ARGH! I'm in the market for a new desktop (my W11 PC is getting old). Even though I've used #Mac, #Win, and various #Linux distros, I'm feeling pulled to get a Mac Studio.

I know, I know.

It's just that all of the well designed utilities are on the Mac. I'm NOT a fan of Apple, but Apple Devs just do a great job. I've rarely looked for a utility and found something better on W11 or Linux (they are usually worse)

I wish Linux utilities were just a bit more polished...

@scottjenson Just curious, what are your favorite utility apps on macOS?

@tbernard @scottjenson The Unarchiver used to be one of the first I installed on a fresh OS back before Apple supported more archive formats.

@tbernard The first one I trot out is Mac Preview for it's swiss army knife of image tools. The background remover is worth it alone (however with LLM+image manipulation that could soon be history

GIF Brewery, Alfred, and Acorn also come to mind

And yes Finder. I know! It doesn't many programmer tasks poorly but for basic see, move, organize, it works really well for me (Win11 has improved significantly and I assume Linux has as well)

@scottjenson Interesting, so mostly things around image manipulation?

It's true that that area is a blind spot for us at the moment. We have tons of really nice utilities for text and file stuff in/around GNOME Circle, but not many good image tools.

@scottjenson
I suspect this is at least in part a developer tools issue (we don't have an easy to use image canvas library), but I wonder if part of it is also people not being aware of what the macOS tools can do.

It could be super valuable to document some of the best apps/features in macOS image apps in more detail, to inspire people to build things in that direction, e.g. as a blog post :)

@tbernard My dream #opensource project would be to work on a very simple "Image Utility" for Linux. It's NOT an image editor but a cropper/sizer/annotator/background remover. Simple and clean. If there is anything out there, please let me know if I could help!
