What's the most unhinged children's television show that you grew up watching?

@BlackAzizAnansi Me: “You Can’t Do That on Television”.

Stuff I let my kids watch: “Yo Gabba Gabba”

@BlackAzizAnansi Either Land of the Lost or Spartacus and the Sun Beneath the Sea

It kind of depends on whether "unhinged" includes "way more appeal to sexuality than anything on adult TV at the time" in which case 1976 Electrawoman and Dynagirl

AdrianRiskin,

@BlackAzizAnansi oh dear Hobo Kelly, local LA show in the 60s. Remembering it now if not for wiki I'd be half sure it was a fever dream. Not in a bad way but...

just_me_gi,

@BlackAzizAnansi Today's Special on PBS. About a man who became a mannequin during the day when they took his hat off?

Fraggle Rock?

I was a teenager when the Teletubbies came out. I turned my head, glanced at the television, and then.... couldn't move or breathe for what felt like forever. My brain just... locked up. Wtf am I looking at. Fatal error, abort retry fail. Wat.

The purple thing on the screen was jumping around screaming about toast when I snapped out of my frozen trance. I don't know WHAT that show would've done to me if I was younger when I ran into that brain ray and fully internalized it. Brrr!

@violetmadder @BlackAzizAnansi Amazingly the theme song is EXACTLY as I remember it from 50 years ago 😂

Shan_is_sweet,
hishamzerriffi,

@BlackAzizAnansi Does the story of Robin Hood, but in the year 3000, with them wearing jetpacks count as "unhinged"?

Oh, and the recurring villain is the Sherrif of N.O.T.T. (National Outer-space Terrestrial Territories)

More here (oiginally aired in 60s but still on TV in 80s in a few places):

@BlackAzizAnansi Uuuuuuhhhhhhh....

With the qualification of "Children's", I'd have to say The Magic Roundabout. It was an ostensibly-for-kids puppet-animated show from the BBC that used to air at 5:45pm. One year the BBC decided that they were going to move it to 3:30pm, but had to move it back because there was a huge public outcry from people who couldn't get home from work in time to watch it.

Let's just say it had a lot of humor that went waaaaay over the heads of the kids it was supposedly aimed at... 😅

@BlackAzizAnansi The Great Space Coaster or the Godzilla cartoon.

mazz,

@BlackAzizAnansi My husband grew up watching an alien, a caveman and a marionette band together to fight evil across the universe, and I can’t top that.

@BlackAzizAnansi In the Seattle area we had The J.P. Patches Show. Hosted by two ratty looking clowns, J.P. and his friend Gertrude, it was unrehearsed and filmed live. The show had a following among grown ups as well thanks double entendre jokes that (mostly) flew over the kids heads.

fulanigirl,

@BlackAzizAnansi Looney Tunes. There was a lot of violence and bad behavior in those cartoons. We loved them.

@BlackAzizAnansi the 1980s Sunday morning Christian cartoons were abominations. Davey & Goliath and at least 1 other.

I assume they were broadcast as punishment for kids not in church.

Lightfighter,

@nosmaharba @BlackAzizAnansi I remember having to sit through Davey and Goliath in order to get to Gumby.
