Trying something for this app: https://flathub.org/apps/com.jeffser.Alpaca

Side note: the app works surprisingly well on my fairly old laptop, I'm kind of impressed.

Whoever says icon themes work has not worked on icon themes for 25 years.

tbernard,
@tbernard@mastodon.social avatar

@danirabbit @jimmac I don't think the spec being old is relevant, the problem is that there are barely any apps that don't have at least a few custom icons or non-semantic uses of existing icons.

There's just no way to swap out all icons at scale without a designer in the loop. It's the classic app/theme QA matrix that makes theming a bad idea elsewhere too :)

As part of the GNOME @sovtechfund project we've been working on improving notifications in GNOME (and the wider free desktop) 🔔✨

In this blog post @jsparber gives an update on the current state, what's already landed in 46, and what's coming in the near future!

@adz So Lukas got sick and it's too short notice to plan a new program for tuesday so I had to cancel this time.

But I just got a message that there are a bunch of GNOME folks who wanted to have a discussion instead. Can we still use the space?

@praxeology @liaizon @adz @dantescanline Yes, still public, you can mention myself, @sonny, @cas, @rmader, and @verdre :)

OMG, is this what I think it is? Is it a universal search trough the menu items in applications, like that old Ubuntu HUD thing!?

I've been wanting that ever since Ubuntu introduced it, and then unfortunately got rid of it for for me unknown reasons. It's so extremely useful and a huge time saver! "Where was that thing again?" "Does this app have…?" No more questions like that, no more hunting, just search!

I really hope this is coming to soon! Where can I read more? @tbernard

tbernard,
@tbernard@mastodon.social avatar

@forteller We've had mockups for this for like 5 years, just needs someone to implement the plumbing for scoped, global app actions 😅

What if "software repair" was a system feature?

Every app comes with its source and flatpak manifest, and there's a "Repair" button in the window context menu that opens it in Builder.

When you're done with your repair it's easy to set a different name/icon (so it shows up as a separate app in the system), install it locally, or share it as a flatpak bundle.

tbernard,
@tbernard@mastodon.social avatar

@alatiera Fair, repair is probably not the actual framing you'd use in the UI :D

Maybe something like "Remix"?

Manuel is working hard on a new version of Apostrophe! It's the long-awaited port to GTK4, Libadwaita, and the other awesome new stuff ✨

The new version is a significant overhaul, so testing and filing bugs is appreciated!

Install the beta by adding the Flathub Beta repo:

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub-beta https://flathub.org/beta-repo/flathub-beta.flatpakrepo

And the install the app:

flatpak install flatpak-beta org.gnome.gitlab.somas.Apostrophe

New Flathub home page coming along nicely thanks to @razze - note the new tabbed section below the banners at the top 👀

Also, if you haven't updated your app metadata yet, there's still a bit of time to do it before we release banners this weekend :)

@danirabbit @razze Thank you for leading the way with elementary! I don't think anyone was paying attention to appstream metadata quality before you started the appcenter initiative :)

ARGH! I'm in the market for a new desktop (my W11 PC is getting old). Even though I've used , , and various distros, I'm feeling pulled to get a Mac Studio.

I know, I know.

It's just that all of the well designed utilities are on the Mac. I'm NOT a fan of Apple, but Apple Devs just do a great job. I've rarely looked for a utility and found something better on W11 or Linux (they are usually worse)

I wish Linux utilities were just a bit more polished...

tbernard,
@tbernard@mastodon.social avatar

@scottjenson Just curious, what are your favorite utility apps on macOS?

tbernard,
@tbernard@mastodon.social avatar

@scottjenson Interesting, so mostly things around image manipulation?

It's true that that area is a blind spot for us at the moment. We have tons of really nice utilities for text and file stuff in/around GNOME Circle, but not many good image tools.

tbernard,
@tbernard@mastodon.social avatar

@scottjenson
I suspect this is at least in part a developer tools issue (we don't have an easy to use image canvas library), but I wonder if part of it is also people not being aware of what the macOS tools can do.

It could be super valuable to document some of the best apps/features in macOS image apps in more detail, to inspire people to build things in that direction, e.g. as a blog post :)

Hear me out: Multiline seek bar that's actually proportional to the length of the track

tbernard,
@tbernard@mastodon.social avatar

@hbons That'd be sweet, but I guess it'd require some kind of fancy LLM stuff to recognize?

If we did something like that we should probably look into auto-transcription as well, and maybe a way to navigate the waveform via the transcript 🤔

Lots of apps have been adding brand colors, so we're getting closer to being able to launch featured banners on Flathub!

If you haven't done it yet for your app, here are the docs: https://docs.flathub.org/docs/for-app-authors/metainfo-guidelines/quality-guidelines/#brand-colors

And here's a fancy new previewer for trying out colors: https://docs.flathub.org/banner-preview

Just noticed today that MacOS puts a little bit of resistance when you are pushing a window towards another, or when you align them on the sides/edges.

Makes it so that it is easy to get your windows aligned or perfectly side-by-side.

Not sure when this first came up, but it is such a nice touch.

tbernard,
@tbernard@mastodon.social avatar

@siracusa @Migueldeicaza Funny, we had this in GNOME until like last year, and switched the behavior to snapping when you press Ctrl only. IIRC the rationale was that it kept tripping people up that windows can randomly jump around if you move them slowly. I wonder if the macOS implementation is smarter somehow?

What I find odd about people arguing for just giving every app network access is that we don't do this for anything else.

Generally security means thinking about worst case scenarios and actual technical capabilities. If you go with the "but it's fine for most apps" line of reasoning you might as well give everyone access to the whole file system, because "most apps aren't gonna steal all your files"...

tbernard,
@tbernard@mastodon.social avatar

If we do look at technical capabilities, network is not only a problem by itself, but it's especially problematic in combination with other things.

Network by itself: Can get your IP address
Network + location: Can track your location history
Network + file access: Can steal your files
Network + mic/camera: Can surveil your environment

All of the above is of course even worse if the app is proprietary.
