It kind of depends on whether "unhinged" includes "way more appeal to sexuality than anything on adult TV at the time" in which case 1976 Electrawoman and Dynagirl
@BlackAzizAnansi oh dear Hobo Kelly, local LA show in the 60s. Remembering it now if not for wiki I'd be half sure it was a fever dream. Not in a bad way but...
I was a teenager when the Teletubbies came out. I turned my head, glanced at the television, and then.... couldn't move or breathe for what felt like forever. My brain just... locked up. Wtf am I looking at. Fatal error, abort retry fail. Wat.
The purple thing on the screen was jumping around screaming about toast when I snapped out of my frozen trance. I don't know WHAT that show would've done to me if I was younger when I ran into that brain ray and fully internalized it. Brrr!
With the qualification of "Children's", I'd have to say The Magic Roundabout. It was an ostensibly-for-kids puppet-animated show from the BBC that used to air at 5:45pm. One year the BBC decided that they were going to move it to 3:30pm, but had to move it back because there was a huge public outcry from people who couldn't get home from work in time to watch it.
Let's just say it had a lot of humor that went waaaaay over the heads of the kids it was supposedly aimed at... 😅
@BlackAzizAnansi In the Seattle area we had The J.P. Patches Show. Hosted by two ratty looking clowns, J.P. and his friend Gertrude, it was unrehearsed and filmed live. The show had a following among grown ups as well thanks double entendre jokes that (mostly) flew over the kids heads.
@BlackAzizAnansi remember that candle cove creepypasta?? im not shitting you i watched that show as a kid. maybe its just a figment of my imagination but i swear to god i remember there being a pirate show with puppets that scared me as a kid /srs
@BlackAzizAnansi Didn’t see the actual scandalous episode, but did watch Soupy Sales from time to time. If you’re not familiar with what I’m alluding to, it’s absolutely worth clicking through to the link. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/greenmail/
