Why are we so into campaign polls?

Sure, reporters – and readers – like a sense of what lies ahead, but polls are at best inaccurate and as we’ve seen in history, often wrong

@TheConversationUS without polls journalists would have to write thoughtful pieces about actual issues. This would take them longer which means more expensive and whoever's running the media company would get sad.

Funny how "How do we reach net zero?" never includes banning fossil fuels as soon as possible.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-58874518

Niall,
@Niall@mastodon.nz avatar

@ExtinctionR fossil fuel is <almost> banned from my life.
100% solar electricity, space heating and cooling 2014
100% EV 2018
100% electric water heating 2023
I also built my house this year and got 95%+ of the materials myself with my EV, used no diesel & only 0.6m3 of concrete.

It is totally possible to make big personal changes but government action would be so much better. It is also much cheaper in $$ long-term and again this is something a government should underwrite, not individuals.

chu, (edited ) to climate

In conversation w a friend, she was surprised when I said we won't have electricity after social collapse. She asked "why? What happens to electricity?"

I had to then explain that infrastructure needs people to maintain and if things fall apart, nobody will keep the generators going or the wires in check. She seemed surprised by this.

Is this why people don't seem worried about what's coming? They have no idea???

I was trying to hide my shock that I had to explain this to someone who isn't a child. I think I take too much for granted and assume too much of people's ability to be logical.

Now her obsession with social issues at the expense of #ClimateCrisis makes sense. I was always wondering how someone on the left would not care about collapse. I have tried to explain before that as much as I share her concerns about the many dire issues that do need dealing with, none of it matters if climate change causes collapse. Then we won't have social housing, or equity, or any of the other things she cares about. (she was even part of a group that protested demanding "affordable gas")

Her look of shock finally helped me realize that she has absolutely no idea what #ClimateCollapse means. No idea. I've been arguing with her all these years and she's had no idea.

I don't even know what to say.

There's no way she's the only one. Lots of well intentioned people say "yes climate is important but....".

I am here to tell you that none of those other issues will even exist in the face of climate and social collapse.

I don't know if the average person can even imagine the number of deaths that we are facing when the society we built loses electricity.

If you have a WordPress-powered blog, you can turn it into a Fediverse server and people will be able to follow the blog from Mastodon etc.

More info on how to do this here:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/wordpress-turning-your-blog-into-a-fediverse-server/

This works through the AcitvityPub for WordPress plug-in, which has just been updated to version 1.0.0:

The plug-in is by @pfefferle in association with #Automattic, one of the major players behind WordPress itself.

Workers: DO NOT OVERWORK YOURSELF to avoid getting laid off.

  • You’re damaging your life and health.
  • Your employer doesn’t actually notice (no, really, they don’t.)
  • Your behavior enables future mismanagement of resources.
  • When layoffs come, you’re gonna get laid off anyway.

Remember that a company’s job is to extract maximum work from you for minimum pay, so your job is to extract maximum pay for minimum work. Somewhere in the middle, both parties find an equilibrium that they agree on. Do not voluntarily modify your side of the bargain to your detriment.

Niall,
@Niall@mastodon.nz avatar

@drahardja yes.
I learnt this lesson straight out of uni, working my 'dream job' at Lotus & got laid off within a year. It hurt.
Since then I only work if I'm being paid. I don't do free overtime or let a job get to me. That's nearly 25 years ago(!) and if it's hurt my career then I haven't noticed.
Now I'm working for myself it's harder to be so strict but it's a different deal!
