I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon #Bookstodon #Scifi #ScienceFiction

@todwest @bookstodon thanks for the suggestion! I read that a long time ago. I'm looking for recent books, I have issues with a lot of the "classics."

@MythingPerson @bookstodon I love those book, I've read all of them!

@isaactly_s @bookstodon China Mieville is someone I haven't read who I'd like to try, thanks for the recommendation! I'll try Perdido Street Station, I just read the blurb and it sounds great!

@tkinias @bookstodon I read those last year and loved them. It was such a unique concept! I don't mind some military adjacent stories, just not books that are totally set on military ships and the focus is on war stories. Like I tried Scalzi's Old Man's War and couldn't really get into it.

@RogerBW thanks, I've read Becky Chambers and all the Murderbot books but haven't heard of those other authors, I'll look them up! I love finding more obscure authors that I've never heard of!

"The pile beside my bed never shrinks; at the bottom of the stack are books I've been planning to crack open for months. My shelves remain full of lingering aspirations," writes the Walrus's Michelle Cyca. She looks at the problem of unread books, and the difficulty in offloading our libraries. What do you do with your unwanted books?

@CultureDesk @bookstodon I read a lot of fiction but ran out of shelf space years ago so all my new fiction is ebooks. I do like some print nonfiction, so if I need to make room will donate books I probably won't read again to my library.

So @jcrabapple my new HEPA filter has arrived and I put it as close to my face as possible while I'm watching TV 😆 It would probably help if I dusted my house lol. Curious to see if it helps.

@ai6yr that's so interesting that bees find and occupy empty hives! And what's a spicy bee??

Holy shit. Thanks @pluralistic now I don't want to fly anymore 😱

Boeing's 787 "Dreamliner" is manufactured ... in a non-union shop in Charleston, South Carolina. At that shop, there is a cage full of defective parts that have been pulled from production because they are not airworthy.

Hundreds of parts from that Material Review Segregation Area (MRSA) were secretly pulled from that cage and installed on aircraft that are currently flying the world's skies.

speaking as a jew, it’s not antisemitic to call for the end of a genocide. it is antisemitic to use accusations of antisemitism as a cover for carrying out genocide

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@shekinahcancook @nevo @exchgr i definitely do not like Hamas and consider October 7 terrorism on the scale of 9/11. But I also think Netanyahu's response has been too much--to wipe out all of Gaza? I am not sure if what is happening there fits the description of genocide. It does fit the description for war crimes. And anyone who is ok with Netanyahu killing 10,000+ children and destroying every university and hospital -- well I feel sorry for people with so little compassion in their hearts.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@shekinahcancook @nevo by whatever means? To me that means you're ok with killing every single person in gaza just to make sure current members of hamas are killed. That is so incredibly short sighted. I mean seriously do you not remember the Iraq war? Great terrorist recruiting. Average people in Gaza, especially children, have no say about what Hamas does. Of course they should release hostages. But I'd be surprised if many are still alive considering the devastation.

So which would you prefer: to be: European or American?

Americans work longer hours, but are richer (well at least some are);

Europeans work less, earn less, but live longer, are happier & mostly in better health

The Right claim working shorter hours & retiring early is not sustainable, but if Public Debt/GDP is your metric then the US performs worse.

Certainly Americans can buy more stuff, but this increases their environmental impact...

social choices?

I'm not sure who that old coot is photo bombing this cliff dwelling, but I saw him free climb down into the canyon from the mesa top. Silly old guy must have went up the wrong canyon looking for this ruin, climbed out, walked across the mesa, & then climbed down into this, the right canyon with its really cool cultural site. There's rock art decorating the canyon walls, pottery shards, 800-year-old corn cobs, & pressure flakes everywhere!

Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

#Budget #UKPolitics This article by Gary Stevenson is so good, please read every word of it.

“Whatever Jeremy Hunt says, traders know the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer. And they’re paid millions to bet on it.”

This is what the world is - it is run by a minute elite for a minute elite and the rest of us, the masses, the natural world, we just don’t count. It is a #TragedyOftheNonCommons (will reshare my own piece on this below 1/n)

@pvonhellermannn I spent three hours yesterday at a rural Tennessee courthouse with a lot of other people trying to get my property tax assessment changed. Our property taxes went up 50% last year, and everyone's homes in the entire state went up ~40% probably just to get more $ from us. People in line with me said food, health insurance, healthcare, cars, car insurance, homeowners insurance, etc are now unaffordable, and new state taxes are the latest effort to destroy the middle class.
