Now that I've had it a couple weeks, I'm an even bigger fan of my new modular, repairable laptop from #Framework: lightweight, keyboard is a dream, comparable/better to MS Surfaces I've had (keyboard went bad).

BONUS: with the intro of this new series, they've put the older model on sale!

It's a million small choices like this that will help us reduce waste (particularly ewaste) & live more sustainably on the planet.

We want a future of repairable gadgets and less ewaste.
5-7 years of software support doesn't mean anything if we can't keep the hardware running well for 7 years.
Glad to see iFixit didn't go quiet on this one.

I've been trying to highlight Samsung's scummy business practices for a couple years now, but when they can't even make a support contract work with iFixit, it's a REAL bad look.

I purchased a domain today in the hopes of starting something I've wanted to do for a long time. I hate waste, especially #ewaste and I noticed a few of my local community members in dire need of computers but can't afford to get them. I decided that I'm going to try to get folks to donate their old hardware (desktops and laptops mostly) that are 5-7 years old (so 64bit works smoothly) and install #Linux on them and donate those recycled machines to the folks in need. More info coming soon!

A solution for the #ewaste nightmare #Apple's #iCloud activation lock has created:

  1. Partnered ewaste vendor requests unlock
  2. Apple emails iTunes account
  3. Owner releases device, or if no response, 90 day countdown starts
  4. Still no response? Device is auto unlocked.

You don't need a new computer for up-to-date software ... just the right software!

Come to #Umweltfestival 2024 in #Berlin to learn about the role of independent #FreeSoftware in the sustainable use of hardware.

🗓️ Sunday 28 April, 11-19h
📍 Straße des 17. Juni (Brandenburg Gate)

#KDEEco together with #FSFE (@fsfe) and Bits & Bäume (@bitsundbaeume_berlin) will be there! Some in the #GNOME and #postmarketOS community may be joining as well :)

We will have old, otherwise unsupported #computers and #smartphones for visitors to try, as well as some new ones, all running #FreeSoftware.

The oldest, Dell Latitude D600, would have become #eWaste in 2010. If it were human, today it could legally drink alcohol in the USA ... it is that old and, with a little patience, still quite usable!

Come by to try it out :)

I just received my new work laptop ( Pro M3, ~€2000) just to discover that it does not support dual-monitor output despite having multiple video ports.

For a feature that even the cheapest laptops (and older MacBooks) have had for years, Apple now asks you to buy the MacBook Pro M3 Pro (€2500) or M3 Max (€4000).

This is essentially €2000 . Not so "pro" after all.

Brett_E_Carlock,

@tuxdevices
That is absurd. I can not believe it... I figured maybe a dongle, but not at all?

Even my objectively awful GeoBook-120 I paid $120US for three years ago on an Intel N3450 would do up to four displays if there were more video out ports because that is what the chipset limit is.

Can you tell if this is an OS-level lock that can get patched, or is it lower like firmware?

Found a really large disposable in the grass. It seems to allow one of 4 flavours to be selected. But it is still a single-use device. There is no USB-C port for recharging the battery.

Single use disposable vape about the size of a hair spray can and coloured orange brown, with a choice of 4 flavours. You select the flavour by rotating the base and the mouth piece.

I wish smartphones were designed with batteries that pop out. So when the battery gets old you just pop in a new one, like replacing a battery in a flashlight or something similar. It would be less expensive for the consumer and also more environmentally friendly. Both of those things are probably why it will never happen but I can still dream. 😂

: "The phone or computer you’re reading this on may not be long for this world. Maybe you’ll drop it in water, or your dog will make a chew toy of it, or it’ll reach obsolescence. If you can’t repair it and have to discard it, the device will become e-waste, joining an alarmingly large mountain of defunct TVs, refrigerators, washing machines, cameras, routers, electric toothbrushes, headphones. This is “electrical and electronic equipment,” aka EEE—anything with a plug or battery. It’s increasingly out of control.

As economies develop and the consumerist lifestyle spreads around the world, e-waste has turned into a full-blown environmental crisis. People living in high-income countries own, on average, 109 EEE devices per capita, while those in low-income nations have just four. A new UN report finds that in 2022, humanity churned out 137 billion pounds of e-waste—more than 17 pounds for every person on Earth—and recycled less than a quarter of it.

That also represents about $62 billion worth of recoverable materials, like iron, copper, and gold, hitting e-waste landfills each year. At this pace, e-waste will grow by 33 percent by 2030, while the recycling rate could decline to 20 percent." https://www.wired.com/story/e-waste-recycling-cant-keep-up-precious-metals/
