Only three humans have ever witnessed an eclipse of the Sun by the Earth. It happened while the Apollo 12 crew was returning home from the Moon, on November 21, 1969.
Fortunately, the astronauts filmed the moment so you can share in the experience.
Don’t know if it’s true, but I have just heard from my sib Tidy that “a state of emergency” has been declared for Austin the weekend of the eclipse. She says so many fucking weirdos are heading down here to stare at the sun through cardboard gas station glasses that the population is expected to DOUBLE. My weekend farmhand has already told me she won’t be coming in because she fears the traffic. IN JOHNSON CITY TEXAS, POP 1627. I cannot get behind this. Stay home. I beg of you. #Eclipse
It is 6:17 AM and there is already a stream of traffic heading north. I am just thankful that we didn’t do anything stupid yesterday and that the dog is not stressing out like he has in the past.
August 2017 solar eclipse traffic, in a nutshell... apparently turned some routes into hours and hours long traffic jams. #solar#eclipse#solareclipse#traffic
Cool map showing the date of the most recent total eclipse for every point in Indiana. Made by the Holcomb Observatory & Planetarium at Butler University.
Great concept, and I'm wondering if anyone has seen a similar map for a larger area, ideally an interactive map for the entire world where you can see the year of the last eclipse wherever you are. The data is available, so surely someone has made such a map?
I am so, so excited for those of you who get to see the total #Eclipse today. If any of you want to reply to this with a detailed accounting of your experience and feelings, you will have a new internet friend.
I saw the #eclipse in totality! It was one of the most arresting things I’ve ever seen.
There was a small crowd at the park we settled down in. As the sun faded, people began to applaud. That quickly erupted into a roar of shouts & cries of excitement as the sun transitioned to totality. Beyond special.

If you have the chance to see the upcoming solar #SolarEclipse on April 8, go for it! Even if you've seen an annular #eclipse or an almost total one, the difference between that and a fully total one is like night and day –– pun intended!
Here's a shot I snapped of the 2019 eclipse from ESO's La Silla Observatory in #Chile. I vividly remember seeing the #Moon 's shadow crawling towards us from the Pacific Ocean. Unforgettable!
Here in Indianapolis, we had a totality around 3pm EST. The bird chatter was deafening all afternoon around the feeders, but once totality hit, it was dead silent (not one peep) until the sun came back. And the temperature dropped about 10 degrees. #eclipse#TotalSolarEclipse#HoosierMast
A bit late with this but last week I travelled with @erin and @ashley to Amherst, Ohio to try to shoot the Solar Eclipse! The entire endeavor was pretty poorly planned, but I think we got some pretty great shots out of it.
