunk and drowning in. In my experience though, putting out beer to keep slugs out of my garden only brought more slugs. I found Sluggo kept them away better. Gonna have to fine a shop around here that carries it now that I’ve moved.

Had to take the day off to go to an appointment. Wasn’t sure how long it would take so I took the whole day off.

…the appointment ended up taking a half an hour.

Still, it took almost an hour to get to the place so 🤷🏻‍♀️

While I was out, I grabbed a few things from the store & swung by the Goodwill. I’ve been checking out second hand stores for a couple of weeks, trying to find a little lamp for the coffee table by my chair. It’s a really dark spot. But none of the little table lights I’ve found have had lamp shades! Today, however, the Goodwill had a small desk lam! The kind with a bendy neck and it’s just perfect & it was only $3!

I also found lace curtains for the bedroom & a mini bunt muffin tin!

@ElleGray Back in the Victorian era, women would use hat pins to defend themselves. I think I read somewhere that they were outlawed because of it.

@msquebanh When my brother was teaching ESL to international college students, he'd assign them an essay on Tiananmen Square. Most of the Chinese students had never heard of it and would call home to ask their folks if it happened, who of course said yes. When asked why they never talked about it, they were all scared.

@skinnylatte I don’t really measure much when I cook, I just go by what seems right, especially when I make soup. Baking, I measure the dry ingredients more or less, but if vanilla is involved, I add it the way Julia Childs would add sherry!

99.9% of jobs do not require urgency of any kind, really they don't. We've all had a boss who acts like someone will die if we don't hit some made up deadline by people who don't even do the job. No one needs their meal 1 minute faster or the paperwork before tomorrow morning. Your time off actually doesn't need to wait. Sometimes I think about how legitimately bad most businesses are at time management and hiring, and I wonder how they manage to exist at all.

@RickiTarr @chadlundgren THIS! I love everything about my housekeeping job except the unrealistic deadlines! Laundry takes as long as it takes, you can’t speed it up. And while beds take 15 minutes each, and bathrooms 20-25 minutes, the floor size makes a BIG difference in the clean time, not to mention the condition the guests leave the house in. But sure, tell me to go faster. That’ll make the towels dry faster for sure.

It occurred to me today that even though over 1 million Americans have died from Covid, we have no national memorial or national day day of mourning and how the powers that be have decided to memory hole the whole thing and how wrong this is.

@aardvark Indeed. Someone earlier in the thread suggested that each country have their day of mourning be on the the day the first person died of Covid in each country, but I wonder if having the same day for all might be more unifying.
