Pictures of women struggling against the Iran-theocracy's brutal sexist oppression, by simply having their hair as they want it while the regime's forces continue what they call project/operation "noor" (light), were shared via KJAR, the Free Women's Union of Rojhelat (Iran-held part of Kurdistan).

MSF highlights urgent need to care for patients with chronic kidney disease [in Guatemala]

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the main public health problems in Guatemala and is responsible for rising numbers of deaths. The disease – in which the kidneys do not work as well as they should, causing them to fail completely in extreme cases – is aggravated by other medical conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. In 2023, 12 new cases of renal failure were registered in Guatemala every day.

Patients in the advanced stages of CKD, whose kidneys are no longer functioning, require dialysis to filter unwanted substances and fluids from their blood. This can take the form of either hemodialysis (which uses an external machine to filter the blood, and generally takes place in dialysis centres) or peritoneal dialysis (which uses the lining of the abdomen as a filter and can be carried out at home).

In the three years since we opened the project in 2021, considerable progress has been made in tackling the disease and our project has impacted the lives of hundreds of people with CKD.

At least this time at the dentists' they had finally learned about my absurd local anesthetic "tolerance" (I still don't know why I have that), so they started by giving me 8 times more than the normal dose, without pausing to check "Maybe it's enough this time? Nope. Maybe now. No. [etc]" as they've always done in the past.

Then we had a 20 minute break for it to take effect, so the dentist left me with the nurse and I started rambling about the same topics I ramble to you about on here, dictators, war, war crimes, feminism, antifascism, etc. After like 10 minutes the nurse mentioned...
-I'm from Turkey. I don't like Erdoğan.
-Well, nobody should, for varying reasons.
-I'm a Kurd, Erdoğan doesn't like us...
So, then we had even more to talk about. :-)
Of course they're not supposed to talk about "politics", but somehow everywhere I go, new people I encounter quickly ignore such bans when talking with me. :-]

On the way home the paratransit driver mentioned being from Somalia, so we talked about the Tigray Genocide and war in Sudan (also banned from talking "politics").

Now, I'll try to sleep.

You should have some Chrome web browser installed, without changing any of the default setting, with all codecs and with Chrome Web Store support.

Noooo, not for everyday use of course, that would be stupid,
but for those rare times when it seems it MAY be some website-developer is too incompetent for their job so only designed it to work in Chrome or is incompatible with privacy-essential adblocking.
For those moments, to be able to perform the troubleshooting you specifically need the most commonly used web browser and it must be entirely unmodified in any way at all.
If the website in question doesn't work then, then it's not your fault (unless it's some firewall you have, maybe).
For this, you can pick the one most suitable for you here:
https://chromium.woolyss.com
If you're on Windows x86_64 I would recommend the "mini_installer.sync.exe" of whatever is the latest release at any particular time here:
https://github.com/Hibbiki/chromium-win64/releases

For everyday use of course Chrome isn't even an eligible candidate.
Firefox (or Brave with the cryptocoin-crap turned off) with uBlock Origin and Cookie AutoDelete is top option for everyday use, together with Mullvad Browser for the extra-privacy moments (like YouTube, Google/Bing-translate, price-search engines, etc) and with Tor Browser for the pseudonymity moments.

b9AcE,
@b9AcE@todon.eu avatar

Oh, also, every time you have used your Chrome-based troubleshooting-only browser, delete your entire profile-directory.
Then you can be sure Google and fellow violators can't keep any covert tracking bullshit against you and that everything remains 100% default settings.

@Tiempo In my experience (albeit awhile ago) and that I have perceived to be dominant amongst privacy/security people nowadays, Librewolf may be too cumbersome to use for regular folks especially compared to the amount gained over a quickly reconfigured Firefox or Brave at their current states.
Some people may of course have exceptional needs or priorities and that's fine. They would know what they're getting into and why, so I wouldn't need to tell them... anything. ;-)

MSF office and pharmacy in Rakhine state destroyed in fire amid ongoing violence

Medecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is deeply alarmed that our office and pharmacy in Buthidaung, Rakhine state, Myanmar, burnt down on 15 April. The burning down of MSF’s office and pharmacy is just the latest blow to what is a decimation of available healthcare options for people in Rakhine state and their continued denial from access to humanitarian assistance.

No staff were injured, but all medical stock and office equipment were destroyed. This includes lifesaving drugs such as antibiotics, instrumental in the treatment of diseases like pneumonia, primarily affecting children under five years old.

The destruction of the MSF office comes amid increasing violence witnessed in Buthidaung since last Friday. We hear reports of more than 200 homes being burned down and witness thousands of people who are displaced by the violence seeking refuge in an area directly across from where our office was located.

I don't know whose idea it was, but increasingly many websites, primarily in their forums, have started capturing the keyboard shortcut for going to the search bar in Firefox (<ctrl>+k) or even the "search in page"-function (<ctrl>+f) to now use either of those to instead pop up a search function for just searching for posts within their own website.

GTFO!!!
When I want to use the search bar to look something up at Wikipedia, DuckDuckGo and so on, or if I want to find a specific word or phrase on the page I am currently at, then being made to instead search only for matching posts on your forum is not helpful, at all, but instead an obstacle.
You are making your websites obstacles to be defeated instead of helpful, making me never want to come back again.

Might be the most idiotic website design trend I have ever seen, since the times of tens or more blinking GIFs proclaiming each page to be "under construction" in the 90s.

Here's an example of this obstructive design idiocy:

b9AcE,
@b9AcE@todon.eu avatar

@scobiform Of course, there's probably many good workarounds (thanks for the suggestion!) but I wanted to raise a public objection for the purpose of doing so might help halt and reverse the website design trend, the root cause.

b9AcE,
@b9AcE@todon.eu avatar

@scobiform I can only hope that enough end-users complain so that this is reversed.
Some people rely very much on well established keyboard-shortcuts working as expected, for efficiency, against visual impairment and such.

b9AcE,
@b9AcE@todon.eu avatar

@scobiform Thanks for the assist in calling it to the attention of relevant people!

Ah, I just noticed you have the thing that people kept insisting that I have, even after I told them that my diagnosis of LHON was confirmed with mtDNA blood test identifying it as mutation at specifically gene 11778.
So sorry for your trouble!

b9AcE,
@b9AcE@todon.eu avatar

@scobiform LHON is very uncommon too, which is good of course but also has the unfortunate side effect of not getting much funding for cures (there is no cure, yet).
My hope is that the new gene editing technology might get adapted to editing mitochondrial DNA too, so the error can be corrected, but that's just my own idea.

Yeah, I was fortunate enough to be one of the even fewer to get an improvement after peak impairment. At its worst I couldn't even see my own hand at arm's length but now I'm OK to do most things with aids and persistence.

Eyes are marvelous. So very complex an evolution. It's like a miracle that they're not breaking more, more often for more people.

b9AcE,
@b9AcE@todon.eu avatar

@scobiform I will consider it, after some rest. Very tired from alternating between excruciating pain or the morphine blurring my mind.
Thanks again!

"Ocean floor a 'reservoir' for plastic pollution, world-first study finds
[...]
New research from CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, and the University of Toronto in Canada, estimates up to 11 million tonnes of plastic pollution is sitting on the ocean floor.

Every minute, a garbage truck’s worth of plastic enters the ocean. With plastic use expected to double by 2040, understanding how and where it travels is crucial to protecting marine ecosystems and wildlife."

A comment on the "retaliatory attack" from Iran on Israel during the night to today (https://todon.eu/@b9AcE/112268490079216894).

The bombing of Iran's consulate in Damascus on April 1 killing 16 people was an obvious trap to through the Iran-theocracy's longstanding rhetoric force it to do "something" highly visible or lose the prestige amongst some people that it has been generating through its posturing, proxy low-intensity war and through its rhetoric regarding Palestine which it would lose unless it acted somehow in return for what was technically Israel bombing Iran (diplomatic mission grounds are legally actual territory of the State it represents) and therefore it would lose more of its grip to brutally oppress the people at home as well as to project imperialist power,
which was undoubtedly a situation Netanyahu and pals specifically intended to trigger by its bombing since Netanyahu desperately needs a long and escalated war as protection against the years long huge domestic protests and demands for Netanyahu's ouster and continued prosecution for corruption.

That several major world "leaders" refused to even condemn the bombing of a diplomatic mission by Israel made it clear relying on supposed intl law was not an option; Biden et al are thus co-responsible for this world-endangering escalation.

Retaliatory military attacks between Israel and Iran violate the right to life and must cease immediately, UN experts said today.
[...]
“Israel’s attack consequently violated the prohibition on the use of armed force against another state under Article 2(4) of the Charter,” the experts said. “Illegal force was used not only against Iran’s armed forces but also against Syrian territory. Israel’s attack was partly launched from the Golan Heights, which is illegally annexed Syrian territory,”
[...]
The experts said Iran’s response was also a prohibited use of force under international law. Israel’s strike on 1 April may have been serious enough to qualify as an “armed attack” on Iran, since it targeted senior military commanders and diplomatic premises. Yet Iran had no right of self-defence on 13 April because Israel’s attack concluded on 1 April. Self-defence is only lawful where is it necessary to stop a continuing armed attack. “Forcible retaliation, punishment or deterrence are illegal,” they warned.

Friday evening I suddenly got such intense toothache that I've been dizzy, shaking and vision flickering almost constantly all through the weekend, unable to sleep more than maybe 2 house total since night to Friday.
Now, I've had an emergency inspection at the People's/Public Dental Care and they told me that out of that tooth's three roots 1½ are dead, the tooth is half dead and death is spreading.
So I replied, that's appropriate, since it has made me too feel half dead by now. ;-D :-///

So, tomorrow I get to travel to a city to get an emergency tooth pulling.
Maybe then I'll be able to think properly again. Yaay!

b9AcE,
@b9AcE@todon.eu avatar

So, now I've been to the dentists' again and they stabbed off my nerve in the treacherous tooth, so hopefully I won't need morphine anymore until the surgery.
I surely do hope so. Morphine is über-yucky, mucking up my everything.

Maybe now, I can sleep?
Finally get to enjoy the new top quality mattress, pillow and duvet which arrived the same day as the tooth started screaming for retirement?
Maybe.
I'll try.
