I am a proud father of two amazing children, I have a wonderful wife who is also a teacher. I love playing music, guitar mostly, but I like other stringed instruments. I love to make things with my hands and with machines controlled by my hands. I am worried about our children's future and feel that I most closely align with #anarchy

Found this Shriekback album “Oil & Gold” at a local record shop. Cost me C$5.00.

Contains the song “Nemesis”, which is awesome.

Will be hearing this as I go on a walk with my Walkman.

@atomicpoet pretty decent album, I picked up a used CD years ago from a shop in LA. Totally forgot about it, thanks for the nostalgia.

Also, what even is the purpose of a beard?

From what I can tell, the benefit is that it gives me the option for another face. If I want to be mildly unrecognizable, I can just grow out my facial hair.

But other than that, I have no idea why men grow beards.

numbercrow,
@numbercrow@techhub.social avatar

@atomicpoet I wear a beard as my default for a couple of reasons. 1) I'm lazy, so having to shave my face daily is something I'm not into, I can wear a beard and groom weekly instead. 2) having some hair under my chin hides the double chin that is so obvious when I shave.

So long as I look presentable, I give 0 shits whether people like it or not. My wife likes that it is less prickly than stubble so win-win.

I say, I can't understand why any man would want to shave everyday. What say you?

American journalists seem, overall, somewhat blase about the astonishing journalist death toll in Gaza. Yes, there's been coverage, but very little outrage from a craft that you'd expect to be screaming about this. Politics seems to be part of the reason.

But keep in mind that American journalists have been somewhat blase about the ongoing murders of reporters in Mexico' over the years.

Maybe US journalists can only be counted on to demand protection for themselves.

I just got a complaint about my #photography posts, which I concluded came from a troll, but perhaps I’m actually coming off in a way that rubs people the wrong way here.

The complaint was that by posting high resolution images and describing in detail the processes used to create them, I’m merely “showing off” in a way that isn’t useful to most people.

I indeed do rather niche photography, using relatively esoteric gear. I think some people are interested in process and enjoy the results.

SEGA started as an American company.

Nowadays, people associate SEGA as a very Japanese developer. And with games like Yakuza and Like a Dragon: Ishin, how could you not?

However, the hint that SEGA used to be an American company is in the name itself: SEGA stands for Service Games.

Who was the “Service” they were alluding to? The American military stationed in Japan after World War II.

SEGA’s first line of business was importing American slot machines to U.S. bases stationed in Japan. After awhile, they started manufacturing slot machines in Japan. Then they started making other coin-operated devices such as jukeboxes as well.

What’s more fascinating is that SEGA’s arcade game business actually predates video games. In 1966, they released Periscope, an electro-mechanical submarine shooting simulator. It was the first game of its kind.

Now you might think that, for all intents and purposes, SEGA became completely Japanese right after its founding. But this is not the case. For almost the first 50 years of its existence, it was run by Americans.

In 1969 – more than 2 decades after its founding – SEGA was sold to American conglomerate Gulf+Western. That’s right, the same Gulf+Western that owned MCA and Paramount Pictures.

Meanwhile, co-founder David Rosen continued to run SEGA as a CEO for what was then a Gulf+Western subsidiary.

During this time, SEGA released its first video game, Pong-tron, in 1973. For the next decade, they followed this up with such classics as Head On, Zaxxon, and Congo Bongo. They even developed and released SEGA’s first home console, the SG-1000.

However, in 1984, Gulf+Western was looking to divest itself of most subsidiaries. SEGA’s U.S. assets were then sold to Bally Manufacturing Corporation.

SEGA of Japan continued on, though. And the Japanese company still had a major American influence. You see, SEGA co-founder David Rosen wasn’t done with SEGA yet.

Along with fellow SEGA executive Hayao Nakayama, David Rosen then launched a management buyout of SEGA of Japan. They did this with the financial backing of CSK Corporation, a well-known Japanese software firm. With the buyout complete, Nakayama was installed as CEO of SEGA.

But Rosen’s story doesn’t end there. Now living in Los Angeles, David Rosen became the head of the newly established SEGA of America. He was key to the launch of both the Master System as well as the Genesis. Under his watch, SEGA of America became a well-respected video game developer. And until 1996, David Rosen remained a director of both SEGA of Japan as well as SEGA of America.

David Rosen is still alive. He’s 93-years-old.

Finally! It's ludicrous that we need to pay for a product to file and pay our taxes. This is a huge step in the right direction. @ben I believe the IRS knows , in general unless we are concealing assets, what we owe or do not owe, this charade is to benefit the wealthy and corporations. Me and my wife with one income each and a few investments and bank accounts is not hard to track or predict based on all of the information the federal government already has. Why don't they present us with a bill or credit based on what they already know? The vast majority can say, "eh, sounds about right" and move on. Those who dispute can provide documentation otherwise. I know this sounds simplistic, why does it have to be any different?

Yup, just got told to "get on your bike and go back to where you came from". My 5 year old daughter was on her bike in front of her (before the car arrived) and after waiting a bit the woman started driving her car towards her, then stopped to yell at my girl to move. When I said "Seriously, you can't wait for a child?" she unbuckled her seat belt and stepped out like she was going to throw down on me, then said she was yelling for her to move because she "didn't want to hit my child". #yegbike
