📣 Starting 1.00pm we are continuing our infrastructure works - expect some downtime and restarts. This is in order to keep the search engine stable.

Three things.

If to believe our stats system, we've accrued:

  1. 1,114,463 searches overall (starting from 21 March 2023);
  2. a jaw-dropping daily searches record, set on 8 May 2024, at 208,751 searches;
  3. and, we've managed to have an average daily at 2,679 searches!

This is awesome.

We're also sorry that it took so long to resolve the issue - we are a really small team working pro publico bono.

We've initially thought it was a DDoS attack - this is the first thought when an immediate sustained surge in search requests happens. Requests were counted somewhere between 160 to even 200 thousands daily. This is an unprecedented growth - we were noting 300 to 400 (not thousands of) searches daily. Some things I could recall before this happened, is that @lukaso666 was seeking for Esperanto translations (thank you!) proofreading, and some singular mentions about us to other fediverse users.

As we do not maintain anything else in the SoMe world besides our fediverse presence, it is unknown whether someone popular outside of this bubble found out our search engine and mentioned us.

We will be continuing works on the infrastructure later this evening or tomorrow.

EDIT: the last update of our statistics brought us a new record 🎉

Dzień dobry!

Niewiele jest bardziej satysfakcjonujących komend od "git push".

Zapowiadana ostatnio aktualizacja Herbsmana pojawiła się w Internecie. Zawiera wszystko opisywane w poście pod tytułem "Raport z pracy I", czyli zmiany w menu, wyszukiwarkę oraz nowy dział i nowy artykuł zawierający opisy doświadczeń z Sinicuichi.

Do czasu, aż ogarnę się z instagramem i fb, usunąłem linki do nich ze strony głównej bloga. Ani trochę nie odnajduję się na tych platformach, ale dzisiaj to wciąż najlepszy sposób na dotarcie do szerszej grupy odbiorców.

Zarejestrowałem się też na . Podobno ma być kiedyś zintegrowane z protokołem Activity Pub, ale mam przeczucie, że wiele instancji Mastodona odetnie się od serwerów Mety.

Byłoby miło, gdyby istniała możliwość automatycznego publikowania treści z pol.social na Threads, abym nie musiał się tam logować i rejestrować. Widzę, że Buffer oferuje obsługę Mastodona, więc może jest na to szansa. Przetestuję i dam znać.

@herbsman: tutaj założyciel oraz SNM SVMetaSearch - nie twierdzę, że Facebook czy Instagram są potrzebne. Wręcz przeciwnie, można założyć, że każdy projekt, o ile dobrze promowany, dosięgnie również efekt tzw. marketingu wirusowego. Co za tym idzie - benefituje platforma, która wcześniej była bardzo niszowa. Taki win-win dla obu stron.

@svmetasearch a czy Wasz indeks też jest open-source, a jego zawartość publiczna?

@mstankiewicz: jeżeli wyszukasz cokolwiek w naszym indeksie, to chyba raczej dostajesz informacje z indeksu, nie?

Odnośnie dumpów, nie stać nas na ich przechowywanie ze względu na brak zapasowego serwera pod to, poza tym, to by było strasznie nieopłacalne na ten moment. Indeks się stale rozszerza (średnio 6-8 dokumentów na sekundę) i gdybyśmy tworzyli dump po każdej operacji dodania dokumentu do indeksu, to serwer by wysiadł.

EDIT: chyba nie do końca ogarnąłem, że nie chodzi o aż taką otwartość, można przyjąć podobny model jak Wikipedia - dumpy dostępne maksymalnie do kilku dni wstecz, generowane raz dziennie. Ale to wciąż wymaga nakładu finansowego na serwery, które te dumpy będą trzymać.

I'm really disappointed with DuckDuckGo lately. It has been enshittified by adding the new AI feature and search quality has been deteriorated, so I don't trust them anymore. I'm thinking of switching to searXNG, but I'm not interested in self-hosting. So looking for trustworthy public instance which has strict no-log policy, any suggestions?
