Following Google Maps directions in rural Tasmania and encountered this sign.

jackwilliambell,
@jackwilliambell@rustedneuron.com avatar

@MikeElgan

Boy do I know that one.

Google maps marks my (admittedly very long) driveway as a road actually located a quarter mile south of my place.

As a result I get three or four people a month driving past my 'keep out' and 'private road' signs to whom I must explain that Google is wrong.

Then I explain that driving past keep out signs up here in the mountains is a REALLY BAD IDEA and they are incredibly lucky they did it at my place and not one of my neighbors, who come out with a gun.

@cstross

Hahahaha… Is someone maybe still pissed about some childhood fight?

> "In summary: Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth is a bowl full of lizard jizz from history’s greatest sociopath. One wonders if a UN Resolution calling for the phrase “ART HOUSE HACK” to be forcibly tattooed on Mr. Coen’s forehead might be called for. Joel Coen has so thoroughly put his foot through this “piece of art” that it’s really more of a “piece of FART”, but this time, he can’t blame his fuckup on the dog."

The new dollar store in the closest town finally opened today. I stopped in to check it out and was unsurprised to see their prices on the same goods as you can get at the IGA were anywhere from somewhat cheaper to far cheaper.

Which is bad news in the long run because I'm afraid the IGA will go out of business and then all the things they carry, but the dollar store doesn't, will require a two hour trip to buy.

In related news, I spent a dollar to make my dog REALLY happy. 🐶🦴

TFW you happen to be looking at your blog’s log and suddenly 2000-plus Fediverse instances hit it, meaning somebody said something about it, but there’s no way to find out who/where. Oh well, hope they were nice.

jackwilliambell,

@timbray

This is why blogs should have an #ActivityPub enabled pingback service of some kind.

For now I think a smart move is to set up an 'announcement' account for your blog that posts a link to every new blog post; then aggregates any responses to it as blog post comments.

That way anyone who follows the announcement account can just boost the announcement and (maybe) post a comment response.

Russia might have used its new 3M22 Zircon hypersonic missile for the first time against Ukraine this morning — Defense Express.

Photos of the wreckage labeled "ZM22" have been published.

They were found allegedly in Dniprovsky district of Kyiv near the affected power line. The publication assumes that the missile was shot down, as it is unlikely that the power line was its target.

Further investigation of the missile will be conducted.

@Free_Press

If the Ukrainians shot down a hypersonic missile with USA Patriot anti-missiles, we now know why the Pentagon hasn't been more openly worried by ZM22 capabilities.

But no matter how they did it, if it is a ZM22 and the Ukrainians shot it down with anything that's a black eye for Russia and their high-tech weapons programs.

    That was, basically, the plot of a novel I worked on for a bit and then abandoned.

    Only my novel also had sentient ravens, a taboo on banks and any currency other than metal coins, North America broken into a hundred little theocracies, and a resurgent Aztec polity in Mexico and Southern California armed with nuclear weapons.

    ETA: My story didn't feature any progress in social sciences; rather a general regression into a semi-industrial Middle Ages.

    @deshipu

    Well, yes. And no. Reasoning and adaptability beyond what is possible with termites would be involved. Also their advancement happens over a period of a century, as opposed to developing evolution-driven emergent behaviors over millennia.

    In my story the ravens do have a kind of group intelligence, but it's related to flocking behaviors. They are also very intelligent individually and have a much expanded vocabulary over existing Corvus language. Enough a human can talk to one.
