I just received my new work laptop ( Pro M3, ~€2000) just to discover that it does not support dual-monitor output despite having multiple video ports.

For a feature that even the cheapest laptops (and older MacBooks) have had for years, Apple now asks you to buy the MacBook Pro M3 Pro (€2500) or M3 Max (€4000).

This is essentially €2000 . Not so "pro" after all.

@CerebralHawks it's definitely a MacBook Pro M3 and not an Air M3... which is confusingly is also not a MacBook Pro M3 Pro

@Brett_E_Carlock apparently the M3 chip doesn't have the hardware for it

Retro; the customizable clock widget is now available on Flathub in v2

What's new:

• 24/12h support (follows GNOME Settings)
• Energy usage optimizations
• Better support for round clocks
• Controls moved out of the way

What do you think of the floating header bar?

A screenshot of Retro. It shows a round clock with a transparent background and powered by white digital segments.

@sonny the floating header bar is so cute i wish it was upstream!

I didn't turn off my laptop since my screencast demo at Berlin, and realized i walked away with a piece of @cas 's display with me, forever :ablobcatbongo:

Some impressions from the GNOME 46 release party at @offline yesterday. Thanks everyone for joining, it was great 🫶

Serious question: Which do you consider to be the least unethical among very-big-tech companies (let's say top 10 only), and why?

No judgement, just for statistical purposes! :ablobcatattention:

By popular demand we're moving the GNOME 46 Berlin release party by one week, to Saturday April 6th and Sunday 7th.

Everything else remains the same, we're still going to do hacking, cooking, and talks at @offline on Saturday and more focused hacking on Sunday :)

@tbernard @offline See you then!

#GNOME must be on some ancient curse. I bought my laptop in 2018 when 3.28 was out and it was quite laggy at the time. Then it became progressively faster with every new release, so as the laptop gets older, it feels newer and gets more features.

I thought computers were meant to feel like bricks within years, and that UIs had to grow inexplicably heavier in spite of no changes in their technologies? /s

tuxdevices,
@tuxdevices@fosstodon.org avatar

@tinyrabbit I for sure agree that GNOME is quite heavy, but are you sure it became heavier in your experience only in recent releases?

Startups love to claim that art and creativity is obsolete thanks to AI, in comment sections as well as in real life.

But they are nothing more than aggressive microwave salesmen walking into restaurants to bother clients and convince them that chefs have been replaced by their magic tool

tuxdevices,
@tuxdevices@fosstodon.org avatar

Maybe the only job it can replace is making fluffy reports and slides dipped in trendy buzzwords, which is basically all these businesses do

tuxdevices, to Nvidia
@tuxdevices@fosstodon.org avatar

may be artificially reducing your laptop's performance if you're using

Since driver version 530.41, NVIDIA has locked out some laptop GPUs out of their maximum power limit to a lower value (source - Arch Wiki). With this driver, they also removed the ability to manually change the power limit using nvidia-smi so you cannot change it back as you could before.

Some proprietary streaming apps such as Prime Video seem to work well on #Waydroid over #postmarketOS. There are still bugs with media playback clocks sometimes, but the streaming itself is flawless.

Having support (mDNS?) as well would make it perfect, but I guess that is more of a network/firewall issue than a major blocker

@Lulukaros to postmarketOS? It's hard to suggest because it depends on who of the developers owns what phone, but it can be quite fun to port it yourself :)

tuxdevices,
@tuxdevices@fosstodon.org avatar

@Lulukaros no pressure! do you know what SoC your phone runs on?

tuxdevices,
@tuxdevices@fosstodon.org avatar

@Lulukaros Hmm, that will be a tough one. No mainline support for that chip exists yet and development does not seem active
