Okay, since I'm on laundry today, a little story.

When hubs and I first got married, we were very much enjoying our little Honeymoon Bubble, and we were being lazy as Hell. We didn't do many chores, but the laundry we really let go. We weren't wearing many clothes at home anyway, so why bother. Anyhow, after weeks we finally reached the swimming suit bottoms situation, and decided it was time. It was loads and loads of laundry that needed done, so I had my husband back the trunk of the car up to a window of the house, then he popped the trunk, and I started tossing laundry out of the window into the trunk. We went to the bank, got about $30 bucks in quarters, and found the emptiest laundry mat we could, and did it all in one fell swoop. We folded it all and loaded it back into the car using those wheeled laundry carts. We never let it get that bad again, and decided it was time to be adults, and do regular chores, but it still makes me laugh imagining what the neighbors and the laundry attendant thought.

Feel free to share your own laundry story, if you feel like it, I love hearing people's stories!

mlohbihler,
@mlohbihler@techhub.social avatar

@RickiTarr not laundry, but when I was on a coop term I lived with a couple guys. With us it was dishes. It was so bad I think once we went out to buy more rather than wash them. We had a shared bathroom and I needed to go through the kitchen to get to it. One day I was walking through the kitchen and the bathroom smelled so bad I decided I could wait. When I couldn’t anymore I just held my breath. When I had to breathe I prepared for the worst, and then found that the bathroom was actually fine. Walking back into the kitchen I was hit with the smell again, and found that it never was the bathroom at all. It was peas in a closed pot that had probably been there for a couple weeks, and found just before they became sentient.

This is your reminder that McDonald's reported net income of $1.93 billion, for the first quarter of 2024. This represents an increase in net income compared to $1.8 billion for the same quarter in the prior year.

Let's also remember that people who aren't being paid a living wage, rely on government programs to make up for what McDonald's won't pay them.

So not only are you paying more to increase their profits, but you're also subsidizing McDonald's so that they can screw their employees.

mlohbihler,
@mlohbihler@techhub.social avatar

@Mrfunkedude sec... you reported income, but then complained of profits, which is different. What were their profits?

Right now Loops has a single feed in chronological order, it's not the ideal algorithm but will work for now.

When testing on my friends, they mentioned this, they are used to an algo that is tailored to them and their behaviors (durationViewed, hasLiked, hasShared, hasOpenedCommentDrawer, hasCommented, hasFollowed)

This is the most complicated aspect of Loops, no it isn't the AR filters or Camera, it's the algo and feed.

Now the key question is: feed algorithm.

Feedback + Boosts appreciated

mlohbihler,
@mlohbihler@techhub.social avatar

@shekinahcancook @csdummi @3dcandy @dansup agreed. The difference is that I KNOW what I'm seeing when there is no algo. I lose that knowledge when there is. "No algo is just a different algo" is a disingenuous argument.

So I really feel like Beyond have their formula so good that it's always a little disappointing having any other kind of 'beef' PB-alternative. My friends in the States much prefer Impossible, but we found it tasted too much like actual meat, but they didn't really jive with the taste of Beyond (which I really like) and you can't get Impossible in the UK yet so it's not relevant for us yet. So tonight's meatballs were a mix of about 1 part Beyond to 3 parts Meatless (which I think is like dry plasticine, but will go OK in bolognese / chilli, but barely any better than tofu or lentils). They came out fine. Everyone will like them, but the only reason they're half decent is because of the Beyond element. Is anyone else messing with meat replacements and have any opinions? I've been doing this for a few years now and would like some alternatives ideally!

mlohbihler,
@mlohbihler@techhub.social avatar

@TheBreadmonkey we had some Beyond the other night. My wife made ma po with it and it was really quite good. Still, when I read the ingredients I wonder if this stuff is just another heavily processed food. And besides, I don't need my veggies to impersonate meat. I'm fine just eating veggies.

I really like insects and every time I can I observe them and take a photo, when I took these photos in Aalborg Dk. I discovered that not only humans are expert milkers. This black ant (lasius niger) takes care of aphids, which it then milks. The ants climb the branches of a small bush and head towards a group of aphids (Aphidae) that are calmly sucking the sap from the plant. When they reach them, an ant touches the back of one of the aphids with its antennae and it immediately releases a drop of sugary liquid that is quickly drunk by the ant. A symbiotic relationship has developed between ants and aphids in which the aphid feeds the ant and in return the ant is responsible for protecting them against their predators, which they attack when they approach.

As long as I’m meditating on the dark of winter and the soundless void of space I’d like to see if anyone has found any good “scary math movies” (or books) too often attempts at “mathematical horror” are just about how people who like math are kind of strange and maybe that’s “scary” but I don’t feel that. No what I want is for the math itself to be scary.

And not in the “oh no he learned too much and went cuh-ray-zee!” way.

mlohbihler,
@mlohbihler@techhub.social avatar

@futurebird I'd have to search, but there was a short story where the main character discovered a proof the 2+2 did not actually equal 4. She tried to keep it secret beyond showing it to a few colleagues who could not find any fault, because she knew that it upended everything we know. Sounds goofy when I describe it but the way it was written was pretty scary.

    If you care about the children of Gaza and their families, then you will support the effort of Israel to destroy the Hamas terrorists who have deprived them of resources and used them as human shields for over 15 years. For Gaza as much as for Israel, Hamas must be destroyed. For a future of peaceful coexistence in a land we will share, Hamas must be destroyed.

    War is painful beyond words but we have seen in history that in the space after a war new possibilities can open up.

    For now we must live in violence and pain but better days may lie ahead once this evil is put down.

    mlohbihler,

    @oregonmiles I can get behind the idea that hamas doesn't really care about Palestinian lives, except that I'm pretty sure Isreal doesn't either

    mlohbihler,
    @mlohbihler@techhub.social avatar

    @oregonmiles I think your points are valid. Still, I'd first like to separate the Israeli government from its people (who are much like people anywhere I expect), and second suggest that it was the attitude of the Israeli government over decades that prompted the creation of hamas in the first place. I realize there is a lot of history here, and the entire area seems to make a point of treating each other like shit, but as the superior power I hold israel to a higher standard of behavior. As such I choose to withhold my approval of either group as things currently stand.

    I’m really starting to lose my mind on every person who says “but they/them isn’t grammatically correct” because yes, the fuck it is. It literally is. It actually, literally, is grammatically correct. It is, in fact, so grammatically correct that it predates he/him or she/her.

    But then I’m suddenly arguing based on a premise set by people who expressly do not care about me – over a language that constantly contradicts itself and (thankfully) has no governing body. And this is how I lose.

    mlohbihler,
    @mlohbihler@techhub.social avatar

    @ryanhoulihan I used to be one of those complaining about the whole "but it's plural" thing. Then I realized one day that when I didn't know the gender of a person I quite naturally used they/them. I've since shut up.
