Now that I've had it a couple weeks, I'm an even bigger fan of my new modular, repairable laptop from #Framework: lightweight, keyboard is a dream, comparable/better to MS Surfaces I've had (keyboard went bad).

BONUS: with the intro of this new series, they've put the older model on sale!

It's a million small choices like this that will help us reduce waste (particularly ewaste) & live more sustainably on the planet.

I don't throw away #compactfluorescent lamps but "burn" them in my #turtle dwellings. They give off sufficient light and provide some heat as well. Currently one CFL has been consumed, have a box full of them. #ewaste #environment

What does it mean to “burn” them?

Do you know when you have hung on to a mobile phone for too long? When you get a quote to sell it and the phone is worth $2 USD. Sleep well Pixel2. I'll find something for you to do in the #homelab.

@dthacker9 I would love to use my stash of old phones to do something productive in my homelab.

I was trying to get deployed on a few old phones using but I gave up in the end. 😅

@ai6yr maybe they fired the team that worked on the software and they're going to shut down the servers rather than bother to do anything that costs money.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@douglasvb Oh, I KNOW how that works, just saying if you were doing it right you'd not e-waste it all, and you'd make them usable to someone instead. (Of course, if it doesn't make the company money, they won't do it)

We want a future of repairable gadgets and less ewaste.
5-7 years of software support doesn't mean anything if we can't keep the hardware running well for 7 years.
Glad to see iFixit didn't go quiet on this one.

https://www.ifixit.com/News/96162/were-ending-our-samsung-collaboration

I've been trying to highlight Samsung's scummy business practices for a couple years now, but when they can't even make a support contract work with iFixit, it's a REAL bad look.

Ahslan,

@SomeGadgetGuy 100% agree. I was mainly attracted by the size of the normal s24, the software support and the non-pixel hardware lol

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

@Ahslan it's sad how there seems to be fewer and fewer options for a nice regular sized phone.

Malaysians buy 1 million per MONTH. This is absolutely insane. There should be no reason to "upgrade" any phone that is less than 5 years old. It's just marketing and forced

I purchased a domain today in the hopes of starting something I've wanted to do for a long time. I hate waste, especially #ewaste and I noticed a few of my local community members in dire need of computers but can't afford to get them. I decided that I'm going to try to get folks to donate their old hardware (desktops and laptops mostly) that are 5-7 years old (so 64bit works smoothly) and install #Linux on them and donate those recycled machines to the folks in need. More info coming soon!

ABC: E-waste is overflowing landfills. At one sprawling Vietnam market, workers recycle some of it https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/waste-overflowing-landfills-sprawling-vietnam-market-workers-recycle-109892591 #ewaste #electronics

John,
@John@socks.masto.host avatar

@ai6yr I have seen some YouTubes by some guys who seem to have a fun and useful business. They run those weekend recycling drop-offs, probably with a little cash flow from the government and the organizer, and then they sort it all. The best goes to eBay, the intermediate goes to materials handlers, but probably the worst is sent in bulk overseas.

phpete,
@phpete@mastodon.coffee avatar

@ai6yr pretty much the only complaint I have about my local landfill is their 'no scavenging' rule.

Their electronics are in a completely separate location from all other waste & I've seen So Much that I'd walk out with if not for that rule.

They even that section under digital surveillance.

It's bizarre.

I've only lucked out once - someone was dropping off a stack of Cisco switches years ago and I asked him to put them in my truck bed instead of the waste pile.

Pure luck.

Das Gerät wurde nicht-mal 3 Jahre vor dem Enddatum bestellt.

Das ist alles so erbärmlich.

@drazraeltod@chaos.social avatar

Yay!
