These Lumex 1602 character LCDs (LCM-S01602DSR/C) I found in #ewaste have the polarity of pins 1 and 2 swapped when compared to the more typical Hitachi HD44780U 1602 displays commonly used in #Arduino projects
Found a discarded Raspberry Pi 2B in the #ewaste. The enclosure is missing its lid. Probably was part of someone's forgotten #STEM project who left the company years ago. They were quite forceful on both of the ZIF sockets. The tabs had been broken off completely -- only managed to find one of them. Wonder what other hardware was damaged. #RaspberryPi
A really interesting little device that could reduce #ewaste...that maybe came a few years too late to actually do so. Still, "turn your #SLR into a #DSLR" is a pretty compelling value prop.
Struggling to find any useful advice on how to dispose of a swollen phone battery in the UK.
Gov website just links to local council, which has no information on recycling damaged and potentially dangerous batteries.
The nearest recycling centre in walking distance that may potentially accept it does not allow pedestrians, so would have to get two buses to a centre that does.
It's no wonder most folk just chuck it in the bin (and maybe cause fires)
Anybody here on the #Fediverse have recommendations on how to “resuscitate” an #Asus#TF700T? It still works, but obviously unupgradable (software-wise) by official means, and slow as molasses. I understand that the the device is actually under-specced in terms of internal storage speed and RAM amount, but maybe #askFedi knows about some lightweight option that would allow it to give its best?
Help me avoid some more #eWaste.
Google Pixel 8 gets 7 years of guaranteed software updates (Security Fixes + Feature Drops)
What kept them from working eWaste and obsolescence problem apparently were supply chain issues because someone downstream does not want to support their perfectly working hardware with new software

Emissions from computing are apparently higher than for air travel, and that’ll only go up in the coming decades.
“As a society we need to start treating computational resources as finite and precious, to be utilised only when necessary, and as effectively as possible. We need frugal computing: achieving our aims with less energy and material.”
You do realize that thise ASIC-Miners can't do anything but mine #Bitcoin :bitcoin: and in their very nature centralize #capital on a blockchain harder than any #PrintingPress does for #fiat?
Thus these create a shitton of #eWaste that isn't really recyleable!
#RightToRepair has no cannier, more dedicated adversary than #apple whose most innovative work is dreaming up new ways to sneakily sabotage repair while claiming to be a caring environmental steward, a lie that covers up the mountains of #ewaste that Apple dooms our descendants to wade through.

Happened to see this on someone's Discord about me and I feel like I should have many thoughts on "AGAINST RIGHT TO REPAIR".
They had me until I saw the whole "AGAINST RIGHT TO REPAIR" thing :P. is this a pure Apple fanboy who defends Apple's every move? Just wait until all the newer iPhones have to use USB C
Due to Apple's #iPhone#connector change, we have decided to review our collection of #wires, small peripherals, and other items surrounding our #electronics.
Much pictured here is being organized. We determined that we have enough:
four-wheeled cargo #ebikes, sometimes referred to as #biketrucks or #bikevans, haven’t been legal in #NYC due to local ordinances that limit #cargobikes to three wheels and a maximum width of 36 inches.
It boggles the mind that destruction of thousands of functional non-faulty drives isn't accompanied by proportionate fines for the creation of unnecessary #EWaste caused by inadequate precautions leading to the need to even generate said e-waste in the first place.
Even if the shredding company recycles the drive components, that's still magnitudes more wasteful than reusing the drives directly when they still work fine.
And most such components require a lot of reprocessing when shredded.
"But Bitcoin is a great way to monetize excess renewables"
No, this was never true. If you make a capital investment in a mining rig, then you want that rig making you money 24hrs, not just when the rest of the grid is not consuming renewables.
@volkris@sollee I don't think #privacy should be the reason for or against it. #Bitcoin :bitcoin: and #Ethereum's inefficiencies make them completely useless and gross waste of energy in the size of Argentina when it comes to it's power consumption.
There is no legitimate reason to use or support #ASIC-based #Mining or even accepting #Cryptocurrencies that do so as even ignoring the wastefulness of #Energy they create far more excess #pollution with their #eWaste aka. once the Hardware is old.
Scientists have devised a method to upcycle lithium-ion batteries and expired solar panels into new solar cells. The method recovers valuable materials from the waste and converts them into perovskite solar cells, which are cheaper and more efficient than silicon-based ones. This could reduce the environmental impact of electronic waste and boost the renewable energy sector.
can anyone give me a compelling reason not to get a Brocade ICX6430-24 to replace my Catalyst 3750G-24TS-S, given the power supply in it is slowly dying?
the brocade is only an L2 switch rather than an L3 like the catalyst, but I can account for that
otherwise specs are largely the same, but the Brocade uses 36W max rather than 100+ idling
@izaya if you pay €0,62/kWh like is the basic rate in Germany, you'll yeet that old piece of Cisco junk right on #eNay if not the #eWaste recycler in your juristiction...
@lauteshirn@marix I understand your frustration, but Fairphone is a phone that stands for repairability. Which comes with a costs of adding a bit more weight. Sure, Fairphone could just glue it all together but that will miss the whole point of Fairphone! I find the durability & repairability just so much more important in the current world of e-waste!
