Old friends. Many miles and rocky paths we have traveled. We have seen landscapes hundreds of millions of years in the making.
We have traveled through sun scorched rock, icy slopes, and glassy shards. I have doffed you to protect you from stream crossings, and worn you through them when I could not.
Over decades, your utility has barely faded. My capacity to test your limits has been reduced.
I used to follow a "Microckscopia" accont on the bird site that publish these images of polarized light shone through thin slices of many different kinds of rocks. Any chance you heard of that account, or know anyone doing that?
The silica gel cement that permeated the sands dried out to form opal-CT. The white opal-CT can be seen filling the pore space between sand grains in this magnified view. It many cases the opal cement is clear, but can be stained yellow by ferric oxides (Heinrich 1984). #geology#archaeology#rocks
So the Mineral of the Year 2024 and Fossil of the Year 2024 vote in Hungary has started. It is one of my favorite things 😄 The campaign tends to get heated between geologists and crystal enthusiasts...
Contenders for MotY:

I know which ones I'm voting for. Curious what you all think 😊
Had to go site walk a quarry I didn’t know existed in our town for a permit renewal yesterday. Most of our bedrock is dead boring, but this was a delight. Look at those layers! #rocks#geology#CT
This is my first photo of the Milky Way. I was shocked that the Milky Way can be seen with the naked eye. 🌌 👀 I took the photo in Teide National Park in Tenerife, which is one of the least light-polluted places on earth. Enjoy! I will post more night photos. 😊
This is the first sentence of an #Axios article about #TraderJoes. Later in the article, it says, “#TraderJoe's is urging consumers not to eat the recalled products.” Exactly who is eating the #rocks, #insects and #metal at Trader Joe’s?
On a scale of 1-10, how obsessed with Washington's geology are you?
We've got a brand new season of Nick on the Rocks, with Central Washington University geologist Nick Zentner, premiering December 7! You won't want to miss this new season!
Decent size piece of white & beige novaculite from Arkansas, but some internal fractures. Haven't attempted to do any flintknapping with it yet. #archaeology#flintknapping#rocks
Stream-battered red jasper cobble. The negative flake scars are most likely from stream transport since there is a lot of wear & damage.
No idea where I got this from. Would be nice slabbed for cabochons or beads.
Red jasper was a preferred material for beads & pendants all over the world. The Poverty Point culture in North America is known for their owl pendants & grasshopper beads. #rocks#archaeology
Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park (5/13/2023). Monument Valley is part of the Colorado Plateau a geomorphic province of buttes, mesas, volcanoes, deep canyons, & stunning rock colors. Reds & oranges predominate in the geology of the region due to oxidation of the iron rich rocks. There are also numerous fossils, petrified forests, & enumerable cultural sites within the ~336,700km^2 province.
Mount Etna in the background, a huge crater in the foreground. I intentionally overexposed this frame when shooting to bring out the beautiful colors of this scene. Catania, Sicily, Italy 🇮🇹
