There’s nothing like being outside with an early morning coffee,
watching the golden sun just hitting the trees,
listening to the sounds of nature waking up.
Work in progress: a set of three olive utensils. This is all very hard scrap wood that's been hanging around for a year so there are definitely power tools involved. Last step is my favorite: a very close rubdown with cabinet scrapers, which leave a super-smooth tool-finished piece that can be oiled without any sanding at all because the scraper cuts the fibers instead of tearing them. #woodworking#carving#spoons#wip
Everyone in Alaska has enjoyed a Universal Basic Income for over 40 years for just breathing in Alaska. Has it harmed them? No. Employment increased. Inflation slowed. Poverty went down. Obesity went down. Child abuse went down.

In 2023 it was $1312 for the year. I don’t know if that’s per person or per household.
Alaska calls it the Permanent Fund Dividend rather than UBI.

Looks like they have to apply each year. The amount, and whether a person qualifies is based on different factors - one being how much the oil industry gained from Alaskan oils. The program relies on oil profits. So in reality they’ve set it up to encourage oil use. 🤦♀️
Maybe some people are "sad", because they live in a society that is actually prejudiced against them, and trying harder isn't going to fix it for them.
Employers have zero use for you once you reach a certain age.. it begins around 40, only you don’t know it. 50? You’re becoming trash to them - completely ignored - shut out of earning an income. It’s as if they promote homelessness for anyone whose skin is no longer porcelain.
You hear that younger generations? Coming soon to a company near you.
“Bell Burnell has said it doesn't bother her much that she wasn't included. "[I]n those days students weren't recognized by the committee," she said in 2009.
Fifty years after Bell Burnell noticed that blip in the red ink, her observation has earned her a very big award: a Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, which comes with a check for $3 million.“
It looks like the original “poem” came from a 1915 book called
“Are Women People?” A Book of Rhymes for Suffrage Times. - Alice Deur Miller
An outrageous book with all sorts of ridiculous beliefs by men at the time, who irl had no other value for us other than to live for them. I’ve read about a third of it and it just blows my mind.
And for those who hate boomers? If you read this you might get just a glimpse of why we fought hard for so many rights back in the day that you benefit from. Even though it’s written as satire, this was based on reality.
Might be that I already shared it here since time ago. But I love this video so, so much. Those ladies are just delightful. And let's celebrate it - this is now 60 years old. How things have changed. And haven't changed.
And I'm in total awe about their skill as both spinner and knitter.

Andy Boenau @Boenau It's often safest for a cyclist to go through a red light. Here's an example of safely keeping momentum. Excellent video by @Techaltar about the #SocialWeb. You can basically send this to anyone who wants to learn what makes Mastodon unique compared to other social media platforms and what it is that we're doing here 🙂
It hasn't really been making international news, and even our German media have been lazy about reporting this - but I wanted to let you know that hundreds of thousands of Germans are out in the streets and towns, protesting against the right-wing extremists here in Germany.
I was out myself today, along with 15,000 others in my town, for Holocaust Memorial Day. 100,000 in Düsseldorf alone, plenty more across the entire country. More protests are planned for tomorrow.
@jbzfn
I've been using it for years. It's great. So many great features for the web and for your existing email if you choose to use it. Also they let you know in the search bar (with a red dot) if there's a security risk on the website you're visiting.
Plenty of settings to suit a person's needs.
"Is this what #Israel is? The tech outpost, the US ally, the beacon of democracy in the Middle East? A country that kills journalists [30] and writers in surgical strikes [31]. That forces doctors away from ICU babies, leaving them to die and rot in their incubators [32]. Whose snipers shoot children and grannies in the head [33]" – extraordinarily powerful and courageous essay by @paulbiggar . Read it and weep.
