As the rain began to fall yesterday the hummingbirds celebrated and immediately began primping and preening ☺️

I've just seen a hummingbird tongue in reality. Little guy was doing that licking-your-lips thing birds do when cleaning, but hummingbirds have looooong tongues so it's very silly.

Not sure how the rest of my morning is going to top this. 🐦 🎶

If you've not seen hummingbird tongues, it's worth looking em up, they're extremely silly.

This redstart crouches against the wall and does not try to flee when approached. I suspect it is a young one that has just fledged.

Are there a bird experts here who know whats wrong with it? @wurzelmann or @Kuestentroete maybe?

White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos)

This pelican is about to land in the Calcasieu Ship Channel, Cameron Parish Louisiana. Where are large group of white pelicans were gathered.

"American White Pelicans cooperate when feeding. Sometimes, large groups gather in wetlands. They coordinate their swimming to drive schooling fish toward the shallows. The pelicans can then easily scoop up these corralled fish from the water." - allaboutbirds.org

Also, I always get #ravens and #crows mixed up. What #birds are these?

I was lucky enough to meet this fledgling barn swallow a few days ago.

Not only is it adorable, but it illustrates the remarkable wing geometry of these spectacular precision fliers. Look at that long sweeping wing!

You have to see this two-minute video of a bald eagle release. If you ever wondered how big they are, this will answer your question!

Be ungovernable, like birds who make nests OUT OF ANTI-BIRD SPIKES. A new study describes resourceful Dutch & Belgian corvids besting evil architecture by stealing metal anti-bird strips and using them like thorny twigs, to construct their homes.

Like thorns, the spikes may protect their nests from predators.

Lead author Auke-Florian Hiemstra wrote an epic 🧵 about his research that's worth a read: https://twitter.com/AukeFlorian/status/1678703433900064773

Hmmm ... what will I ramble on about this morning? How about car seats? Do you remember vinal car seats? They were the thing for years. I wonder if they still make vinal car seats. A fashionable car seat back in the day, was black tuck and roll vinal car seats in a souped-up car. I suppose vinal was popular because it looked like leather. I only dreamed of getting something like that done to my old cars, but they had vinal seats ... cracked vinal, but they were vinal :). That was the problem with vinal, after a while, it cracked revealing the foam stuffing. I don't want to forget the torn cloth ceiling liners in the old cars.

This is an image of an osprey that I took at Gulfport, Mississippi. It didn't come out very well. But here it is anyway.

Today's unexpected discovery.

A mallard duck's arse makes quite a delightful pattern. I think this is quite lovely.

Hello Toronto

Well, I'm a Dodgers fan, but I know there are lots of blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) fans out there. The only baseball teams I can think of named after birds are the Blue Jays and the Orioles ... oh there are the Cardinals. I'll post a cardinal tomorrow.

"The Blue Jay frequently mimics the calls of hawks, especially the Red-shouldered Hawk. These calls may provide information to other jays that a hawk is around or may be used to deceive other species into believing a hawk is present." - allaboutbirds.org

People who complain about wild singing so hard in the morning - are not my friends. I'm DELIGHTED about early morning bird songs!

Their bird calls YellTell me - We are happy in our habitat here! It's another day we are alive!

Their early morning bird songs, remind me of the importance of feeling of being able to enjoy another morning, another day, to relish in the fact I'm still alive & able to receive many opportunities that the dead no longer have.

A Cardinal for Karen

Here is a photo of a female northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) that I took in the spring.
