I keep reading that #GoogleSearch changes are killing small sites. They are indeed.
Last year I figured that the only way to keep my blog somewhat relevant was to strengthen the direct commucation with readers. I bet on #RSS and #ActivityPub.
Year over year, Google traffic share went down from 46% to 25% and direct traffic share went up from 37% to 54%. And the total traffic is up!
@sesivany This is the way! Usually I find interesting blog posts on the Fediverse or https://lobste.rs and add them in my feed. It's rare for me to come across useful blogs through search results.
Here is my new GNU/Linux distribution guide about Debian KDE 12, the right GNU/Linux distribution for professional digital painting in 2024! Also about three major problems with GNU/Linux distros that will drive away all professional artists, IMO, and how I got kicked out of the Fedora KDE ecosystem with F40, which imposed Plasma6 and Wayland. I hope it helps other artists here!
I just made a Linux joke without even trying while talking about something entirely different and I have so many questions about my life choices. (The context was that I was informed that the same man is responsible for both unleaded gasoline and cfc based refrigerants, thereby dooming the earth twice, to which I replied, “oh, like how the same guy gave us PulseAudio and systemd?”)
@alcinnz What a coincidence! I was just thinking the same thing. If I could choose a life without technology around forever, I would, but I can't stand a short break from it. FOMO is a real struggle. 🙃
@arstechnica@Mojeek and Stract looks good but search results are really bad. searXNG is nice if you can self-host but none of the public instance looks trustworty. I'm currently using @brave search, results are good but they enable usage analytics or something by default, you can turn it off in preference but I'm always using browser private mode in Librewolf so it's annoying to turn it off every time and also companies relation with crypto stuff is somewhat shady
@Mojeek@arstechnica@brave For example if you search "Serpent OS", you find result of an article as first result instead of the official website, official website is below and it contains referral link from ITS FOSS, wtf
@elevenhsoft@burntkrispe@Kiloku Maybe people are assuming you're s76 employee since you're working on COSMIC ecosystem apps. Maybe you can add in your bio that you're not S76 employee just hacking on COSMIC :-)
@kravemir They're just posting it. That article doesn't say "NVIDIA is now open-source! Throw away your AMD graphics card, get NVIDIA today!". @9to5linux publishes articles on new update happening in Linux world, that's all.
My laptop screen broke, so I figured I could use my #SteamDeck as replacement. Didn't want to loose Steam OS, though, it's a gaming device after all.
So I bought a SanDisk SD card for 35€, and used #mkosi to flash a #fedora workstation disk image onto it. Took a few days to understand what #fedora packages I need for the full workstation experience, but in the the end the process was surprisingly smooth.
@swsnr I really wish systemd would get an initramfs generator feature so we won't need Dracut or Mkinitcpio anymore. They should be obsolete already. I'm currently using Booster*, but it's not seeing much active development.
