Alright. Gonna write a piece on the impact of users on our culture in the

So let’s start with a poll. Boost please!

Are you neurodivergent?

(Self-diagnosis is valid, I know how freaking hard it can be to get the official one!)

I don't respond to online polls.

I can state that I have a diagnosis for adult ADHD. (Characterized as 'severe', whatever in the hell that means.)

I'm also old now (mid 60s) and am finding my mask and coping strategies are eroding with age. I have responded to this by living as a hermit in the woods. (Albeit a hermit in the woods with a satellite Internet connection.)

Note: Many of us on the #Fediverse either do not or no longer have birdsite accounts and with Elon's recent changes this means we can't view a Tweet, even if we wanted to follow a link there. (Which I, for one, do not. Nor do I follow links to the facesite.)

I know it is extra work, but if you believe it is worth bringing our attention to a particular birdsite post, please take a screen shot and add alt-text with the text of the tweet for those using screen readers.

Thank you.

'The ruling class has to push the myth of “personal responsibility” so you don’t realize that most of your perceived failures are actually systemic.'

jackwilliambell,
@jackwilliambell@rustedneuron.com avatar

@ned

I'm sympathetic towards this, but IMO many personal failures are equally or more due to genetic tendencies and mis-socialization. (The latter of which is a combination of macro and micro and could also be pointed to as systemic.)

And what I don't like about that is you can draw the conclusion we are all automatons with no real will of our own. Which is also not entirely true.

So, basically, my feelings on this are complicated.

It’s strange how in older code editors, like BBEdit and TextMate, being able to hit ⌘R to run the current file if you had a script open was standard, but none of the newer apps seem to do this?

In case you missed it, all links on Mastodon count as 23 characters towards your limit, no matter how many characters the link really is.

So, you don't need to use link shorteners on Mastodon as they won't actually affect the link's length.

Mastodon does this because it's better for everyone's privacy to avoid link shortener services, it means people can see what they're clicking on, and the link won't stop working if the shortener service shuts down.

More info at:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/you-dont-need-link-shorteners-on-mastodon/

jackwilliambell,
@jackwilliambell@rustedneuron.com avatar

@feditips

Nearly everyone using link shorteners are not doing it to save character count.

Instead they are people who perceive themselves as 'influencers' trying to side-step the fact Mastodon does not give you 'engagement' metrics outside of 'likes' and 'boosts'. They are using them as trackers.

And they are violating a social contract unique to the Fediverse. It kind of pisses me off.

Since you can use an existing domain, and the post says many already have, then where's the value here? Only the convenience of not having to set things up yourself?

Also, if you create a custom domain through them can you share it?

jackwilliambell,
@jackwilliambell@rustedneuron.com avatar

@timbray

But that's assuming everyone who doesn't have a domain wants their own domain name; I suspect such is not the case – especially once they find out all the 'cool' domain names are taken.

I dunno. But I'm thinking maybe people who already have a domain name and can set up DNS are also the primary market for custom domain names on Bluesky.

Either that or we prepare ourselves for posts by @me.

if you use Linux on your personal computer: what do you like about it?

I used to be super into customizing my window manager, but now I mostly like that it's so easy to install software, and that the environment is the same as on a Linux server

(please no arguing about whether people "should" use Linux on their personal computers, I'm just curious about why you personally like it)

I switched from a Mac Pro to a System76 desktop last year and I really love PopOS. Easily the best distro ever for someone who just wants to use a computer and not spend all their time futzing with things to make it do what you want it to do or keep it updated. Plus I like the WM way better than Gnome or KD and think flatpacks are the best thing since sliced bread.

At some point I'll overcome inertia and install PopOS on my old Macbook too.

    I spent six months on Anderson AFB in Guam back in 1980. Between the Air Force and the Navy that place was a fortress and I imagine it's only got more so since.

    Also it's riddled with caves. One Japanese soldier held out for years after WWII by hiding in them.

    It occurred to me that there were two groups of people that came to Mastodon in November. The first thought Twitter was literally going to shut down and needed virtual methodone for their social media addiction. The second were users dissatisfied with what Twitter had become and jumped at an alternative. I believe it's the second group that have stuck around.

    jackwilliambell,
    @jackwilliambell@rustedneuron.com avatar

    @mike

    I believe it's a bit more fractured than that. Besides the inevitable 'exceptions that prove the rule' I think a lot of people who consider themselves 'influencers' were part of the second group, but ended up crawling back to the birdsite after realizing they had no clout here.

    And then there is a group where their social media use is tied directly to current events – security experts, war bloggers, political 'analysts', etc. These gave up on the #Fediverse because it isn't a firehose.

    @elduvelle

    I find representing political opinion across a single left/right dimension completely useless in representing opinion and frustratingly simplistic.

    In fact I'm on record as calling the 'political compass' 'somewhat valid' because showing human political opinions across two dimensions is superior to a single dimension of left vs right. But, in truth, without yet more dimensions it remains overly reductionist.

    Of the 'political compass'? Anarchist. Lower right is (supposedly, but doesn't seem to hold up when you look at the real thing) Libertarian.

    Edited to add: But that's the thing actually! For example there are different forms of anarchism, ranging from 'no laws, no lords' to Syndicalism. Some want a form of capitalism, but without property rights, and some want communism, but without the Party.

    And the same heterodoxy holds true for the all the other positions on the chart.

    Y'know how "#realist" became a synonym for "#asshole?" As in, "I'm not a racist, I'm just a #RaceRealist?" That "realism" is also used to discredit the idea of democracy, among a group of self-styled "#LibertarianElitists," who claim that social science proves that democracy doesn't work - and can't work.

    @pluralistic

    I kind of hate how those people ahistorically co-opted 'realism' and used the term that way. Same with 'rationalism'.

    Realism and rationalism are mental tools intended to divorce your thinking from your prejudices and let you make decisions based on the actual facts before you. Not to buttress your prejudices with rationalizations.

    As a result of this doublespeak, anyone who follows the Stoic path becomes suspect for using the terms properly.
