Have you ever recycled something that was still working or repairable? The answer is likely yes, based on the results of our study with West London Waste Authority.
Ugo speaks to Emma Beal about the state of recycling and reuse in the UK and what we can do to fix the e-waste issue 🔧 ♻️
🔋EU: Smartphones Must Have User-Replaceable Batteries by 2027 | @PCMag
"For "portable batteries" used in devices such as smartphones, tablets, and cameras, consumers must be able to "easily remove and replace them" themselves. This will require a drastic design rethink by manufacturers. Currently, the majority of phones and tablets seal the battery away and require specialist tools and knowledge to access and replace safely" #EU #Climate #eWaste #RightToRepair https://www.pcmag.com/news/eu-smartphones-must-have-user-replaceable-batteries-by-2027
Acrylic cube with flashing multicolour LED on a PCB with 3 button cells sealed inside the cube. It is activated when dropped in water - a pair of screws make contact with traces on the PCB so it can be triggered by reduced resistance of liquid bridging the contacts
Had to destroy one wall of the cube to extract the button cells (which had already begun to corrode) and PCB
EU: Samsung and other brands may be forced to bring back phones with removable backs so that we can easily replace batteries
Gone are the days when we could easily take off the smartphone’s battery and replace it with a new one. You didn’t need a heat gun or a specialised tool to pop open the back of your phone, and you could easily do that with your fingernails. It seems like we c ...continues
⎧ Western Digital faces accusations of using WDDA to try to push people to buy new drives prematurely. Interestingly, three years is also how long the warranty period is for some of the affected drives. However, some of the affected drives, like the Red Pro, have a five-year warranty ⎭

Fuck it, I'll install NixOS on every machine at this grammar school.

I wouldn't mind overpaying for those landfilling airpods as long as they are from Apple.
I can't even wait to be trapped by its VR ecosystem. If I die inside that, I'll get resurrected as an AI union busting chatbot directed by Kojima himself.
Yesterday on TimeMachiner I revealed the extensive e-waste tragedy that is the Chromebook ecosystem. Perfectly working machines become doorstops all because of a literal Expiration Date, costing school districts millions of dollars.
Some components of our devices wear out (e.g. batteries) or get damaged (e.g. screens) more easily than others. But a problem with a part shouldn't entail throwing out the whole.
Moreover, letting electronics repair become a dying art would be a huge cost to society's technical prowess and resilience.
Fairphone – the company whose easily repairable, eco-friendly phone we really wish we could afford – has just created easily repairable, eco-friendly wireless over-ear #headphones
I have an #eWaste problem that I would like to solve: two #dell laptops that refuse to boot. One lights up for a couple of seconds, before shutting down again. The other seems completely dead, even after replacing the battery. The laptops are otherwise in decent conditions and I would like to revitalize them for my kids as they come of age.
Actually, joking aside, I'm now wondering if I could hire @foone to fix my #eWaste problem: send them the laptop, pay for expenses and labor, get back the two laptops restored in working order and a nice Fediverse thread where they complain about the state in which I left them. Counterpoints: stuff is probably too recent for @foone taste, and shipping there and back is probably going to cost me an arm and a leg.
My phone is the Moto G Power 2020. I got it on sale after the 2021 was released because all the reviews noted how the 2021 version was a significant downgrade from the 2020 version. Wild! I don't know how the 2022+ versions compare, but I want to wring out as much life from this thing as possible.
