On this day in 1533, Italian anatomist Hieronymus Fabricius was born. In his work on foetal formation, he illustrated the uterus and vulva, somewhat idiosyncratically, and also illustrated the clitoris, fairly well.

From De formato foetu, 1604.

@vagina_museum it looks like a cross section of the vagina, made by someone who didn't entirely understand what a cross section is

mshaw,
@mshaw@eldritch.cafe avatar

@vagina_museum @CaptainJanegay re: the protruding sphincter thing, it looks to me like someone took a gynecological specimen that had been removed via autopsy, made a slit down the front side, spread it open and illustrated what they saw, in which case that would be the entrance to the urethra. Either that, or we're looking at the remains of a whale carcass that washed up with the tide.

I think the mistake a lot of people make with so-called AI is in assuming it's an innovation analogous to like, the internet or automobiles, when really a better point of comparison would be DDT or radium toothpaste

@resuna I was on the verge of pointing out that beanie babies were just toys, but I remember the 90's well enough to know how many people really didn't see it that way. Everyone knew someone who was convinced this was the only correct way to do... uh... finance

Something I'd like to see is a fantasy novel that, in addition to providing a map of all the locations the characters visit during the story, also contained recipes of the food they eat.

Look, should I continue this account here or not?

Here, most of the engagement, lately, is complaining about what I'm doing or not doing. Unlike what I experience on Twitter, BlueSky, Insta and Threads. And to the point of losing all pleasure.

Yes, I rarely post alt text because it's time-consuming, I have to manage 5 accounts and there aren't enough people on my Patreon for me to devote enough time to it.

Yes, sometimes I put links to Twitter because I've been on it for 5 years and...

mshaw,
@mshaw@eldritch.cafe avatar

@TheSpaceshipper hi, I don't know you but it sounds like you're looking for permission to stop doing something that isn't fun. Here is that permission. You should do it. Seriously, because it also sounds like you're viewing film criticism as a much higher-stakes game than it actually is. You're talking about "having to" endure a lot of negative treatment that you're in no way obligated to put up with, that there's no prize for putting up with, and that never seems to improve. I think there's a decent chance that it could actually do you a lot of good to step back for a while and watch life go on without all these self-imposed obligations that don't serve you. I know that "quitting" can feel bad for someone with a lot of drive and a lot to say (since that's me too) but really, who are you trying to impress? People who are just gonna yell at you anyway because that's what they're into for whatever reason?

kitoconnell, to queer

Apparently the "#queer is a slur" discourse is back on social media and look, y'all, we settled this in the 1990s. Get with the century. We have a right to reclaim these words and we already have. Get the fuck over it, and accept my queer as fuck self or get into some therapy.

mshaw,
@mshaw@eldritch.cafe avatar

@kitoconnell what drives me nuts is when people do the motte-and-bailey thing after being confronted about this and try to pretend like they clearly meant it as a matter of personal preference and they don't have a problem with other people trying to reclaim it for themselves. It's one of the odd moments I'm actually thankful for the format of online discussions, since it's usually possible to link their previous posts and go "look, here you are saying specifically that no one should try to reclaim it and you don't think anyone should use the word ever, even in reference to themselves specifically. If you're telling the truth now then please show me an example of someone telling you that you must reclaim the word and that you personally must be required to identify as queer, because I have never once seen anyone say this in any context."

If you need a gender neutral alternative to "ladies and gentlemen," I'd like to point out that "ladies and non-ladies" covers pretty much everything, and as a bonus it takes "default" status away from male gender

One of the stranger things about continuing to learn and grow and change as you get older is recognizing all the other adults who are frozen in a previous stage of your own development, like they reached a particular milestone somewhere and thought, "this is good, I'm done, I'll just be exactly like this for the rest of my life and never bother myself with the dirty trial and error of living again." Hard to explain what this actually looks like, other than "I often meet people significantly younger than me who appear to be 'set in their ways' as if they were significantly older, and I also meet people significantly older than me who act like children." It's different from meeting people who disagree with you, or who were just raised differently, but it's hard to say exactly how.

holyramenempire, to journalism

"Adding further insult to injury, the editorial board cites right-wing sociologist Brad Wilcox, who is set to publish yet another in a long list of books that treat compulsory heterosexual marriage as a panacea for all social ills. Wilcox has a shady history of ties to anti-gay advocacy. Disturbingly, he once argued that marriage prevents domestic violence. In reality, marriage just traps women in relationships with their abusers."

I am, despite everything, quite shocked to see WaPo doing this bullshittery. "We want the government to assign us enslaved white wives" is kind of a white, terminally online teenage boy thing to say, and they don't hire those.

mshaw,
@mshaw@eldritch.cafe avatar

@holyramenempire "why won't women date Trump voters" is such a tired angle, too. I'd be far more interested in the question of "why DO Trump voters want to date liberals, whom they supposedly hate with a violent passion?" but nobody writes about that.

mshaw,
@mshaw@eldritch.cafe avatar

@Sharksonaplane honestly, I wonder if it's even that complicated. MAGA bros love to complain about how persecuted they are, and they're doing it. If liberal women were willing to date them, they still wouldn't. They'd just find something else to whine about. They're already getting exactly what they want in this scenario, they don't need anything to change.

I have just found, on Amazon, a USB peripheral which is a gearshift for a manual transmission car

Challenge: What is the funniest way you could utilize this peripheral in software

@mcc map the positions on the gear shift to the home row keys, then remap the home row keys themselves to screen brightness up/down, sleep mode, on-screen keyboard toggle, and whatever other similarly annoying functions make sense for the OS you're using. You have to make sure it's in neutral when you shut down, or else it hard reboots instead.
