Welp, I knew Microsoft's CoPilot+ Recall was going to be a privacy disaster but I didn't expect it to turn into an enterprise computing catastrophe for Microsoft quite this fast!

But this can't be a one-off. Any large enterprise that has to comply with a regulated privacy environment—HIPAA in the USA, GDPR in the EU, banking/insurance/finance globally—must be considering a ban on Microsoft installations on laptop/desktop computers right now or be breaking the law.

@rivetgeek Intel just now announced next-gen CPUs with an NPU suitable for running this crap ("Lunar Lake"). And there are rumours about them pushing Recall onto Win11 machines that don't have an NPU, because Line Must Go Up or something.

I'm just glad, as an Apple user, that Microsoft jumped on this particular landmine first: the probability of Apple announcing anything like this functionality at WWDC next week must now be approximately zero.

I got an email from them saying one of my proofs broke.

But… I just don't care. No one uses public-key cryptography or verifies proof of ownership.

Or am I wrong?

@Edent keybase died long ago of feature bloat and an acute cryptocurrency infection. Pity really, I would still like to have what it was trying to do at the start.

It isn't, and he's scammed out of $500 and control of his accounts. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/facebook-customer-support-scam-1.7219581

Signal strongly opposes the newest proposal in Europe.

Let there be no doubt: we will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees.

This proposal--if passed and enforced against us--would require us to make this choice.

It's surveillance wine in safety bottles.

This means, among other things, that uBlock Origin is about to be disabled in Chrome. Google will choose a different extension to recommend but it can not be as effective as Origin.

Following 's example, may I instead recommend you switch to .

Firefox will continue to support Manifest v2, and consequently uBlock Origin and other extensions that can not be implemented with Manifest v3.

Happy browsing.

Another day of downtime because I forgot that updating mod_phpX.Y requires me to update to phpX.Y-sqlite3. Quickly resolved, but.

Is there a way for me to specify local-only dependency changes in apt? As in, to say "I know that out in the world mod_PHP doesn't depend on php-sqlite3 but here on this computer, for reasons it definitely is?

Microsoft not saying a peep about the Recall privacy scandal is a huge tell of how much the company is focused on security

We should have had a statement by now that Recall is either re-engineered or removed

FYI, such devices will be illegal to sell within the EU soon. Hopefully Iceland can adopt similar legislation.

@mcc me thinking about using systemd: "I don't understand why people are so mad about this, launchd is better than sysv init, this is just launchd for linux, I guess they couldn't just port it because some low-level stuff is different but I'm sure it's basically the same"

me actually using systemd: "fuck fuck what is this shit what the fuck why didn't they just actually port launchd to linux, there's no excuse for this"

tef,
@tef@mastodon.social avatar

@glyph so you know how ticketmaster gouges people on tickets but in practice a lot of the venues are in on the game?

like, the thing about systemd is that it's in response to problems kernel maintainers had, not problems users had

so although systemd gets a bad rep i do think it's a lightning rod for complaints about linux
