Last night I was going in through the side door of a fancy Vegas club with some friends when the bouncer called me to the side and asked me for my license. I showed him my driver's licence, and he said, "Ha ha, your other license."

I said "Huh?"

He said "Your PILB."

Me: "Huh?"

He said, "Look. I get it. I see the celebs in your party. You need to run security. But I can't have you operating in here without a Private Security license. Show me your PILB."

Me: "Oh! I'm not security!"

Article about a threat actor:
> does not mention "hackers" even once

InfoSec pundit linking to the article:
> HACKERS HACKING HACKITY-HACKS

🤣

Like, why? There is zero people that will not understand "attacker" correctly in this context. There is zero need to drop the h-bomb. Why go out of your way to force "hackers" into this?

jrdepriest,

@rysiek
We lost that "hackers" connotation battle a long time ago.
I'm still bitter.

The casual cruelty that comment sections (and social media replies) enable toward total strangers makes me despair.

It's like you're driving by and see someone's house that they've worked so hard to build and you just throw garbage out the window. The moment passes so quickly for you, but they're left cleaning up the garbage and wondering why you did that.

It sucks. Don't do that.

jrdepriest,

@fraying

It's also the perfect place for drive-by kindness. You can say a nice thing about someone that you will never meet and it costs you nothing to do it.
It's unfortunate that modern human nature has trained us to ignore a small kindness and boost, even if just to point out how cruel it is, a small spite.

With that said, your avatar is adorable and I love it.

Me: finding a job application❗✨

THE FORM: "You should enter your resume and I will fill all the fields for you MAGICALLY" :magic_wand:

Me: "No thanks"

Me: spend time carefully filling each field in the job application manually and wishing they would just read my resume I also spent hours building manually and offers much better explanations and context

THE FORM: "Now that you have filled all the fields, give me your resume!" :neko_smiley:

How to improve your writing:

“He felt he couldn’t take any more of the fight.”

vs.

“He cringed as the blood and sweat splattered onto him from the fight.”

great example of show vs. tell

The biggest weakness I encounter is making each character's behavior unique but understandable.
Not everybody can shake their head and sigh when exasperated. Somebody needs to open their mouth and then immediately and audibly close it. Someone needs to raise their eyebrows and look around the room.
It's tough to keep all that personality properly aligned when writing.
How do you do it? I find myself falling back on simile and metaphor far more often than I should.

One of the funniest things about Polyamory: it is almost certain, much to your surprise, that you do, indeed, have "a type." 😅

Me: I don't really have a type. I don't go looking for this or that kind of person, I'm open to anybody I really vibe with and enjoy having fun and deep conversations with. And I'm bi, so I'm open to genders and everything.

Dates a series of autistic trans people of lesbian experience

Me: okay, but that's still pretty open

Half the people she dates have golden retriever energy, the other half have misanthropic supervillain energy

    The shit Texans are doing at the border is Bond villain-level. It's inhumane and disgusting. And they know and that's the point. I don't know how a person can see other people as garbage. There's no logic to it, no truth. As a species, we have a capacity for empathy and understanding. We are normally born with it. This kind of hatred has to be willfully and purposely taught to kids. It's indoctrination.

    I see a lot of folks making the argument that yeah, a lot of layoffs are happening, but it's due to irresponsible hiring. And yeah, it's true that you shouldn't hire a bunch of engineers that aren't doing anything; which usually isn't the case.

    I think people don't understand just how unbelievably BAD the tech grift is right now for people in leadership positions. It's not just that they hired a lot of people, it's that they also tasked them with working on the wrong things.

    My dad retired last year at the age of 68. He was self-employed, ran his own dry cleaners for 40 years. He woke up at 3:30 AM Monday - Saturday to get started and only took Sundays off (but he would still go in to work after church sometimes). He thought he'd have to work until the day he died because, believe it or not, there isn't a lot of money in dry cleaning. And that was even with him being a stingy asshole who paid his employees the legal minimum.
    He worked his ass off every day. I know because I worked there for a summer when I was 15. I can't imagine doing that work into my 40s and 50s, let alone pushing 70.
    He's been trying to sell the cleaners for the last 10 or 15 years and it was only by serendipity that he found a buyer recently right after another one had backed out.
    The COVID stimulus money helped keep him afloat long enough to find a buyer.

    That's how the United States treats entrepreneurs, like it's embarrassed by them for not already being millionaires when they get started.

    I am gonna take the, “did we even watch the same show as the ultra conservative and fascist people saying ‘Trek/Wars/Who has gone ‘woke’” even further, and go with there are pretty much three kinds of successful sci-fi serials:

    ~dystopian or subversive ones making pretty obvious commentary about fascism

    -ones with some slight hope for the human future that have always made at least a little social commentary about how we could make things more egalitarian and open for POC, women, gay people, etc

    ~shitty space marines with generally poor writing that made ad revenue

    And the first two flew over way too many chuckleheads’ noggins.

    jrdepriest,

    @hacks4pancakes

    It helps emphasize that these people do not start out as conservative, selfish, fascist asshole.
    When they were younger, they watched these shows and loved them.
