@mvario I wonder at what point mainstream Republicans start talking about forced marriage? All of the laws they've been making have simply made people who can get pregnant swear off of sex with forced-birthers.

I see it playing out right now, with posts lamenting that the genocidal and fascist can't get matches on dating sites anymore, or that women are asking them "Where were you on January 6, 2021?"

and yeah, that's a solid summary, to me.

"Divorce has become a hot topic among many red-state Republican lawmakers. Most recently, in January 2024, Oklahoma lawmaker Dusty Deevers proposed a bill to eliminate no-fault divorce and suggested 'public shaming' of spouses who commit marital fault and then divorce. Restricting no-fault divorce is also part of both the Texas and Nebraska Republican Party platforms, and was recently debated by Louisiana lawmakers."

Why are Americans fighting over no-fault divorce? Maybe they can’t agree what marriage is for:

Everytime Pi Day rolls around (har har), there's always comments about how Americans are weird for using the mm/dd/yyyy format for dates, while much of the rest of the world uses dd/mm/yyyy.

Hot take: both formats suck and should be replaced by the superior yyyy/mm/dd

holyramenempire,
@holyramenempire@kolektiva.social avatar

@malcircuit My hot take: multiple commonly accepted date formats give us more holidays to celebrate.

We could get away from our blood-soaked national holidays and celebrate stuff like "Pi Day" and "Mario Day" worldwide. I think "idk that's how some people write today's date" is a perfectly good reason to have a party!

The state has failed to add sexual orientation and identity to laws that bar discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations, despite more than 20 years of attempts by sympathetic legislators. IMO there is a special place in hell for trans people who try to talk other trans people out of transitioning.

If you feel this urge, for gosh sake figure out your real objection, and talk constructively about that, instead. Go talk to a friend who doesn't know any of the principal players, and let it out with them, instead, if you need to.

Get to a point where what you're going to say is only pure & helpful, or just stay silent. There are cis people lined up everywhere to be unsupportive; no one needs it from within their community.

As democracy remains under siege, it has been frustrating to watch how the press covers politics these days.

I am reminded by lessons that came to me during the Nixon years as a CBS News corresp:

When 1 side lies intentionally & repeatedly, they are no longer entitled to benefit of doubt. They should be held to account, right away. Do not simply repeat the narratives they spew

Hard to overstate how enshittified and botshitted Google Maps has become. Went looking for my local locksmith on Gmaps. Maps shows 20+ fake locksmith referral scam outlets and doesn't even register the real locksmith, despite it being fully visible in Street View.

Instead, a red pin on the shop identifies it as a fake locksmith scammer. The real locksmith - which has been there SINCE 1942 (!!) and is a verified merchant - doesn't even show up.

Google Maps, showing the storefront for Golden State Lock as an empty building.

Something I've noticed a lot lately, is that especially Boomer women, but honestly, women in general, don't seem to ask for what they want or need in a direct way. I notice this a lot with my Mom and her friends. Instead of just asking for what they need directly they tell a story, to ask in a roundabout way. For instance, my Mom needed help this morning, and Instead of just saying, "Hey, I dropped my remote, can you pick it up for me?" She tells a one minute story about what happened, no ask, and eventually I get the point, and then suggest that I come pick it up. Or if one of her friends wants to do something like have a birthday party for a friend, they don't say "We should have a party!" They say, It's Sarah's Birthday coming up, you know she likes surprises, what does everyone think we should do?"

I often wonder if this is why older people think younger women are rude and demanding, because younger people often just ask for what they want and need in a more direct way. But also it's probably just straight up sexism, because men are supposed to make decisions, and women are supposed to make suggestions.

What do you all think? Is this just me? Have you experienced something similar?

Yeah, I think this tracks! I watch a lot of true crime videos where an upper-class woman in the UK or US kills her husband, and then calls the cops very calmly, like "Some mysterious man killed my husband! One justice, please!"

It's just bizarro land to me, a person who would never call the cops at all, much less for a crime I committed. But they seem so self-assured that they're not at any risk, legal or physical.
