My laptop screen broke, so I figured I could use my as replacement. Didn't want to loose Steam OS, though, it's a gaming device after all.

So I bought a SanDisk SD card for 35€, and used to flash a workstation disk image onto it. Took a few days to understand what packages I need for the full workstation experience, but in the the end the process was surprisingly smooth.

@triskelion@floss.social avatar

@swsnr I really wish systemd would get an initramfs generator feature so we won't need Dracut or Mkinitcpio anymore. They should be obsolete already. I'm currently using Booster*, but it's not seeing much active development.

I see some people are really disappointed about Debian packaging a stripped-down version of KeePassXC. But hey, I actually wish there was also a minimal @thunderbird package without integrations of IRC or Matrix etc, just with core email functionality.

@thunderbird I joined Mozilla Connect just to submit this proposal. From what I've seen, submissions on there tend to be lengthy paragraphs lacking in clarity. I've written it in the structured style of Fedora changes, thanks to @Conan_Kudo :P

I'm looking for a privacy-focused provider with IMAP support. Preferably email-only provider (without calendar or cloud storage integration). No weird spam filtering system, zero-access encryption for data at rest, OpenPGP for encryption, 2FA, custom domain support, no personal info required for signup and accepts payment with cryptocurrency. Plus, it should perform well on the assessment at https://internet.nl/test-mail.

Watching The Doors live at The Hollywood Bowl (1968)¹ and hacking on Kitten² and Domain³.

All in all, not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon in my book.

(I’ve almost got database backup/restore working in Kitten and I’ve just finished porting Domain to the latest Kitten with JSDB 5⁴.)

@aral I wanted to give it a try but didn't have enough time. The keybindings appear promising, but might take some time to get used to.

@aral As someone who's really into dark themes, I gotta say, this light theme is really pleasing.

Pondering to program a very old-school ad system for my blog. Like VERY old-school. A directory with banner ads as static graphic files, PNG only. A plugin for Jekyll to randomly select banner ads when regenerating the site. That's all. No cookies, no tracking, no targeting, no JavaScript, no nothing. Just banner ads with a clickable URL. Bring back the old web :)

#Gandi was my domain registrar for many years (20+). But they raised prices after being acquired last year in ways I cannot support anymore.

So I went looking and compared prices, based on my domain portfolio, limited to EU-based registrars. The fediverse was really helpful in sharing candidates, thank you to all who helped!

Result: From an average of 22€/year per domain I can now go down to 12€/year.

AND NO, JAN, THIS DOESNT MEAN YOU CAN BUY MORE DOMAINS!1!! ;)

5️⃣ Here's the 5th installment of my series of posts highlighting key new features of the upcoming v256 release of systemd.

I am pretty sure all of you are well aware of the venerable "sudo" tool that is a key component of most Linux distributions since a long time. At the surface it's a tool that allows an unprivileged user to acquire privileges temporarily, from within their existing login sessions, for just one command, or maybe for a subshell.

"sudo" is very very useful, as it…

I've been criticizing git nonstop for months on here but I really do love it. I've been using it for probably 13 years, I'm used to all of the warts that I run into regularly, and I don't think I've had a major problem with it anytime in the last 7 years or so.

not to minimize all of the very real problems that people have with git but I really do believe that it's possible to use git successfully

It’s strange how little we talk about how many computers are in a computer these days, given their responsibilities. I never hear anyone complaining about the dangers of a Qualcomm monoculture, or about the invisibility of wifi chipset or sdcard firmware.

It happened! Vim is now among the apps that have adopted the $XDG_CONFIG_HOME standard for storing user-specific configuration files. However, there are still many apps that use the older ~/.app convention or other specific locations for storing configuration files. Why is this the case?

I'm really disappointed with DuckDuckGo lately. It has been enshittified by adding the new AI feature and search quality has been deteriorated, so I don't trust them anymore. I'm thinking of switching to searXNG, but I'm not interested in self-hosting. So looking for trustworthy public instance which has strict no-log policy, any suggestions?
